Comprising 1994’s The Kingdom, 1997’s The Kingdom II, and 2022’s much belated The Kingdom: Exodus, Lars von Trier’s television miniseries trilogy plays like the unholy love child of St. Elsewhere and Twin Peaks, the latter an acknowledged influence on the director. The trilogy works brilliantly as a blackly comic piss take on running a hospital, with all its attendant frustrations and absurdities, as well as a blast of surreal weirdness that seeks to expose the dark underbelly of its titular locale.
But the parallels between The Kingdom series and its forebears are even more specific. The final episode of Exodus dramatically hinges on a snow globe containing a miniature of the hospital, just as St. Elsewhere famously ended on a similar image. As with Twin Peaks: The Return, over two decades passed between the second and third season of The Kingdom, allowing for some intriguing narrative resets and retakes.

In 1971, just six years after Frank Herbert published his groundbreaking science-fiction novel "Dune," Arthur P. Jacobs' Apjac International obtained the rights to the story for a film adaptation. The producer behind "Planet of the Apes" was ready to craft another world set in a distant future, but with the sequel film "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" on its way, "Dune" was delayed.
Jacobs went through a handful of different directors and screenwriters in early development, but he tragically passed away in 1973. David Lynch would eventually bring "Dune" to the big screen in 1984, but there were multiple failed attempts that paved the way for his film and a remake in his wake that led to Denis Villeneuve's recent adaptations. The messy histories of failed "Dune" adaptations could justify their own feature-length documentaries but allow this to be a crash course on the bizarre "Dune" movies that never came to be.

Skeletons in the Closet is the latest film from director Asif Akbar. After sitting through several abysmal films he’s directed, most recently Clown Motel as well as an even larger pile of duds he was a producer on, I knew enough not to have high expectations. Even that wasn’t enough preparation for what I was about to endure.
Mark and Valentina are dealing with financial problems. Those problems are about to get a lot worse, as instead of the raise he was expecting, Mark gets a pink slip. As if that wasn’t enough bad news, their daughter Jenny’s has brain cancer and the doctors are willing to let her die unless Mark and Valentina can come...

It was about a year ago that we learned that Hideo Kojima would be bringing his acclaimed game Death Stranding to the big screen, thanks to a partnership with Barbarian executive producer Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios. Now A24 is getting in on the act with the announcement that they’ll be partnered with Kojima’s Kojima Productions to help out with the adaptation of Death Stranding.
A24 made the announcement themselves via a post on X. They’ve even marked the occasion by unveiling a set of new shirts featuring the A24 logo done in a Death Stranding style.
Kojima responded to the announcement in a press release, saying: “A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted...

Game designer Hideo Kojima, creator of the hugely popular “Death Stranding,” had two pieces of news coming out of the Game Awards 2023.
On Thursday evening at the Game Awards show in L.A., Kojima appeared on stage with filmmaker Jordan Peele to announce his next game project: “Od,” which Kojima describes as an “immersive and totally new style of game” that will explore “what it means to Od on fear.” It’s being produced in partnership with Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios.
In addition, Kojima announced that his documentary film “Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds” — which follows his journey to form an independent games studio and his creative process behind “Death Stranding” — will be distributed worldwide in the spring of 2024 exclusively on Disney+.
Peele, the acclaimed director of “Get Out,” “Us” and “Nope,” will be “one of several talented storytellers” involved in the “Od” project, according to Kojima Productions. “We are...

Hideo Kojima has been teasing a new title that’s not Death Stranding 2 off and on, as well as teasing a collaboration with Microsoft. Those two things came together at The Game Awards 2023 with the announcement of Od for the Xbox Series. More likely, we saw glimpses of Od as Overdose, which has been leaked over the past couple of years. No sign of Margaret Qualley, however.
Kojima and Peele both appeared at The Game Awards to announce Od, with Kojima hinting at other collaborators working on this game, referring to them as “The Avengers”.

