John Turturro

He is the motif for see this serie. Because it gives the expected and the hoped William of Baskerville. But, except him, in many scenes, I prefer the version from 1986. The motif - real simple - the novel is ignored and, in the first episode of serie, the occasions to regret the mix of "ad usum Delphini" and the absence of respect for novel, giving a sort of improvisation is present. You feel regret for John Turturro, prisoner in the cage of paper abbey. Sure, a serie for television. Off course, an Italian one. But you feel than the novel deserves a better perspective, because, in generous manner, Umberto Eco gives everything for a memorable serie. In same measure, I miss Feodor Chaliapin Jr. Very much. His Jorge de Burgo was Jorge of novel, like John Turturro William de Baskerville. And , off course, Salvatore proposed by Ron Perlman. James Cosmo and Stefano Fresi are , maybe, decent options if you ignore the book. Sure, great expectations about Bernardo Gui of Rupert Everett.

Episode 1

The 1986 film adaptation told the mystery in 2 hours.

This Euro pudding has eight hours and will give Umberto Eco's novel room to breath.

The first episode of the television series certainly delves into the backgrounds of William Baskerville (John Turturro) and cruel inquisitor Bernardo Gui (Rupert Everett) called the spawn of satan by a monk he burned on the stake.

Baskerville is a medieval Sherlock Holmes sent to an abbey in Northern Italy and there has been a death, a monk fell from a window. In tow with Baskerville is a novice monk called Adso who dislikes his father.

This was beautiful to look at. I remember the film was carried by its stars Sean Connery and F Murray Abraham. Here Everett stands out, Turturro does some kind of cod English accent.

However I found myself losing interest as it went on. I am not sure I could stick with this for eight ponderous episodes especially after one person turned up and I knew that was the killer.
