Joker = Depiction of Reality
chettiyarsenthilkumar19 August 2016
After I saw the marathi movie "Court", I kept wondering whether a tamil movie can bring out the same magic, i.e. the "court" showed the reality of our judiciary system and this movie showed the reality in politics, common man's mind set and his carelessness towards all the injustice around us. This movie might bore some people, especially the restless impatient youth of today. But you can't help it guys, this movie depicts whats real and slaps you on your face for your inability and unconcerned nature towards everything we see around us !

Keep it up Tamil cinema !

A bold and hard hitting political satire !!!
Yuvi7712 August 2016
Plot

Mannar Mannan (Guru Somasundaram) is a middle-aged man who questions the loopholes of democracy and government rule. But the police officials and general people consider him as 'paithiyam'. What made Mannar feel responsible as a citizen? What made him question the government and protest against them? The film answers it beautifully, filled with emotions.

Direction and Screenplay

Director Raju Murugan has a great vision and one has to appreciate him for coming up with such a film. The dialogues are also bold and straight-forward, which conveys the intended notions at the right proportion. The love portions between Somasundaram and Ramya Pandian is cute and the emotions throughout the movie work big time. Though the film might be less on engagement factor, there are no yawn moments as there is something regularly on offer. Writing is very smart and it is great to see a bold film about politics after a very long time. The emotional second half explains what happens when poor people don't get the basic amenities due to the government's less functioning.

Cast

Guru Somasundaram, the man who impressed us with his character performances in films like Aaranya Kaandam, Jigarthanda, has played the lead role for the first time, and he has done full justice to his role. He is a thorough performer, and there can be no second thoughts about his acting. Coming from the theatre background, his performance is unmatchable. Both, Ramya Pandian and Gayathri as typical rural ladies fit into the role easily. Ramasamy and Bava Chelladurai gives their ample support to the film. Especially, Ramasamy's performance in the climax scene needs special mention. Though the cast doesn't have any big names, the acting has been immense from the entire cast.

Technical

Sean Roldan's music is a very big plus for the movie. His background score is emotionally moving, thereby standing as a great pillar. He has been very selective with his movies, and Joker is a wonderful addition to his career. The songs are also well in sync with the movie and gives you the right feel. Chezhian's visuals are neat and shows the beauty of Dharmapuri in the most convincing manner. The movie is crisp with a running time of 2 hours and 10 minutes. Art direction has been noteworthy, for the fact that the locations and properties used in the film can be easily associated with the film's core plot.

Producer S.R.Prabhu needs a special mention for showing the courage to invest on a refreshingly bold script like Joker.

Verdict: A bold and hard hitting political satire that might not have compromised entertainment but stands high on cast, music and writing

A Must watch movie!
rajmannar-0823019 October 2016
This is a tour-de-force of movie experience. Simply put, one of the best movies where everything comes together - Story, acting, direction, music, scripting, camera work. Just phenomenal. And the most important thing is - this has a soul which hits a raw nerve by its grim realism. The nativity of the location, milieu, the support cast is amazing. Shows the eye of detail of the movie makers. It also avoids the pitfall of being preachy or melodramatic or over the top. A pity that movies like this don't get a larger audience outside the region. There is so much of garbage movies which is produced nationally which gets reams and reams of media coverage but which everyone forgets immediately after the show itself.

I hate to give anything out about the story. It is better to watch this with no idea of the plot to heighten the cinematic experience. Even the very idea of having something like "this" (suspense) as fulcrum of the movie may seem a joke, but it is fitting.

And in all that grimness, there is also a very nicely played out love story where lot is said and exchanged by shy glances and slight chivalry.

Special kudos to the actor who played the lead role of Joker - Guru Somasundaram. He lives the role. All the useless Khans and big mouthed "heroes" should take note on what acting means. Nothing less, nothing more. The supporting star cast are no less behind.

Music including the background score is flawless! That is saying a lot.

Camera work is spectacular. Right from the first shot where it lovingly shows the rural place, not leaving even the minutest detail and continuing the same form till the end. Brilliant.

Dialogues are terrific. Again, not over the top, but very appropriate. Especially the climax.

Great work by Director! Do not miss it.

As uncomfortable as Reqieum for a Dream; As brilliant as City of God
avkumar-5466125 April 2017
I recently watched this on Amazon Prime. I wasn't expecting much from this movie but the synopsis given on the site intrigued me: "Mannar (protagonist), a villager, who declares himself as Indian President, protests government for absurdities. On a trial, he reveals his past. When everyone sees him as Joker, audience are questioned at the end".