Exclusive: Cameras are rolling on Stargazer, a new feature from artist-filmmaker Christian Neuman, which producers have described as a “modern psychic thriller” starring Rosalind Halstead and Poppy Delevingne.
The pic is Neuman’s second feature, following the 2019 horror feature Skin Walker, starring Udo Kier and Amber Anderson. The first week of principal photography has wrapped up in London, with the production now in Belgium and set to conclude in Luxembourg by mid-December.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Stargazer follows Fey Vilar, portrayed by Rosalind Halstead, a celebrated actress grappling with the abduction of her son, Paul. Using performance as a coping mechanism, Fey’s life takes an unexpected turn when she is offered a role in a play in which she must embody the character of Estelle Maar, Paul’s captor, in order to uncover the truth about her son’s disappearance. Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

Comic book fans in the late 1990s likely recall the ambitious plan by Artisan Entertainment, a then-rising indie film studio, to make a long series of mid-budget films based on Marvel superheroes. Avi Arad, then the CEO of Marvel Entertainment, had overseen a deal that would allow Artisan to make movies with Black Panther, Thor, Deadpool, Ant-Man, Iron Fist, and Morbius, as well as Power Pack, Longshot, and an irreverent dark comedy about Mort the Dead Teenager. The deal was finalized in 2000. In 2003, however, Artisan was acquired by Lionsgate, effectively ending what would have been the ambitiously planned early-2000s mid-budget version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite how successful Disney's MCU would become a decade later, Marvel was once considered a non-viable source of film revenue. Indeed, while comic book sales were up across the board in the 1990s, Marvel was struggling to make their characters more visible in the marketplace.

Four meddling teenagers and a dog. From that simplest of premises, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears created an idea that has carried television series, live-action big-budget films, numerous animated movies, and countless parodies. So successful was Scooby-Doo that Hannah-Barbera launched several spin-offs, including Jabberjaw (teens and a talking whale) and Speed-Buggy (teens and a talking dune buggy). But there was something special about the alchemy Ruby and Spears derived for Scooby-Doo that made it stand the test of time. With its monster plots, Scooby-Doo became the ultimate introduction to horror for even the most timid kid.

"You can't go half-way with 'Swan Lake.'" Who's ready to dive head-first into the world of ballet? Dogwoof has revealed an official promo trailer for the documentary film Swan Song, premiering soon at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. Not to be confused with Mahershala Ali's sci-fi film Swan Song or Udo Kier's indie comedy film Swan Song, both with the same name, this is a doc about the opera "Swan Lake". The Canadian film offers a deep look of the incredible devotion, artistry and sacrifices that Karen Kain and the National Ballet of Canada dancers make in their pursuit of creating something unique, meaningful, beautiful. TIFF says it's a powerfully intimate look at the process of putting on a performance of "Swan Lake". The fest adds: "Even something as simple as Kain pushing for the dancers to abandon the pink tights of the swan costumes — thus acknowledging...

Whether it’s superhero fatigue or something else, there’s no denying that the MCU and the DC Universe are falling on hard times. Secret Invasion set record lows for Marvel, as did the reviews for Ant-Man the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Flash stumbled to become the lowest money maker in Warner Bros. history.
But let’s get a little perspective, shall we? These movies aren’t great, but superhero movies are, on the whole, better than what came before the MCU launched in 2008. Throughout the 80s and 90s, superhero movies were almost embarrassed to be about superheroes, forcing Batman into a lame revenge plot for the 1989 film and refusing to let Frank Castle wear his death’s head logo in the Cannon Films direct-to-video release. With the embrace of the genre has come better effects, brighter costumes, and outrageous plots that better reflect the high stakes the genre demands.

In the Marvel vs. DC debate, it's important to remember that the latter had a headstart of several decades. Some of DC Comics' most popular characters were introduced on the page in the late 1930s and early 1940s, allowing them to stand at the very base of the pop culture firmament. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman both enjoyed massive success on the page and on the screen before the hotshot company Marvel entered its Golden Age in earnest. Marvel's star characters Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, et al, didn't hit shelves until the early '60s. While Marvel found its footing, Batman was starring in one of the best superhero movies ever made.
In cinemas, it took Marvel equally long to find a toehold. Films like "Superman" and "Batman" were overwhelmingly huge for decades, while Marvel had to be content with the success of "The Incredible Hulk" on television.

