May has only just arrived, and it’s already heating up at Hulu! Dozens of new titles have moved in for the new month, with some of streamer’s biggest hits landing on the platform during its first weekend, including Season 3 of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s “Welcome to Wrexham” and Season 5 of “The Kardashians,” but Hulu will be adding major titles all month long, from the premiere of the coming-of-age comedy film “Prom Dates” to the streaming debut of last year’s psychological thriller “Eileen.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. But get to it quick before the Baz Luhrmann film departs on...

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

In a career that spans nearly six decades, it might be surprising that Sam Elliott has only been nominated for one Oscar: Best Supporting Actor for A Star Is Born. But if producer-director-writer-star Bradley Cooper had gotten his way right off the bat, it would have been Howard Stern co-starring in A Star Is Born. Surely there would have been more farts…
Appearing on The Howard Stern Show, the (former?) shock jock remembered being pitched the role of Bobby Maine, the older brother to Bradley Cooper’s Jackson Maine in A Star Is Born. “You came to me and you said, ‘Hey, you will play my brother…And I went, ‘Whoa, he must think I’m a lot better looking than… They’re gonna be like, ‘What the f*ck, what is it, this movie gonna be like Twins?’ I’m Danny DeVito and he’s Arnold Schwarzenegger or something?...

‘War Dogs‘ is that rare based on a true story movie that seems to be desperately trying to be like other based on a true story movies, in this case; it’s apparent goal is to be a combination of a comedic version of ‘Lord of War‘ mixed with the energy and style of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ and ‘The Big Short‘, only without the comedic aspects of,-, well, actually all three of those movies are pretty funny when you think about it. And I especially couldn’t help comparing the film to ‘Lord of War‘ and that’s where the film falters. It’s still interesting and well-made enough to be entertaining and good, but I think they were going for comedy, and honestly, above everything else, I didn’t laugh that much.
Although to be honest, Todd Phillips has honestly, never particularly made me laugh, and...

Consider this a fairly odd news story. In fact, it might be the oddest in some time. Yesterday, word spread throughout the web that a film about DC super villain The Joker was brewing over at Warner Brothers. Yes, the clown prince of crime is getting his own spinoff. Now, that could sound pretty cool on its own, but this is coming off of Jared Leto showing up to mostly indifference in the underwhelming Suicide Squad, all while DC and the WB figure out what to do with their superhero universe. Wait until you hear the details though, as they just might blow your mind. Apparently, the powers that be have Martin Scorsese on board to produce this Joker tale, while Todd Phillips is co-writing a script with Scott Silver and eyeing the director’s chair. Your mind is blown, I’m sure. Scorsese involved with a comic book property?...

"My whole life, even now, I'm attracted to mayhem," Todd Phillips is saying, feet resting on a spotless coffee table inside his spotless office on the Warner Bros. film-studio lot in Burbank, him having turned this lifelong attraction into so much money you can't believe it.

Altogether, they've raked in $1.4 billion, with lunacy galore, chain-smoking monkeys, unexpected face tattoos, roofie-puffed marshmallows and so forth, ad nauseam. Crazy stuff, none of which would...

Gosh! To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Napoleon Dynamite (and promote the film's new "10 Sweet Years" Blu-Ray), Fox Searchlight reunited the cast for a special screening of their absurdist sleeper comedy on Monday, June 9th. Jon Heder, who played the socially awkward title character, was in attendance – along with a hideous bronze statue of the iconic nerd, decked out in moonboots and his classic "Vote For Pedro" T-shirt. Fox Searchlight shared pictures of the terrifying statue on their Facebook, and the results are nearly as memorable as Napoleon's liger drawing.

FX is taking Billy Bob Thornton to the wood chipper.
The actor is set to star in the television adaptation of Joel and Ethan Coen's acclaimed film "Fargo." The 1996 crime drama received seven Oscar nominations, with wins for the Coen brothers' screenplay and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.
The Coen brothers will produce the limited-run FX series, and all 10 episodes have already been written by Noah Hawley.
Thornton will play Lorne Malvo, "the rootless, manipulative man who meets a small-town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction." The TV version will feature a new crime and new characters, though Lorne is loosely modeled on Steve Buscemi's character in the movie.
The show will start filming sometime this fall for a potential spring 2013 premiere.

Director/writer Todd Phillips' filmmaking career has been fairly inconsistent so far, but the peaks and positive results have always been hilariously effective. "Road Trip" was unexpectedly funny and "Old School," a comedy touchstone of sorts, practically invented the fratty, bromantic, arrested development comedy of man-children that’s become its own cottage industry genre (Example: while "Wedding Crashers" was not written by Phillips, that comedy classic owes much of its form to his college-set comedy). Then came the uneven "Starsky & Hutch" and the compromised "School For Scoundrels," which dulled Phillips' dirty politically-incorrect comedy edge. People forget that the R-Rated comedy was struggling until the mid-aughts, when Judd Apatow and his comedy mill rolled into town, but Phillips took it all to another level with "The Hangover" in 2009, at least in terms of success when it became the highest grossing R-Rated comedy ever in the United States (though it’s since.