Now, i'll admit i love myself a satirical movie, one that questions the convention and the authority. But this movie does so much more..

In a little over 2 hours, this movie captures the depravity that a man may be subjugated to, through no fault of his own and how mercilessly helpless we all are against the power of a system.

The sheer brilliance in the acting in this movie, coupled by such a powerful script and such brilliant screenplay; have managed to capture an essence which perhaps was last captured by Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron almost a quarter of a century ago.

I am in awe of this movie; the acting, the simplicity of its characters and the complexity of their emotions. The subliminal messaging and the sharp tongued wit! I would recommend anyone and everyone to watch this movie. The fact that this movie won a national award does not surprise me at all.

Reflecting Truth: If you want to know the reality and humanity around you .. Watch this

Hello Guys, If you want to know the reality and humanity which is around us in India / your street / next street. Watch this movie.

Magnificent story telling about today state of poverty. where the justice goes for poor people vs mighty.

We are all in selfish life, where we look for our slice of bread (including me), but is this right?.

Only mighty can get it everything. All other people are coming to earth to just die with economic inabilities. I am sure , I am in very self interested society, where always repeating our self as donator for the big NGO's via our company/ some checks.

I think, giving money will not solve the poverty issue in India. We have to give ourself to help our people. Via giving Education/literature, Clean society and dedicated timing.

But what government doing it. You are taking my 30% of the money as incometax, but not doing anything for the society.

I don't need clean road/ biggest infrastructure, WiFi... for the IT guys who is earning lakhs and lakhs of rupees.

Do something to the poor people with my incometax (30%) to the people who doesn't have schools/roads. But school with proper teachers.

They have to come-up and live a normal life. Otherwise India will grow like elephant leg disease. Only one side will live luxury life and other side will die as they born.

Hats off Raju Murugan.

But don't betray me by taking any other bullshit movie due to some commercial Benifits. We need you to take some thing like this movie. I hope definitely you will get some money.

It is also with our people. Never give anything who is doing good for the society. It will go behind, Mass and branding.

For me, you are brand ambassador, because you reflected the truth.

You slapped me at climax. Yes I am Joker.

I am saluting you and the character fight for justice (old man and the group). They given the life to your characters. All are gems in acting.

Jai Hind.

Thanks Nithyanantha Babu Sundaram

One of a kind movie
soorajprasad8725 November 2016
A well thought and well directed movie. Not many can think of a making a movie where you want to pass on a social message, keep it a emotionally 'hilarious' and keep the audience engaged. The director has done a really good job. Sean Ronalad's music is what Rahman's music is to Mani Rathnam's movies. If you are the one looking for entertainment, don't watch the movie. If you are a someone who appreciates art, class and hard-work, this will be a treat for you. "Chellama" will live forever, 'if you know what I mean'! There are very few directors who shoot what is in their heart and I can confidently say Raju Murugan is one among them.

Even though there is some slow scenes after interval block but the overall movie is really really awesome. its slaps not only the politicians, its for a every person. This is a good start for a movie which resemblance the life of the common man. Hats off!!

One of kind Movie from Indian Cinema

Warning: Spoilers
A Tamil movie like none. A deep Intense movie about how an ordinary man is trying fight injustice in his every day life. The movie is set up in rural Tamil Nadu, in one of the poorest districts. The movie depicts about real life traits that occurs in a man's life.

The movie shows hard core truth about how corrupt our system is and how still there are people who fight with this system everyday. They do not have any motive in their life other than just fighting for the people who have no voice or who are afraid to raise a movie.

The movie with in a span of 2 hours shows some of the most intriguing crime, corruption and stigma that has engulfed our corrupted society. It showcases who the sand mafia has taken over the river beds and are destroying everything. It shows how a Government scheme never materialize because of the corruption from Top to bottom. It shows how schools does not adhere to any standard in building a school or taking safety into consideration while building a school.

The screenplay is amazing and hats off to the actors who had done justice to the subject and the story taken. A must watch for art movie lovers.

