Screen finance company Great Point Media has appointed administrators following the death of its founder, Jim Reeve
Great Point Media, which was founded by Reeve and Robert Halmi in 2013, has invested in films including “Asteroid City,” “Lady Macbeth” and “Blue Jean,” among other projects. Its last available accounts, filed in Jan. 2023, reported a turnover of £20 million ($25 million).
Halmi stepped down from the company in 2018, although stayed on as as non-exec chair at Reeve’s request, before going on to found a separate entity called Great Point Studios.
At the time of his death, Reeve was the majority shareholder in Great Point Media. His shareholding transferred to his wife, Laura, an agent for film and TV crew, following his sudden death in February at the age of 64. Reeve’s cause of death has not been disclosed.

Terence Davies, the Liverpool-born director of autobiographical memory pieces like “The Long Day Closes” and “Distant Voices, Still Lives,” has died. He was 77. The English filmmaker passed away peacefully in his home after a short illness on October 7, as confirmed on his official social media pages.
Davies directed several masterpieces in his lifetime, from the sorrowful “The Deep Blue Sea” starring Rachel Weisz as an eternally unhappy seeker of love to his debut feature “Distant Voices,” built on his own closeted working-class British upbringing. You could even say the same about his last film, “Benediction,” starring Jack Lowden as the queer poet Siegfried Sassoon, wrapped around by a coterie of Bright Young Things. He received great acclaim for films like “A Quiet Passion,” starring Cynthia Nixon as the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson, as well as the Edith Wharton adaptation “House of Mirth,” led by Gillian Anderson. Most biopics are thuddingly prosaic: There’s a lot of “this happened, then that happened,” performed by a famous person covering themselves in latex in an attempt to resemble another famous person.
In the hands of British auteur Terence Davies, however, biopics can be poetry, although his choice of subject matter probably helps in that department. On the heels of his gorgeous and contemplative “A Quiet Passion,” about the life of Emily Dickinson, he returns with another passionately quiet portrait, this time exploring Siegfried Sassoon in “Benediction.”
It’s an impressionistic collage, and Davies skillfully jumps from the 1910s to the 1960s and back again. “Benediction” fleetingly encapsulates the horrors of WWI — Sassoon went from being a decorated soldier to an outspoken critic against those who would prolong the conflict — the shadow-world of British gay men in the decades before homosexuality was decriminalized in the UK, and the bitterness of...

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.
While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

Amazon’s Prime Video limited series “Good Omens” marks two historic moments for TV: the long-awaited screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett’s beloved 1990 novel about an angel and a demon trying to avert the apocalypse, and the long-awaited onscreen collaboration of Michael Sheen and David Tennant, who play said angel and demon.
It should be clear to anyone who has watched the fantasy series — which was adapted by Gaiman himself — that Sheen and Tennant are perfectly cast in their respective leading roles. But a bit of excessive politeness almost got in the way of who would take which role on “Good Omens.”

Man Up (2015)
Written by Tess Morris
Directed by Ben Palmer
UK, France, 2015
At 34, Nancy (Londoner-accented Lake Bell) is a flakey journalist on the reluctant look for love at the pestering of friends and family. Through a case of mistaken identity hinging on a self-help book, she winds up on a date turned epic day with Jack (Simon Pegg), an online marketing manager. Charming, right? It’s this on-the-nose “charm” which will divide audiences into lovers and haters (with this viewer falling more towards the latter). In spite of a stellar cast, Man Up falls flat on its promising premise of being a rom-com for nonbelievers.
From the very outset, Nancy is the cool-not-cool girl of quirky nonchalance – watching Silence of the Lambs, writing affirmations in her moleskine, chomping on a baguette, flailing in interactions with members of the opposite sex. Everything she does and says denotes a certain out-of-place yet above-it-all persona,...

To be clear: Bright Young Things is its own Ya series and not a reference to the original title of Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies (and the movie adaptation of the book). So, this series will be about two Midwestern women who move to Manhattan in 1929 and have all sorts of glitzy pre-Depression adventures. It seems like heresy to make an entire Bright Young Things show not set in England? But sure, flappers are fun.

A rose tinted view of the Roaring Twenties, Sonia Grande’s costume design for Midnight in Paris (2011, directed by Woody Allen) offers everything we expect of the era, e.g. achingly fashionable female trends and the increasing Anglophile influence in male suits, yet does not become bogged down in a precise timeframe. Furthermore as the story segues from past to the present, a non specific retro vibe remains palpable, especially in Rachel McAdams’ loose fitting shirt dresses and Owen Wilson’s nubby tweed jackets.
Wilson’s Gil is obviously intended to resemble Woody Allen during his late 1970s heyday, wearing natural waist trousers with brown leather belt, casual shirts and either two or three button tweed jackets, all in earth tones. If there was ever any...

All independent filmmakers dream of seeing their film on the big screen. Seeing it appear on a pirate site first can mean financial death. However, becoming a ‘Filmmaker2.0’ will arm a director or producer against pirates, to turn a torrent into a revenue stream. Colin Delaney reports.
It’s the 21 Century filmmaker’s worst nightmare. Online piracy is costing the global industry billions of dollars. According to a recent report the Australian screen industry is worth $6.1B and supports 48,667 jobs. While this number is up by 5.1% since 2006-07, a study on behalf of the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (Afact) showed that $1.37B in revenue was lost across the entire Australian economy due to movie and TV piracy while 6,100 jobs were forgone in 2010.
Filmmakers these days are well aware of the importance of protecting themselves against piracy before their film’s life has run its course but it only takes...