Napoleon Dynamite was a small film that took pop culture by storm in 2005. The film's stupid yet hilarious humor struck a cord with teenagers. The film led to Jon Heder landing roles in films like Just Like Heaven, Monster House, School for Scoundrels, and Blades of Glory. Heder recently reprised his title role in the animated series adapation of Napoleon Dynamite (created by Jared Hess, the film's director). He was joined by the entire cast of the original film. It ran for a few months on Fox before it was canceled due to low ratings.
The most memorable scene in the film is when Napoleon breaks into a skilled dance routine (to the tune of "Canned Heat") to help his friend Pedro. Still, all these years later, Heder was trained so well that he can actually replicate the dance even today. Attending a public screening of Napoleon Dynamite, Heder was...

Character actor who was Oscar-nominated for his 1999 breakthrough film fails to recover after heart attack

The muscular, 6ft 4in Duncan – a former bodyguard who turned to acting in his 30s – "suffered a myocardial infarction on 13 July and never fully recovered", said a statement issued by a spokesman.

After the post-"Old School" stumbles ("School For Scoundrels" being the most egregious), it was nice to see Todd Phillips land back on his feet in a big way with "The Hangover" and to a lesser degree, the caustic but still enjoyable "Due Date." "The Hangover" of course was more than just a comeback success, the film went supernova and became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time and turned Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper into big stars that now lead their own movies and TV shows. Phillips himself signed a mint-like deal with Warner Bros. and everyone made out pretty damn well from the Vegas misadventure that took everyone by surprise. But the goodwill earned by the film was almost immediately tarnished by the release of "The Hangover Part II," a lazy retread of the original film which seemingly xeroxed the same narrative, beat for beat, in an uninspired fashion,...

Shrewd film producer behind School for Scoundrels and Night of the Demon
Hal E Chester, who has died aged 91, was a juvenile actor, then a producer of low-budget movies in Hollywood, before he moved in 1955 to Britain, where he set up his own production company to take advantage of the lower costs of filming. Over the next 15 years he turned out a wide range of pictures, which often featured American stars such as Mickey Rooney, Dana Andrews, Yul Brynner and Paul Newman. For a period he specialised in British comedies. The first and best of these was School for Scoundrels (1960), loosely based on the popular Gamesmanship books of Stephen Potter. The impressive cast included Alastair Sim, Terry-Thomas and Dennis Price, with Ian Carmichael as the intrepid hero trying to impress Janette Scott.
Small, dynamic and fast-talking, Chester was perhaps a typical example of the shrewd and ambitious Hollywood producer. He...

With great comedies like The Hangover and Old School in his directing past, and his producing effort Project X coming in the near future, Todd Phillips is showing no signs of slowing down as a comedic force in Hollywood. While there's been missteps like School for Scoundrels and the wholly disappointing The Hangover Part II, Deadline reports the filmmaker has a handful of new projects dealing with drug traffickers, arms dealers, an adaptation of a series of web shorts and a mysterious project that sounds like it could easily belong to an action tentpole filmmaker. Thankfully, they all sound like solid new comedies. Most of Phillips new gestating material comes in the form of adaptations, and all are under Warner Bros. renewed deal with his Green Hat Films production banner. One such project is Mule, an adaptation of Tony D'Souza's novel of the same name that follows a young...

Todd Phillips’ Green Hat Films banner has been set up at Warner Bros. ever since “Starsky & Hutch” in 2004. While not every film he’s made since has been a huge hit (“School for Scoundrels” for one, but that was a Dimension/Weinstein Company picture), ever since “The Hangover” arrived, it’s helped Green Hat gross $1.2 billion worldwide. Suffice to say Warner Bros. loves Phillips and the feeling is mutual. According to a just-delivered press release, the company just re-upped their deal with Green Hat that keeps him on the Warners lot until the end of 2013. And while that deal’s just been restruck, Phillips and Green Hat are developing four new films, some of which could end up to be directorial efforts for the director. “Todd’s been a cherished member of the Warner family for a long time, and the comedic genius he’s brought to the big screen...

One of the biggest actor breakouts ever to happen at the Sundance Film Festival was Jon Heder's. In 2004, his feature film debut, "Napoleon Dynamite," screened at Park City and became one of the top comedies of the year, shooting the then-unknown Heder to stardom. He landed representation soon after the fest and booked roles in such films as "Just Like Heaven," "The Benchwarmers," and "School for Scoundrels" before starring in "Blades of Glory" opposite Will Ferrell. Heder is working on the "Napoleon Dynamite" animated TV series for Fox. He majored in 3-D animation at Brigham Young University and loves bringing together his two passions. "For me, my artistic creative passion is creating characters," he says. "It comes natural because animation is acting. It's bringing life to a character. My skills in acting really led to my animation work and vice versa." Naturally GoofyBefore Heder broke out at Sundance, he.