Worst movie I have ever seen.
Prsv19271120 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Mannar manana got arrested and put in jail. Then begins the flashback. In the flashback he dies. That is some screenplay the director did there. What kind of social awareness are you trying to create? You condemn the legislature, executive and judiciary while suggesting to impose military rule as a solution. According to this movie, all are wrong except the one that come to watch the movie in the theater. All you want to do is to massage the ego of these "comman men" who does not have any political knowledge except abusing political leaders.

Just because you have mentioned a sensitive and important issue like open defecation here and there does not make your movie a good one. Before breaking the rules of screenplay writing(like you said in one of your self boasting interviews) learn the rules first. A movie, good or bad, SHOULD HAVE A SCREENPLAY. This movie was like a dialogue reciting competition.

If you are going to criticize the system, first learn what the system is and how it functions and what are the loopholes in it. Or simply watch Vetrimaran's Visaranai. You might learn one or two things.Your movie is full of anti social elements and the people who praise it doesn't even recognize it. Just by instigating the guilt of these people you are securing your movie's box office. Good strategy Rajumurugan. Congrats.

Good and Sensible
sudhakaranakhilan13 August 2021
I just recall the movie, Mandela that I watched recently and a new one compared with Joker I find that after those five years the society is still unchanged. Mandela also portrays the same issue like Joker yells to tell and when time goes on the issues will go deeper and deeper for sure. Raju Murugan is a promising director who startles me with his debut one Cuckoo which talks about a love story. When he shifted his path like a mature and a proven director he just comes up with a strong political subject which was the exact opposite of his first one. Joker also draws a similar picture like Mandela; also talks about the problems associated with the bureaucracy, with the legislation, with the government, and more than that with the people who always stay silent when any issues come up. You know, when we connect Joker with the current social scenario, the main reason for Modi's second way to get the power lay around a motto that he formulated on his first tenure. And that motto was "Swachh Bharat". It led a new light in front of the poor people resides in the rural areas of India. 'Swachh Bharat' directly concerns a hygiene society and more than that it ensures all sections of the society for better Bathrooms and toilets. In Joker, Mallika also wants a toilet. She finds toiletless in Mannan's house and that's why she rejects his proposal. But when Mannan applies for the toilet, Mallika approves him and they both get married. It is the central issue and subject matter for the film but apart from that element the movie also deals with a lot of issues that we pointed earlier. The title on the one side parallelly worked for Mannan because society marks him as a madman or some kind of a lunatic but when the movie approaches its end we get the idea that Mannan is not the Joker but the entire society is. Joker is a good political film from a good and sensible director.

Disgusting creation in the name of movie.
vignessh-2501924 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
If anything is less than 1 is available,I would have chosen it for this movie. First of all,it disgusts me to call it a movie. It is 2 hours dialogue delivering competition by Rajumurugan through Mannar mannan and Ponnujal voice.

I was really proud of you by reading your Vattiyum Mudalum and presented that book to many. But by seeing your movies,it simply shows that you want to make people to cry by seeing your movies.Hence you portray and design the characters of your movies according to weakness of the people and finally you turn all of them towards you.

You said in an interview that you break the screenplay rules and made the movie. In the name of movie what you have made has no screenplay, story, direction, nothing existing in that. Only fake dialogues, dialogues and dialogues till the climax. If you really want break the rules of screenplay, please watch Quentin Tarantino and Anurag kashyap movies.

In the same interview you said that I got inspired from the Movie 'Life Is Beautiful' and made the Mannar mannan character.I beg you to watch that movie once again. In that movie,Roberto Benigni wants to hide the true situation existing in the camp. In order to save his son,he was acted like that.Meanwhile The director took Only one social evil instance and engage every audience through this screenplay and direction.

Similarly,The way in which you handle the social issues in this movie shows you are an amateur. You took social problems like open defecation, sand mining, etc. But none of these problems were analysed to the roots and not conveyed completely to the audience. These problems were showed in this movie simply to blame the lack of administration. Throughout the movie you keep on blaming and criticizing.

You criticize the 3 Separation of powers (legislative, executive and judicial),then Administration and then finally through Ponnujal character you are blaming, that we(people who come to your movie) are the joker. I don't know what kind of society Rajumurugan is trying to create by quoting all of us are joker. I think you are the one to be the example for 'Perfection'.

If u want to make money, please don't influence the weakness of people. Through dialogue of the movie, you are making the people to think themselves as joker and make the people feel guilty by themselves and also get applause from them. You use the Fascist ideology very well.By instigating the peoples weakness, you turn the audience to think themselves that we(citizens) are not doing anything to the society,so we(citizens) are the JOKER. I think you are big politician than all others.

