1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Director: Tobe Hooper | Stars: Marilyn Burns, Edwin Neal, Allen Danziger, Paul A. Partain
Votes: 183,805 | Gross: $30.86M
Without question, my all-time favorite. The ominous atmosphere, the quiet sense of foreboding, and the grainy, unsettlingly realistic look and feel of this film have yet to be matched. And very little gore. It's funny reading some of the old reviews describing how "bloody" and "gory" the film was - it's amazing what the mind will conjure up when you feed it with a little bit of suggestion.

Horror. Comedy. Masterpiece. And special f/x that make today's CGI-laden bologna look silly. CGI has its place, but in horror films is not one of them.

The power of suggestion. This movie is all about atmosphere and suggestion - The Val Lewton formula: "A love story, three scenes of suggested horror and one of actual violence. Fadeout. It's all over in less than 70 minutes." I can't imagine that formula working with today's blood & violence-obsessed youth.

Yes, I know, this film doesn't fall into either the horror or thriller category. So? It's called "The Curse of the Cat People"! With a title like that, it's going on my list. And it's also one of the greatest, most imaginative curve-balls of a sequel ever made: you're going to follow up a story about a vengeful, homicidal cat-woman with a story about a lonely, over-imaginative little girl who befriends some lonely, crazy old lady, and who may or may not be visited by the ghost of said cat-woman? Awesome!
