Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum stirred up controversy Wednesday when he claimed his studio hasn’t produced a theatrical release by a woman because there weren’t “a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror.” Many people took to Twitter to criticize Blum’s unqualified statement, with one user saying it took just one “quick Google search” to find the plethora of women at the helm of horror films. (Blum did say that he had tried to hire “The Babadook” director Jennifer Kent but she turned him down.)
Later that day, at the premiere for “Halloween,” which he produced, Blum apologized and said “Today was a great day for me because I learned a lot and because there are a lot of women out there that I’m going to meet as a result of today so I’m grateful for it.”

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez stars in Miss Bala, the Catherine Hardwicke-directed English-language redo of Gerardo Naranjo’s hard-charging 2011 Spanish-language thriller. Columbia Pictures has set a February 1 release date for the film and took the wraps off the first trailer today.
Rodriguez, in the role Stephanie Sigman portrayed in the original, stars as an American recently arrived in Tijuana who is kidnapped by a cartel and drawn into the dangerous world of cross-border crime. She must use all of her cunning, inventiveness and strength she never knew she had to survive the ordeal. It’s a different kind of strength, to be sure, from what she exhibits on the CW’s flagship dramedy, but judging from this first look she is up to the task as she tightrope-walks between the gang and the feds, all with the singular goal of protecting her family.

The curtain has come down on another CinemaCon.
Every year, studios make the trek to Las Vegas, hoping to prove to exhibitors that they have the goods to turbocharge the box office. Their Caesars Palace presentations are increasingly elaborate (Cher even performed), and hauling talent and executives to the desert can cost north of $3 million, so the stakes are high.
Some get their money’s worth. Others should just have spent the money at the crap’s table. Here’s a look at the winners and losers of CinemaCon 2018.
Tiffany Haddish (Winner)
The comedienne proved “Girls Trip” was no fluke. Haddish had the crowd at Caesars in stitches while presenting a trailer from the very funny-looking “Night School,” talking up upcoming turns in “The Secret Life of Pets 2” and Tyler Perry’s “The List,” and joking about her past career in porn.

Sony would like you to know it’s committed to originality. That was the message reiterated by its executives at the studio’s CinemaCon presentation Monday night — and no one was more passionate than chairman Tom Rothman, who spoke of the studio’s “increasing dedication” and “commitment” to the concept.
However, Rothman presided over a show-and-tell that included Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly doing their “Step Brothers” schtick in “Holmes and Watson” as Sherlock Holmes and Mr. Watson (tagline: “The World’s Greatest Dicks”); “Hotel Transylvania 3,” Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween,” “Equalizer 2,” “Sicario 2,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Marvel’s “Venom,” remakes of “Superfly” and “Miss Bala,” “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” and teasing mentions of 2019 titles “Men in Black 3,” the still-untitled “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel, and “Jumanji 2.”

Latina action stars, mixed race superheros, and blaxploitation icons took center stage at Sony Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation on Monday. At a time when the movie business is being heavily criticized for offering up a glut of films about white men, the studio’s upcoming slate is notable for highlighting an array of ethnically diverse leading men and women.
“Miss Bala,” a thriller about a Mexican woman (Gina Rodriguez), who becomes entangled with a drug cartel; “Superfly,” a remake of the 1972 crime classic about an African-American cocaine dealer; and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which reimagines the wall-crawler as a black teen named Miles Morales, are among Sony’s most-promising upcoming releases.
Catherine Hardwicke, the director of “Miss Bala,” argued that a major studio film about a kick-ass Latina heroine was long overdue.

You never know where you’ll find an opportunity to land an audition! “Carmen Sandiego” TV favorite Gina Rodriguez is adding more features to her resume with her recent starring role in “Annihilation” and the upcoming remake of “Miss Bala.” It was already announced that she would voice the character of Carmen Sandiego in a new Netflix animated series, set to drop in 2019, but now, the streaming platform is expanding their brand with a standalone Carmen Sandiego live-action film that Rodriguez will star in as well. No writer or director is attached yet, but there is a chance that the two projects will share more than just a star as they both continue to add talent. “Born a Crime” Hollywood darling Lupita Nyong’o thrilled theater fans...

Carmen Sandiego is famously hard to locate, but it turns out she’s been hiding out on the CW this whole time. Our sister site Deadline has exclusively reported that “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez has been cast as the title character in a live-action “Carmen Sandiego” feature film from Netflix. Rodriguez will also produce the film through her company I Can and I Will Productions.
The character of Carmen Sandiego was first created in the educational video game series “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?” starting in 1985. Carmen is a globetrotting thief and the leader of the criminal organization Vile whose exploits across the globe help players of the game learn international geography. The video games spawned a children’s TV game show that was hosted by Lynne Thigpen and ran from 1991-1995. It won six Daytime Emmys during its run and earned five straight nominations for...

Three directors who have had a film surpass $340 million at the worldwide box office revisited how Sundance launched their careers. On January 26, “Power of Story: Indies Go Hollywood,” brought together Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarock”), Justin Lin (“Star Trek: Beyond”), and Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”) to discuss the challenges of adjusting to the studio system, their desire for the industry to be more inclusive, and how to keep their stories personal when they’re part of a juggernaut franchise.

Demons can take many shapes and form. The creepy doll is no exception.
Annabelle: Creation heads into theaters nationwide today. It serves as the origin story on how the Annabelle is first created for The Conjuring universe.
The film stars Stephanie Sigman (Miss Bala), Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings), Lulu Wilson (Ouija: Origin of Evil), Anthony Lapaglia (Without A Trace), Talitha Bateman (The 5th Wave) and Alicia Vela-Bailey (Lights Out). It’s directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out).
We managed to catch actress Stephanie Sigman over the phone for the busy promotion for Annabelle: Creation. She told us about the lure of playing a nun character, which is quite different from playing a Bond girl on Spectre or a pageant model turned drug dealer in Miss Bala. She also discussed her personal beliefs in the supernatural and admitted that it was her who asked for the set to be blessed from evil.

MaryAnn’s quick take… All familiar funhouse spooks telegraphed a mile out, with no spiritual or psychological weight, but with some very young girls terrorized for your entertainment. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of studio horror films
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Forget possessed dolls and demons that Want Your Soul. The most unbelievable thing about Annabelle: Creation is that it hopes we will accept that its titular doll, that ghoul-faced monstrosity with the sunken eyes and sallow skin, was actually something lovingly created by a kindly dollmaker in the image of his beloved and beautiful little daughter, and — even more implausible still — that his customers positively clamored to take these dolls home and bestow them upon impressionable children.
I am not buying that at all.

Meet the new voice of Carmen Sandiego.
The Golden Globe-winning actress Gina Rodriguez will be the new voice of Carmen Sandiego in an animated series that is currently in the works at Netflix, according to The Tracking Board. The series will be based on the 80s educational video game that inspired PBS’ early-to-mid 90s children’s game show, both called Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Netflix still has yet to confirm the series, but The Tracking Board has said the streaming service “has ordered 20 episodes of the series, which aims to be as educational as it is entertaining, given the title character’s globetrotting adventures.”
So far what has been said about the adaptation seems to follow in the “educational” footsteps of its 90s predecessor, so we can expect to see a modernised version of the three gumshoes tracking Carmen Sandiego’s whereabouts. However, while the location of Sandiego’s whereabouts remains unknown, one...

Six years have passed since “Miss Bala” landed at the Cannes Film Festival, and made quite the impression (we loved it).