Next thing, your are not able to tolerate the critic reviewers also. The famous person criticize your first movie before 2 years,Through Mannar mannan and Isai character you mentioned their names in the second movie and you keep one dialogue that 'Freedom of Speech'is allowed to everyone.Like you said,If Freedom of Speech allowed to everyone means, then why you mentioned their names. That much of vengeance you are holding for this long period.

Political satire is not just about scolding the leaders indirectly and get applause from audience. In order to make a real movie, please concentrate on story, screenplay and direction. Please don't do the same in your upcoming movies.

ALL THE BEST RAJUMURUGAN

I have seen things that I shouldn't see
survesh15 August 2016
My expectation of the movie after seeing the trailer was, "not worth my effort to see it". Somehow my friend convinced me and we went as a group of 40 to the theater. In the beginning the movie was funny, the hero was a quirky fool and it was fun to see all that quirkiness. As time goes by Indian political system and how people have changed by it and have turned a blind eye towards basic common sense are shown through sad happenings. Though it was sad, the movie was worth the time I spent there (I hate when any movie goes totally sad). The movie is a good movie that many Indians would like as a group. Children might get uncomfortable and really affected by the sad scenes in the movie

A political satire turned into a devastating and heart-wrenching drama to give the tightest ever slap on System's Face which includes President, PM, Courts, MLAs and Audience.
SAMTHEBESTEST1 July 2021
Joker (2016) : Brief Review -

A political satire turned into a devastating and heart-wrenching drama to give the tightest ever slap on System's Face which includes President, PM, Courts, MLAs and Audience. Joker sounds like a fun film from its title and some even think of it as a satire to give a lecture on system but you're wrong. Trust me, Joker is as much devastating as funny its title sounds and it will wrench your heart like no other satire ever. Mannar Mannan, an ordinary villager, decides to call himself the president of the country and starts fighting against the injustices he comes across in his society. What's his agenda? His past story opens some heartbreaking incidents caused by pathetic system of our country which includes everyone right from the local police to MLA to High Court to Supreme Court to the President of India. Here's a scoop for Bollywood audience, Joker is combination of political Satire+SLB's Guzaarish+Akshay Kumar's Toilet Ek Prem Katha. Watch it and you'll understand what i mean. Joker is a terrific piece of writing, something which needs to be done without fear. My grand salute to Raju Murugan, the writer, for such a daring script and a big kiss for directing the film without any compromises. That Toilet Opening Ceremony Scene should be preserved in Library of Cinema. I haven't seen any such powerful film in the entire decade. How smartly he has written it. At one side someone is bearing the most painful situation of his life and at the same time MLA, Police, President of India and Media are busy celebrating a FAKE Success. TERRIBLE but INCREDIBLE! Everything about this film is natural, realistic and hard hitting, from the performances, dialogues, romance, presentation, cinematography, sets to direction everything. To make our Country powerful and progressive, Joker MUST be shown to the President, PM, Ministers, Police Officers, Judges of SC HC, Civil Services Officers and us Audience who just watches our pathetic system as an audience and says nothing.

RATING - 8.5/10*

Beautiful and Impactful movie
tomkariath-02 October 2020
I was hesitant to watch this movie despite hearing great reviews about it. The total runtime of almost 3 hours didn't help me coax me into watching the movie. But now after watching it, I hope this movie reaches more and more people.

This is not a movie with a commercial movie star with punch dialogues trailing off into intense action sequence in order to save a village. This is a movie that shows a mentally imbalance person trying to stand up for the helpless with regular old protest, though his insanity enables him to go into extreme quirky levels when planning protests.

The movie shows how dark the accepted norm is. Rampant corruption. breach of trust and general fraud are all accepted and it is the people protesting that are shamed and treated as outcasts.

Hard Hitting political satire depicting our mindset.
visharl13 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Raju Murugan joins elite list of directors who elevate Tamil cinema to global standards. Dialogues are sharp, hard hitting and does not spare anyone from the Gods to both the bigwig politicians to the matinée idols and finally to the one who most needs a wake up call – the common who gets it in the climax. Director wins big in telling a very touching love story, disguised as a political satire while also raising the relevant question that if mercy killing should be made legal in this country where many underprivileged people suffer endlessly. He raised a loud voice for the downtrodden and kudos to him for coming out with a truthful film.On the downside a few sequences the pacing lags. The President visit also lacks authenticity with a sparse crowd.