Despite countless negative reviews - such as this one - The Hangover 2 has, as of last Sunday, become the biggest grossing R-rated comedy of all time. Surpassing its predecessor by a cool $20 million, the sequel is yet another addition to what I like to call the 'cash-condors' - a film that manages financial success despite its ugly looks and/or content. Inspired by the 'only-a-mother-could-love' appearance of the Californian Condor, these films share much in common with this unfortunate bird of prey. Both are vultures (either through family or financial ties); both reproduce at a young age (six for the bird itself, and probably between 1-3 years for the greedy, corporate film studios); and both have increased their numbers drastically in the last couple of years (all of our film choices have occurred within the last 9 years).
But just what are the worst offenders? What films...

Cars 2 – IMDb – Rt (34%)
I’ve mentioned it before but it’s worth mentioning again, I don’t like these movies. Cars was just not fun nor did it need a sequel. The folks at Pixar on the other hand love this stuff and will make it anyways, good for them I suppose, but the track record ends today. Cars is running at 34% approval, Pixar’s first ever “rotten” score. Someone’s in trouble.
Bad Teacher – IMDb – Rt (45%)

Hollywoodnews.com: It has been years since comedian Sarah Silverman had a television platform for her intelligent, provocative material. But the wheels have been set in motion that might return Silverman to the small screen.
She’s currently working on a new project with Jon Schroeder and Dan Sterling, collaborators on Comedy Central’s “The Sarah Silverman Program,” that is part of a deal Silverman made with Imagine Television, THR reports. No network is in play at this time.
Silverman’s Comedy Central program last three seasons. In it, she played a fictionalized version of her own personality (much like Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen and Roseanne Barr all have tried in the past).
Over the years, Silverman also has had success in film, starring in “The School of Rock” and “School for Scoundrels.” She’ll next appear with Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams in Sarah Polley’s “Take This Waltz.

Dan Goldberg.s got the golden touch. He produced the highest grossing (in both senses) R-rated comedy The Hangover, and has just released his sixth collaboration with director Todd Phillips the sequel .The Hangover Part II.. His touch is on Old School, Road Trip, School for Scoundrels, and Due Date as well as Howard Stern.s Private Parts, Space Jam, with Michael Jordan, Ivan Reitman.s romantic adventure .Six Days Seven Nights,. starring Harrison Ford, Stripes, Heavy Metal and Meatballs. Not bad for a kid from small town Ontario, Canada. He and Reitman were contemporaries at Hamilton.s McMaster University where he served as the first Vice-President and second President of the McMaster Film Board. Bradley Cooper, Ken Jeong, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis in The Hangover Part II
Photo: Warner Bros. When I saw The Hangover back in 2009 it had me rolling. When it came time to watch it again on Blu-ray I immediately began to feel the film's length. The novelty had already started to wear off and while it still had its share of laughs it simply wasn't anywhere near as funny as it was the first time around. That said, you can probably predict my opinion on The Hangover Part II when I tell you it is pretty much a carbon copy of the first film only set in a different city.
Last time it was Doug (Justin Bartha) that was getting married as he and his friends Phil (Bradley Cooper) and Stu (Ed Helms) and his now brother-in-law Alan (Zach Galifianakis) took to Las Vegas for a bachelor party that went all kinds of wrong.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Hangover Part II – Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms
Kung Fu Panda 2 – Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan
Movie of the Week
The Hangover Part II
The Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms
The Plot: Right after their infamous Las Vegas bachelor party, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. Stu’s plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.
The Buzz: Like many wines and cheeses before him, Hangover II writer/director Todd Phillips has aged well. With Road Trip, his directorial debut, he made a film just funny enough to facilitate the production of his 2nd film, the far superior, Old School. From there Phillips helmed Starsky and Hutch, which was respected well enough, for what it was, before taking a major misstep with School for Scoundrels. Phillips bounced back big-time from his first flop,...

With plum roles for women and an equal commitment to gross-out, Kristen Wiig's movie will be a great Hangover cure
If you're in the market for a fantastically dark gross-out black comedy about clueless young Americans trapped in a never-ending nightmare in south-east Asia, skip The Hangover Part II and just watch Apocalypse Now, reissued this week for the umpteenth time. I'm out of town this week so I've yet to see Hangover II, though I imagine there's a worldwide embargo on pre-release glimpses of its priceless shit jokes and fart oratorios, lest one dime of its projected mega profits be lost to piracy or to unfounded rumours of comedic inadequacy.
The latter, as it happens, has long been my biggest problem with the Todd Phillips oeuvre. My main memories of his last three R-rated comedies – Old School, The Hangover, and Due Date – are of wall-to-wall ads in the month preceding release,...

For women, breaking into comedy is a tough enough nut to crack without the chauvinistic "women aren't funny" comments. Not only is it not true, but with a male-dominated writer's field in Hollywood (73 percent of the WGA's film writers are men) it's only too clear that if women aren't funny onscreen it's probably because the only funny thing they had to do in the script was fall down and go boom boom.
The widely accepted paradigm in movies (not to mention TV) is having an out-of-shape or mildly attractive but funny husband and his hot, not-as-funny wife. And it's getting stale, baby. In order for a woman to go against that grain takes massive ovaries, the ability to generate her own material, and absolutely no fear of looking stupid.
Here are our picks for the 20 funniest women working in movies today.
20. Eva Mendes
