Film editing and sound / music can seem old-fashioned and give a low grade. But the story is good. The depiction of life during the war seems realistic. Worth to see.

Underwhelming and kinda kitsch

Warning: Spoilers
It could have been an interesting thriller but for some reason, whoever wrote the script choose the worst villain imaginable: Jack from Will&Grace but evil and Nazi!
I'm probably exaggerating a bit but you get the vibe. The movie started strong but this cartoonish plot twist killed me.

I can't understand the low rating.
It actually is a good movie, not a masterpiece for the ages (it should really be an 8, IMO but gave more hoping to rebalance the misguiding rating).
The movie is well made, the ambiance and time set are credible, the acting is more than decent (with some characters like the inspector/s, the lawyer, etc quite well cast) the plot a bit long winded but credible for the most part (in order to avoid spoilers I cannot tell which part seems less so).
To sum it up while I rarely watch a whole long movie in one sitting I went through this like a breeze and without a yawn. That's quite an accomplishment in my judgement and will look for other works by this director.

Terrific, nuanced story of occupation, fear, and love l

Absolutely extraordinary. A multi-layered, nuanced murder mystery that plays with and against all the stereotypes of war, occupation, resentment, fear - and love. The Nazi occupation of Poland and persecution of the Jews is far more than a backdrop to this intriguing story of a lawyer who helps a Jewish student to hide in full sight of the occupier. Instead the occupation is inextricably bound up in the plot, though it is handled with such deftness and skill that it neither dominates nor is its horror diluted or trivialised to add depth to the story. Black Mercedes, a drama told in a lower key, with only occasional but often brilliant changes in pace and tone, is a quiet, beautifully directed, daring but subtle masterpiece of the genre. Highly recommended.
