Dexter or Jim hides his identity for ten years and, suddenly, Angel Batista happens to show up at the same seminar as Jim's girlfriend at the same instant that Harrison reveals his secret to Angela's daughter. Dexter doesn't vet his victim, he doesn't carefully plan his kill, he makes his initial move right outside a bar in the middle of the day and he allows himself to be seen with his prospective victim, having a drink in the bar and on any cameras that might be in the vicinity. Intelligent, sensible Harrison takes drugs for the first time and is the only kid at the party to overdose. The nice, peaceful small town policeman is suddenly a vigilante.
Even if Angela, as chief of police, is stupid, ignorant and incompetent enough to need Angel to tell her that the young girls who had been going missing in her town for over ten years indicated a pattern, Dexter would have figured it out, the first time he heard about the cases. Dexter was always six steps ahead of Deb and nineteen steps ahead of Angel and the rest of Miami Metro.
Why did it take Angel a minute to remember Harrison's name? For the first five years of Harrison's life, Dexter and Deb were Angel's best friends. Angel's sister was also Harrison's nanny and she doubtlessly talked about him often, before and after he disappeared. And what did Miami Metro and everyone else in the lives of the Morgans, at the time, think happened to Harrison. A dying Debra's body disappeared from the hospital, Dexter drove his boat into a storm and was presumed dead but how was Harrison's sudden disappearance explained?
Everyone is google-able and everyone has documented records, in 2021. Dexter's picture was in the newspapers when his wife was murdered by the Trinity Killer, among other times. Shouldn't Molly, the podcast woman who studied killers, including Trinity, have seen Dexter's picture, at some point? And what about Angela's daughter, who unknowingly sent Harrison a picture of his mother and her killer? Why didn't she find Dexter's picture, too?
And what about Debra Morgan, who went from being one of the most compelling, appealing characters on a TV drama to being a whiny, annoying nag? Harry's ghost was Dexter's conscience, sounding board and voice of reason. Debra is just there to yell at Dexter and berate him.
The original Dexter was meticulously written and the stories and characters made perfect sense. I'm sorry to dispute the positive reviews but this show is all over the place. I'm still hanging in, hoping for something close to the show I loved.