Dracula has been dead and loving it for over 125 years. The blood-sucking count has been adapted to screen in every conceivable way, and he shows no signs of stopping. Earlier this year we got the legendary vampire in the form of Nicolas Cage in "Renfield." He's been Bela Lugosi, and Christopher Lee, and Frank Langella, and Udo Kier, and Gary Oldman, and — well, I could go on and on, until the sun comes up and turns me into dust. Bram Stoker's vampire captures our imagination; he's sleek, seductive, and deadly. He can woo and kill in equal measure. We love Dracula, don't we folks? That said, with so many Dracula movies out there, what else is there to do with the material? I mean, can anything come close to the dizzying, sophisticated highs of "Dracula 2000"?
"The Last Voyage of the Demeter" takes a somewhat novel approach. Rather than adapt Stoker's entire epistolary novel,...

In Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s “Pirate Jenny” from “The Threepenny Opera,” a peasant hotel maid avenges herself for the cruelty she suffers from her fellow townspeople by imagining a pirate ship that sweeps into town, flattening the village and everyone in it. So, of course, the Danish king of saintly put-upon martyrs, Lars von Trier, found this material suitable for making a film every bit as alienating to the audience as the works of Brecht: 2003’s “Dogville.” Von Trier also centered his film around a blockbuster movie star, whose under-a-bell-jar image he set upon to deconstruct: Nicole Kidman.
Freshly off her Best Actress Oscar win for “The Hours” and also out of her messily public but oddly inscrutable divorce from Tom Cruise, Kidman flew to rural Trollhättan in Sweden to get on a soundstage with a truly there-are-no-words-amazing cast: Paul Bettany, Lauren Bacall, Harriet Andersson, Stellan Skarsgård,...

This episode of The Black Sheep was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
I’ll always have a soft spot for the horror of the late ’90s. It wasn’t the best of the decade, but it does contain that silly and ambitious mix of dark edginess and psychological tension. Coming somewhat from the boom of the ’90s type of thriller, the religious horror resurgence came out of changing tastes. And though it didn’t all work out, there was a style and tone that I’ll always love. So what happens when an action superstar tries to grow while the genre around him changes into a different beast? You get the ridiculous but damn fun End of Days (watch it Here) on this episode of The Black Sheep.

Plot: After an accident derails their exploits in Europe, The Hunters must band back together to hunt down history’s most infamous Nazi—Adolf Hitler—who’s hiding in South America. Meanwhile, a look to the past reveals Meyer Offerman (Al Pacino) encountering a dangerous threat that could unravel his secret and expose his true identity, with explosive reverberations for our Hunters.
Review: It is rare to see a television series go out on its own terms after such a short time on the air. Despite premiering three years ago, the second season of Hunters was delayed due to Covid-19. After so many years away, the dramatic series about Nazi hunters in the 1970s returns with a vastly different sophomore season which also serves as its last. I enjoyed the first season of this pulpy exploitation thriller, but I loved the second despite it feeling like a wholly different series.

The first season of "Hunters" was simultaneously like a bolt of lightning and a lightning rod. Its presentation of the atrocities of the Holocaust was heavily criticized for exaggerating real-life horrors and trivializing them as a result. Its tonal inconsistencies were often misinterpreted or disregarded as careless and messy. Certain scenes were deemed overly theatrical or dramatic to a fault, and arguments were made that the message was lost as a result. Some folks also just didn't like it, and that's fair.
The exaggerations of the Holocaust are a double-edged sword. They're necessary because the world increasingly acts as if the Holocaust as we know it is in itself an exaggeration or an outright lie. And yet, exaggerating things further, making them more horrific because the truth no longer seems to horrify people, puts the community at risk of being disregarded as liars. The wild and erratic tonal shifts across the season were carefully constructed,...

It’s been some time since viewers last joined Hunters, the series about a group of vigilantes on a mission to make Nazis in hiding pay for their crimes. Now the wait for Season 2 is nearly over as Jonah (Logan Lerman) once again leads a ragtag team on their biggest job to date: finding Hitler. As viewers who tuned into Season 1 will recall, that was the major cliffhanger ending revealing that the man in charge of the Nazi party (played by Udo Kier) was in fact still very much alive in the ’70s and living on a private compound with Eva “The Colonel” Braun (Lena Olin). But this reveal wasn’t exactly made to Jonah nor most of the Hunters team as it was Joe (Louis Ozawa) who was taken into captivity by The Colonel and her people. I really enjoy the yearly ritual of delving into the depths of the year to reflect on my favourite watches for Directors Notes and have done so now for over a decade. When I went to write my top ten last year, I had just heard about the sudden death of my good friend and artistic mentor in Nottingham; Carol Crowe. I was just too sad to even open my laptop and we ran away to Whitby to see the new year in instead. I needed to feel cold air on my face and see comforting, familiar views.

