AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. According to the Academy’s ruling at the time, “the reappearance in a subsequent ‘season’ of one character...

Was Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 6 the end of the story, or just the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the venerable detective?
With the superb cast, masterful writing, and one of the few times that viewers and critics connect, it's hard not to imagine everyone involved hoping this was only the first chapter of a new book about Sam Spade and his exploits in Bozouls.
Of course, it would be odd to have so much happen in the quaint town, but even during the finale, it was noted that it's not so quaint after all.
If you're not a fan of tales being tied up with exposition, you may have been disappointed in Monsieur Spade's final hour.
But if you've been enjoying the banter filling the canyons of Bozouls, then it hit the mark.
This was a highly stylized finale.

As you've undoubtedly heard by now, the Kansas City Chiefs won their second consecutive Super Bowl on Sunday night.

Super Bowl ratings have been on the rise in recent years, and the combination of a hard-fought overtime game and the world's most famous entertainer no doubt delivered a massive audience for CBS.
For Swift and Kelce, it was the culmination of a fairy tale romance, and for the good people of Kansas City, it was the perfect ending to a storybook season.
But if you're a fan of neither football nor somewhat bland pop melodies, you might be growing a little tired of the Traylor saga.

There was a stunning revelation on Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 5 that we should have seen coming a mile away.
We also got our first true glimpse into the monster that is Philippe Saint Andre as we said goodbye to a character we’ve come to know well.
Let’s dig into a jam-packed episode and everything that came to light.
When I have been snooping on social media about reactions to Monsieur Spade Season 1, many people call it slow, which escapes me, and many others say it’s difficult to follow.
This is the episode where things start to make sense, even if to an average person like me, making sense of it doesn’t make it any more palpable.

In the fourth episode of Monsieur Spade, Philippe met Jean-Pierre at the end and managed to take the kid named Zyad from Samir. Oas, a far-right organization, was also after the boy, and it was still unclear in episode 4 why everyone wanted him. Teresa and Henri got closer, but it was revealed that Henri had been spying on Spade for quite a while. The neighboring painter George and his mother Cynthia turned out to be spies working for an intelligence agency, and Spade began to suspect them. However, there are still many questions that remain unanswered, and the biggest question is what Philippe was up to. Let’s see what happened in Monsieur Spade Episode 5.
Episode 5 opened in Algeria in 1956, where Philippe captured a wounded soldier and interrogated him about the man in the picture. This man in the picture seemed to be Jean-Pierre, whom Philippe was probably looking for.

We are still not much closer to the full picture of the boy and how his mere presence has created such an uproar in Bozouls, but Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 4 began fleshing it out in some detail.
There are many layers to this entertaining mystery, and as one is peeled away, another is revealed.
The past and present are intricately reliant, and the more we know about one, the more we'll know about the other.
The previews for Monsieur Spade had already hinted at Sam's turn at being a badass, but watching him in action, questioning his attacker with amazing physical prowess without ever leaving his chair, was a treat.
That scene spoke directly to Spade's capabilities and what makes him such a formidable enemy and detective. Even after almost losing his life in a chokehold, he's ridiculously calm and in control.
Filming scenes like that must be a hoot.

Higher education is a pain for millions, and it’s particularly challenging when a person wants to pursue a career they're passionate about, but it’s preferential that they get into something worth all the money they pour into their studies.
Kirsten wants to be a fashion designer, and her working-class parents aren’t thrilled about it, so she gets a little creative about how she makes her money, and by “creative,” we mean she becomes a Cam Girl! Sex sells pretty damn well, right?
Of course,...

As Teresa’s family, especially her grandmother, refused to take the child and denied her all responsibility, Spade decided to take care of her. Spade spent his married life with a woman named Gabrielle, but unfortunately, she passed away. Teresa was subsequently put in a convent, under the supervision of the Mother Superior. Philippe, Teresa’s biological father, had been out of the village for a long while, but when he came back, a murderous incident took place in the village. Philippe had always been a problematic guy, and he had some personal grudges with Spade. Shortly after his arrival, Spade was informed of a terrible murder incident. Someone had broken into the convent and ruthlessly murdered six innocent nuns. It was at...

How does falling in love change a person?
If you’re venerable detective Samuel Spade, it changes the course of your life.
Monsieur Spade Season 1 Episode 1 introduces us to a brusque man quicker with wit than giving his heart, but the real story begins eight years after he finds and loses the great love of his life.
While this is the Sam Spade Humphrey Bogart played to perfection in The Maltese Falcon, he's obviously older and certainly more jaded, which is a hell of a feat.
We meet the older Spade in the mid-fifties on an assignment to reunite a young girl with her father. Spade plays the tough all the way, but when he finds Teresa snuggled up against him on a stormy night alone in a car, the truth is revealed. Spade’s heart doesn’t match his exterior.
Timing is everything, and on the back of that tender moment,...

What happens when you take a San Francisco detective and retire him to the South of France? When the rights to the Dashiell Hammett character made famous by Humphrey Bogart in “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) became available, writer-director Scott Frank, perhaps emboldened by his Emmy-winning successes with his western series “Godless” and chess sensation “The Queen’s Gambit,” convinced his friend Tom Fontana (“Oz”) to co-create a limited series, “Monsieur Spade” about an older Sam Spade in France.
These two writers had a blast making Spade (Clive Owen) middle-aged and grumpy — his doctor wants him to give up smoking. He’s grieving his lost wife, a Frenchwoman (Chiara Mastroianni) who left him a lovely estate. He reluctantly acts as a father figure for a teenage girl (Cara Bossom) whose mother Brigid O’Shaughnessy sent him eight years ago to Bozouls to deliver her child to her father (Jonathan Zaccaï). The plot is complicated,...

