The Kings of Summer (2013)
A perfect film in my mind
I love coming of age movies and I love to laugh. In my 17 years I have never seen a movie that has appealed to me so entirely. You can't go into this expecting anything too serious, I think that is the issue that most negative reviewers had. While there are some significant themes here, Kings of Summer is not The Shawshank Redemption. This is not because it fails as a movie, but because it does not try to be anything more than what it is. This is a film that is meant to be a humorous look into the lives of a couple of teenagers. I think there is a tendency among many "movie-nuts" to believe that the only good movies are those that depress you or involve some very dark themes. I guess what I am saying is to go in with an open mind, and just enjoy yourself. Anyone who doesn't feel a bit better leaving this movie than when entering it is obviously trying too hard to be critical. Let go, have a laugh, join the three Kings of Summer.
The Girl Next Door (2004)
Watch this movie, ESPECIALLY if you know little about it.
There are few moments in life where something vastly exceeds your expectations. This movie was one of those things. I saw that this movie was playing on TV and thought that I might as well check it out. I remember seeing commercials for the movie as a young boy, and since then I have always assumed it was just a sex comedy. I'm sure that is what almost everyone thought about the movie honestly. Let me just say one thing; the marketing for this movie really missed the boat. This movie is so much more than a sex comedy; in fact, while being both sexy and funny, I don't think that "The Girl Next Door" fits into that genre. It gives you such a genuinely good feeling when you watch it, it's great. It really reminds you of "Risky Business" when you watch it, both technically and in the plot. I have to say, however, that despite loving Risky Business, I love this movie more. Maybe it's because I'm going through a time in my life similar to this movie, but it really is incredible. The acting, music and plot are all perfect. Just watch it, trust me
Lost: Tricia Tanaka Is Dead (2007)
The definition of joy
There is nothing quite like the feeling you get watching the Dharma Van start up. Seeing the reactions of the actors, the pure joy, is incredible. Without a doubt my favourite Lost moment, this episode is a break from the usual darkness of the Lost episodes. It is a Hurley centric episode, so of course it is hilarious. I laughed consistently throughout the show, and the ending left me smiling from ear to ear. It really brings you back to the moments in Season 1 where the characters can have a bit of fun. In a time when everyone (including the viewer) needs some hope, Hurley comes to the rescue with both a van and a story of his life before the crash. How this episode is not equally appreciated by the rest of fans is a mystery to me. Fun without being pointless, this episode is a must-see
The Beach (2000)
Quite the experience, don't be turned away by the low score
I went into this movie with rather low expectations, but came out quite pleased. The atmosphere created in it is actually pretty believable, and really demonstrates some of the negatives of tourism, while also showcasing some of the most amazing things about tourism. It also explores a number of other themes such as the impossibility of utopia. I have had a totally changed viewpoint on travelling because of this movie. Also, Leonardo Di Caprio is quite good, no idea what people who say he was bad are talking about. If you have any interest in travel, Thailand, the pursuit of paradise or just appreciate good atmospheres, watch this film. Oh, and the opening scene is one of the greatest opening scenes of any movie ever.
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Probably the greatest heist film of all time.
Pulp fiction is an interesting film without a doubt. There are no over the top effects, maybe 3 settings and to be honest not a lot happens. However it is the characters that make this film. This is one of those movies that are not at all complex, but are also exceedingly enjoyable. The acting is pretty good, especially Steve Buscemi. Mr. Pink is without doubt one of the most memorable characters I have ever experienced. Considering the time when this movie was made, it is even more impressive the level of interest this movie achieves. All in all, if you like heist movies, character movies and most of all Tarantino movies, Reservoir dogs cannot be missed.
Go (1999)
An interesting Christmas journey....
What can I say, of all the movies set during Christmas this has to be the most bizarre, yet also one of the most satisfying. That said, the fact that it is set during Christmas is not as important as what actually happens. This movie is a very humorous account of a night from three perspectives. There are moments that you just cannot see coming, and the characters feel surprisingly real. The acting is in some cases (William Fichtner), great, while in others (Sarah Polley), simply okay. However, there is nothing in this movie that I would consider unsatisfactory. It is simply one of the most enjoyable movies I have watched in a long time and I highly recommend it to those who are fans of movies such as Pulp fiction or those of the British TV series "The Inbetweeners"
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Beautiful... do not listen to the critics
This is one of the most amazingly beautifully shot films in history. The cinematography is hands down the greatest that I have ever seen. You will feel so engrossed in the film as to in parts question whether or not this is a film or whether you are in the streets of Kyoto. Not only is there superb acting and plot, the costumes and settings are equally fantastic. This is one of the few films that has made me cry. You feel a deep connection to the characters and are filled with anticipation to see how their lives end up. Do NOT listen to those who say this film is culturally in-sensitive, they are just looking for a reason to complain. Honestly I know a fair bit about Japanese culture and it is tough to get much more realistic than this and still appeal to the masses. Of course there are inaccuracies, this is a film not a documentary on pre-war Japan. An amazing journey that cannot be missed!
Ajeossi (2010)
A movie with heart
The Man from Nowhere is not exactly unique. The premise is a young girl who is kidnapped by drug-dealers/ organ traffickers after her mother get's involved with them. Her neighbour is a mysterious young man who owns a pawnshop and while he doesn't show it to her face, he cares deeply for her and she is his only friend in the world. What follows is a riveting ride featuring the somewhat reluctant main character in his quest to bring back the young girl. Some may refer to this as a revenge flick, however I do not think this is the case as the violence committed by the man is not undue; he always attempts to get her back without fighting, however obviously this does not work out. The cinematography is superb, as is the acting and the writing. It is kind of tough to get the full feel of the film without being able to understand Korean, but I managed as the subtitles were, for the most part, accurate. The characters were great. I usually become annoyed with the main character(s) and start to quietly cheer for the antagonists, however in the Man From Nowhere not even doubts of the main hero came across my mind, shocking for someone like me. You quickly become emotionally involved with the characters. If you enjoy action of any sort, you will love "The Man From Nowhere". Bin Won is great, the little girl is surprisingly good and the supporting actors never detract from the movie, a great sign. Do yourself a favour and check this movie out.
Never Back Down (2008)
Pretty typical, but also very enjoyable
There is nothing really new here, it's similar to the Karate Kid. However, this is much better in my opinion. I found the Karate Kid to be really cheesy and unrealistic, while this is very easy to relate to. I could almost see it happening in the real world. I like the main character. And in most cases I am usually bored in movies by the time of climax and typically want the antagonist to win, however this time I felt genuinely attached and excited about the final battle, which was very surprising for me. Also, the soundtrack is integrated seamlessly into the movie, so why not give this movie a try. Maybe not the best movie ever, but very fun to watch
