A suggestion
lor_21 June 2023
Watching this uninvolving episode, I found my mind wandering. A story that begins with an Afhanistan flashback shouldhave some subplot or even main plot that can tug at one's heartstrings by fadeout, given the still unresolved issues of America's hasty pullout from the country, abandoning many people and leaving everyone to the far-from-tender mercies of the Taliban.

So I suggest a diversion, an idea out of left field. "NCIS" losing some of its favorite stars over the years is clearly a problem -it's difficult for any show to survive the loss of a fan favorite or in this case seemingly ALL the favorites.

So what came to mind was a mainly forgotten show from my younger days, Gene Barry in "Burke's Law", a show created by a great playwright, Frank D. Gilroy. Like "NCIS" it was a procedural show about crime, but with an unusual gimmick: every week there was a cavalcade of guest stars - a who's who of Hollywood. Talk about distraction -if the crime story was weak, who cares? You could see any and all current celebs parade by in fun fashion, from Zsa Zsa Gabor, Barbara Eden and Arlene Dahl to Edgar Bergem, Don Rickles and Don Ameche.

No offense to hard working character actors, but this episode typically had NO guest stars. The dialogue and story was simply too functional - a sure way to achieve dullness.

Even Chuck Lorre would think this was too clichéd!

Why did the makers of NCIS let sitcom writers take over script duties for this episode? I assume that's whats happened here, as the ""jokes" and "comical" situation wouldn't seem out of place on The Big Bang Theory. The subplot regarding Jimmy being an overprotective parent was only missing a laugh track to compound the misery, and what makes it worse is that while the main story was full of good intentions, it was laughably told. Subtle story telling was no where to be seen, and while I applaud the overall message of this episode , it's execution was amateurish at best.

Alas, the term "Hate Watching" applies here for me. Apart from the odd episode, this show is so far from its heyday, its hard to reconcile this present day incarnation of NCIS compared to the glory days. Maybe I should give up on the show? The show certainly seems to have given up on its viewers.

Warning: Spoilers
Not sure how you can title an episode "Stranger in a Strange Land" and then give us a heaping lump of coal like we got here tonight.

I won't even say this was by the book and formulaic NCIS because it was not even that. There was no story, there was no comedy, the characters did not even seem to care about what was going on.

There have been a lot of good stories and episodes about the chaos in Afghanistan from 2011 and this did not do a good job at all of telling the viewer about the danger or even entertaining them. A lot of this episode was an absolute disappointment tonight and not noteworthy at all.

The downward spiral continues!

The main storyline bored me by about minute five. However, what really concerned me was that Dr. Palmer's daughter, Victoria miraculously went from around age 8 in Season 19 to around age 13 in this season. Hello! I realize that writers are allowed a certain amount of leeway in aging characters, but this was a HUGE leap! What's going to happen in Season 21: Victoria graduates from high school? McGee's kids enter Fifth Grade? Seriously! This once great series is limping along like a brontosaurus on two legs! Maybe former lead, now only Producer, Mark Harmon needs to put on his bifocals in search of better scripts!

A mediocre episode!

Warning: Spoilers
Chad Gomez Creasey, the writer of this episode, has written three "NCIS" stories so far. I did not enjoy his "Leave No Trace", thought the narrative felt like filler. "Stranger in a Strange Land" isn't very good either. It's not as bad as "Leave No Trace", but doesn't stick the landing.

Let's start with the good.

. The production values of this episode are great. "Stranger in a Strange Land" is well-directed, the music fits the scenery and the acting's decent.

. Do agree that the subject matter of this episode is important and there are couple of fine jokes here. The story isn't boring, which is always a plus. Also liked how Torres' storyline was handled.

But....

. The subplot about Jimmy being protective about his daughter was streched out for way too long and got rather stupid. There are elements of the story that have handled in previous episodes. Do agree too that subtlety would have been a better way to handle the subject matter. Too much of the episode feels to be caught in its political message.

Overall, mediocre

4/10 HK.