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (Aftrs) today announced new additions to the 2012 film and TV curriculum including two new masters programs.
Initiated by Neil Peplow, Director of Screen Content, the new courses will focus on building skills to create recognised career paths and springboards to the industry.
Brought over by Aftrs from the UK in May, Peplow – whose credits include co-producing Shooting Fish and Waking Ned executive producing Bright Young Things – had previously completed an audit of UK screen education courses with three of seven meeting the certified criteria.
With Aftrs, Peplow recognised graduates were eager to jump straight into their selected field. However, the new courses would, Peplow said speaking with Encore, build skills through workshops within specialised areas, teaching a realist approach, from the foundation diploma – for students with a passion for film but unsure where they belong – through to the masters courses.

One of Britain's most distinguished actors, known for her roles on stage and screen
Margaret Tyzack, who has died aged 79, was one of Britain's greatest and most popular actors, working on stage, television and film for more than half a century. Sometimes described as being in the mould of Edith Evans and Flora Robson, she will be remembered particularly for performances in the golden age of BBC TV drama – Winifred in The Forsyte Saga (1967), Antonia in I, Claudius (1976) – as well as for stage performances such as Martha in the National Theatre's revival of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1981), for which she won an Olivier award for best actress, and Lottie with Maggie Smith in Lettice and Lovage (1987 and 1990), which earned her both Tony and Variety Club stage actress of the year awards. In 2008, well into her 70s, she scored perhaps one of her finest triumphs on stage as the wily,...

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, the new stop-motion, 3D, animated film produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation. The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.
Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to...

Emily Mortimer's character in Shutter Island is involved in a mega-shocking plot twist, and showing any picture of her from the movie other than this one would apparently give it away (seriously!). Emily Mortimer is one of the most disarmingly frank and unpretentious actresses in the business—qualities she may have inherited from her father, John Mortimer, the beloved British writer and free-speech lawyer, who died in January 2009. After paying her dues on stage and on British TV, she turned in a string of memorable performances in supporting roles in Notting Hill, Bright Young Things, and Match Point, to name just a few. She has recently finished shooting several movies, including the Martin Scorsese thriller Shutter Island, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and hits theaters this Friday. Before we get into your movies, let’s talk about you for a second: Sam, is that your oldest son? Sam is my oldest,...

James McAvoy has been attached to play Ian Fleming, the man who gave us the world's most famous spy. I'm busy working on my 2009 best of list, so I'm not going to go into some big long speech about the choice. Here's more from Pajiba: The movie itself will be based on the book, Ian Fleming: The Man Behind James Bond, by Andrew Lycett, who has also written books on Arthur Conan Doyle, Dylan Thomas, and Rudyard Kipling. The big news here, however, is that the movie — which has been independently financed to the tune of around $40 million — has James McAvoy attached in the lead, which sadly probably takes him out of the running to replace Daniel Craig in the future. McAvoy actually seems well suited to the role — he can do playboy (Bright Young Things), he can do period and war movie (Atonement), and he can do action (Wanted). Plus,...

Palmstar Entertainment and Animus Films are developing a biopic based on the life of Ian Fleming, according to our source, The Hollywood Cog. Currently working under the title, Ian Fleming, the movie will be about the man behind James Bond, specifically focused on the years that gave him inspiration for the Bond character.
Years before creating Bond, Fleming struggled and floundered under the shadow of his family name (his father was a member of Parliament, and his siblings were also well-known, as well, including Peter -- a travel writer). Likable but lost, Fleming was little but an aimless playboy, until his experiences in World War 2 changed his life, and it was those autobiographical experiences during war time that inspired James Bond, who was based -- in part -- on Fleming.

James McAvoy was quite exceptional in The Last King of Scotland and it was his character who actually provided the perspective for the story and the movie itself. Sheen has been extremely busy as of late, following his turn as David Frost in Ron Howard's Oscar-nominated Frost/Nixon with a number of other high profile films. Later this year, he'll be seen as the Italian vampire leader Aro in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and he also voiced the White Rabbit in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland , out in March. Dave from Victim of the Time here once more. It's St. George's Day here- the patron saint of England (and several other countries but who cares about them?)- and although usually all that patriotism makes me slightly ill I thought I'd be more cheerful for once and bring you good mostly-American people some examples of my country's film-making prowess. Although even though it's the English patron saint's day I'll still sticking the banner out to cover the other three countries of our country, because it's all very confusing and we haven't devolved yet. Only a matter of time, though, I hear. /tangent]

Yes, for some, cinema is never more cinematic than when the camera pans with mute eloquence a battle-scarred landscape signifying The Futility of War or some epic finale is relies entirely on montage and shock cuts for its sales effects, but me, I appreciate a good talky stuck-indoors movie, depending on the talk and quality of delivery, of course. What movie could be chattier than Whit Stillman's Metropolitan? When it was released, it seemed like a pleasant novelty, a winsome throwback (his characters were like Waugh-period Bright Young Things without the wild edge), but it's held up sturdily, like a minor ballet that's all steel and bone under the taffeta. And if any movie would seem to invite anachronism, it would be My Dinner with Andre, the talkiest of talky movies with the most stagey of static set-ups (Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory conversing over dinner to the accompaniment...

Thespian Stephen Fry has rubbished rumors about the sexuality of British royal heir Prince Charles. Fry, who is openly gay, is a longtime pal of the 54-year-old Prince and a regular visitor to his Highgrove, England, estate - and insists the Prince is heterosexual. Speaking at the Australian premiere of his new movie Bright Young Things this week, 46-year-old Fry fumes, "Believe me, he is not. I mean, I'm a gay man and I know a gay man when I see one. I'm not saying I'm 100 per cent accurate but I can say he is not. It's pitiful and nonsensical. It makes me very unhappy for him It's cruel. It's horrible.