Guru Somasundaram has taken quirkiness to a new level as the suited President, he is equally captivating as the ordinary innocent worker who falls in love with a girl. Mu Ramaswamy plays Ponoonjal the social activist with such natural grace. Ramya Pandian brings to life the local girl who adamantly rejects the hero because his house has no toilet. Gayathri Krishna as Isai is perfect as their spokeswoman and social media manager.

Mannar Mannan who lives in a small village with no toilets and minimal facilities. He believes and behaves as if he is the President of India. The trio go about raising social issues like going to court for a political bigwig's sand truck hurting a goat to fighting for compensation from a school correspondent in whose premises a four year old girl falls into an open well. The court ironically awards a huge compensation for the goat, but in the case of the four year old girl rules that owner of the premises is not responsible. The dejected "President" signs an order to bring "military rule" in the country so that he can take the law in his hands and attempts to stab the correspondent. he is arrested and produced before the court the judge finding that he is not in his right mind orders an investigation and also to give him medical attention. The flashback come to reveal the beautiful love story of Mannar Mannan and Malliga and how due to the nepotism and apathy of the government brings great tragedy to the couple and results in him losing his sanity opening up many questions for everyone in the society to answer. She moves to a state of coma and attempts for mercy killing fails. Meanwhile the sand mining mafia and the others he opposed take a plot to kill him, run him over with a lorry. The climax dialog spoken by the Mu ramaswamy is a tight slap on the apathy of people and our politicians and in fact our political culture. One thing i disliked about the movie was its ending scene suggesting a red revolution and isai joining maoism, which i think should not have been a part of the movie. yet the director prevails across the theme of the story

An absolute gem
akshayamnishanth21 January 2017
This is an absolute gem of a film!

The movie brings out a a set of very real problems that India faces, while portraying them with satire and a splash of tragedy. The movie picks pace quite slowly and at times, in the beginning, leaves you baffled as to whether this is a comedy or a satire or just a stupid movie. However, once the story starts unfolding, you're sucked into it, both mentally and emotionally. There is something in the movie that everyone of us can relate with.

The team behind this film have performed brilliantly, kudos to them all. Special mention to Guru Somasundaram, for his excellent acting and Raju Murugan, for his directorial skills. I feel this is a must watch for everyone who cares about the society. In fact, I don't remember rating or reviewing any film before this, but it feels criminal not to rate a film such as this.

Joker is a timely bold important film.
sriramanadvocate26 December 2016
Raju Murugan's second venture after Cuckoo interested everyone who watched its trailer. I for one entered the theatre hoping to see a good political movie after a long time. The producer of the film must first be congratulated for backing a movie like Joker. The technical aspects of the film are noteworthy beginning with the cinematographer of the film who has captured the beauty of Dharmapuri and the village that lies therein poignantly. Special mention to the aerial shots of the village. The cinematography and lighting went a long way in maintaining the mood of the film and the performances of the pain and the angst was fully captured for the celluloid by Cheziyan. The art director has also added weight to the film wherein his work is inseparable from the real locations and the editing of the movie was crisp and maintained focus on the narrative. Another big pillar for the movie is its music by Sean Roldan. The background score was apt which gelled with the scenes well and couple of songs stood out. Some of the songs could have been slightly better where the situations were well conceived, shot as montages and edited but the emotions did not quite reach the peak with the music.

The performances of the movie stand out starting with its lead Guru Somasundaram who has made his mark firmly with this film. He has fully brought out the innocence, the pain, the helplessness, the outcry of the common man and is ably supported by Ramasamy and others. The writing of the movie needs to be applauded for being bold, political, straightforward and for touching on some burning and current issues. The dialogues are again razor sharp and sometimes even work as slaps. Screenplay of the movie is taut and takes time when required and the balance therein is struck impactfully. The various references to national and regional parties and political leaders required guts and reference to the national flag itself was so ironically well done. Certain moments, actions of characters seemed clichéd and more detailing could have been done in order to avoid certain caricatures. The second half of the movie is mostly melodramatic but given the crux of the film and the overall intended impact, the said melo-dramatic effect were used well and was justified within the narrative. At the eve of India celebrating its Independence Day, Joker raises important questions with reference to the system of governance prevailing in the Country and to the society at large as to their role in it. Joker is a timely bold important must watch film.