All works of IP exploitation are, on some level, legitimized fanfiction. Once divorced from the original author, the line that separates a franchise’s sequel, prequel or reboot from the average post on Wattpad is a great deal of money and the blessing of an estate and/or corporation. But even with this baseline, the AMC limited series “Monsieur Spade” is an especially unabashed act of wish fulfillment through and for a beloved protagonist. The namesake of “Monsieur Spade” is none other than Sam Spade (Clive Owen), the private investigator who headlined the Dashiell Hammett novel turned John Huston film noir “The Maltese Falcon,” plus a handful of Hammett short stories published in the 1930s. For their spin on Spade, series creators Tom Fontana (“Oz”) and Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”) send the sleuth to the south of France, where he spends a few weeks of his not-so-peaceful retirement looking...

If you’re on any form of social media, you probably know that on January 1, an early incarnation of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain. This prompted the usual memes putting the beloved character in decidedly adult situations and, in just a few months, we’ll be treated to a Mickey Mouse slasher film.
For a different, more pastoral, approach to elevated fan fic — this one conducted with the approval of the Dashiell Hammett Estate, rather than public domain — look to six-episode limited series Monsieur Spade, which will roll out on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn TV.

TV Fanatic recently had the chance to catch up with talented actor Clive Owen to discuss his upcoming role as venerable detective Sam Spade in the AMC series Monsieur Spade.
The series follows the detective well after he metaphorically hangs up his detective hat and settles down in France. Is Spade really the type of man who would let a good mystery go unanswered? There wouldn't be a series if he were.

To some, it may seem blasphemous to go anywhere near new content that centers Sam Spade. Who would dare pick up the pen of Dashiell Hammett or step into the shoes of Humphrey Bogart? Luckily, the pedigree behind AMC’s excellent “Monsieur Spade” is one of the highest in years. Co-created by Scott Frank and Tom Fontana, and executive produced by Barry Levinson, this brightly-lit noir is one of the best recent TV originals, a smart, sexy, deeply philosophical piece of storytelling that values things like dialogue, character, and theme over the high concepts that have defined so much TV in the 2020s.

It’s the time of the season. Every year, filmmaker Steven Soderbergh drops his annual “Seen, Read” list, a yearly compendium tracking everything the director watched or read in the year, be it a film, a TV show, a novel, a non-fiction book, etc. Some years, there are clues to his year. For example, last year, his list unveiled a new project, which at the time was called “The Pendulum Project,” and we all discovered it was eventually his new series, “Command Z,” written and co-conceived by author/writer Kurt Anderson.

The career of Scott Frank got a lengthy deep dive courtesy of a profile in The New Yorker that revealed the writer-director has a $300,000 weekly fee as a Hollywood script doctor. Frank acknowledges this fee is “insane,” but being a script doctor is how he’s made a life for himself despite being a credited screenwriter on films by Steven Soderbergh (“Out of Sight”), Barry Sonnenfield (“Get Shorty”), James Mangold and more. He’s also the Emmy-winning writer and director of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit.” Plus, $300,000 a week feels earned after putting the finishing touches on nearly 60 films, including “Saving Private Ryan,” “Night at the Museum,” “Unfaithful,” “The Ring,” “Gravity” and “a lot of the X-Men movies.”
A “script doctor” is the term given to a screenwriter hired to punch up or reshape a pre-existing script, be it smoothing out a messy third act or overhauling the dialogue to make a character more memorable.

Fortunately, the strikes have been settled, production has begun on nearly every new and returning series, and the midseason January lineup hints that things are slowly returning to normal.
Here’s a look at the shows scheduled to launch their new season – or series – premieres in January 2024. NBC’s Chicago shows – Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. – will kick off new seasons on January 17th, with the Law & Order franchises returning on January 18th. New highly anticipated series debuting in January include Echo, Expats, Masters of the Air, The Brothers Sun, and Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale.

AMC has canceled “Lucky Hank” after one season, Variety has confirmed.
Based on Richard Russo’s “Straight Man” novel, the eight-episode dramedy follows William Henry “Hank” Devereaux Jr. (Bob Odenkirk), an unlikely chairman in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt. Just as Hank’s career and home life begins to unravel, his wife Lily (Mirielle Enos) also decides to take a look at some of her past choices that led to her current reality. The series is told in first person from Hank’s point of view.
“We’re proud of ‘Lucky Hank’ and thankful for the work of everyone who brought this unique, playful and deeply human show to viewers, from the talented creative team to our partners at Sony and, of course, Bob, Mireille and the entire cast and crew,” said AMC in a statement. “Unfortunately, we are not able to proceed with a second season,...

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
Netflix is delving back into the world of Black Mirror.
Months after the debut of its sixth season, reports have emerged that Netflix is already prepping Black Mirror Season 7.
With the speedier-than-usual renewal, there's a high chance we won't wait as long for fresh episodes.
The four-year wait between Seasons 5 and 6 was a lot.
Then again, maybe there will still be a significant delay because the series tends to attract big names due to the one-episode commitment afforded by its format.
Black Mirror has remained a success story for Netflix, reaching the Top 10 in countless countries.
The series started on Channel 4 but moved to Netflix in 2016 and has enjoyed a bigger budget and more cutting-edge stories than before.
We're unsure where the series will go next, but we'll be seated when new episodes pop into our Netflix queue.