The first teaser for Prime Video's "Hunters" season 2 is here, and if ever there were a time for a series about Nazi hunters in America to make a return, this is that time. Unfortunately for "Hunters" fans, the show's second season will be its last. But it's going out with a bang, pitting Jewish protagonist Jonah Heidelbaum (Logan Lerman) and his fellow vigilantes against the evilest Nazi of them all: Adolph Hitler, played by Udo Kier.

From Melancholia to Antichrist, Nymphomaniac to Breaking the Waves, Von Trier has accomplished everything from musicals to dramas and more. Hospitals can often be terrifying places. Bridges between the living and the dead, some of the worst human suffering imaginable is housed in their walls and many who enter through their swinging doors never come back out. We often enter hospitals at our most vulnerable point and must trust strangers to care for us in our darkest hours. Lars Von Trier brings this type of terror to life in The Kingdom, a miniseries trilogy set in the neurosurgical wing of Copenhagen’s National Hospital. More Twin Peaks than Grey’s Anatomy, The Kingdom is a terrifying journey through the halls of a sinister hospital. Horrifying tales include a ghostly ambulance, a maniacal surgeon who views the bodies of his patients as macabre trophies, a careless doctor who makes life threatening mistakes, and a woman impregnated from beyond the grave.
The mind-bending series debuted in 1994 with four episodes airing on the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.

This review originally ran September 2, 2022, in conjunction with the miniseries’ premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Lars von Trier’s “The Kingdom Exodus” warrants comparison with David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: The Return” for multiple parallels between the two: Both are peak prestige TV with indelible auteurist hallmarks, returning for their third seasons after a quarter-century hiatus. Both invoke the supernatural, concoct elaborate lore and boast captivated cult-like followings.
Though the Danish “Kingdom” is of course much lesser known, its first two seasons did make enough of a cultural impact through international theatrical runs to spawn a Stephen King–created American remake, “Kingdom Hospital.”
“Kingdom Exodus,” making its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, gets much more meta. In the cold open, Karen (Bodil Jørgensen) watches von Trier’s signoff from the previous season’s finale on TV. Frustrated by the series’ loose ends, she heads to bed and...

The first time Bumper Allen (Adam Devine) meets music producer Thea (Lera Abova) in Peacock’s Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, she’s skeptical about his chances of making it as a singer. He has, she brusquely declares, a “backpfeifengesicht — a face that is deserving of a slap.”
Bumper, who’s heard it before, takes her comment in stride: “It’s my round cheeks, coupled with my whole personality.” Indeed, Bumper’s slappability is precisely what made him so fun in the first Pitch Perfect — his ever-present smirk and bullying ways made him not only easy to hate, but fun to root against.
As Bumper well knows, however, not every member of an ensemble is destined to break out as a solo act, and that unfortunately proves to be the case in his eponymous TV spinoff. The series, created by Megan Amram and Elizabeth Banks,...

You can tell if somebody’s watched German Netflix series Dark by the furrow in their brow and the delirium in their eyes. The 2017 – 2020 time-travel mystery required a flip-chart of graphs and diagrams to explain, but proved a cult hit for Netflix and led to its creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar signing a deal with the streamer. 1899 (read our spoiler-free review here) is the result.
“Knowing that we did Dark, everyone can be assured that [1899] is going to be something weird and wild and crazy,” Friese promised Deadline about her and Odar’s new Netflix series. The writer-directors vowed not to repeat themselves with the new eight-episode period drama, but still to give their audience a fun puzzle that returns to the pair’s mystery roots.

Megan Amram is a weird person, and I say that as a compliment from the bottom of my weird little heart. The hilarious writer known for "Silicon Valley," "The Good Place," "An Emmy For Megan," and the best meme in the entirety of the Trump Administration is now a showrunner, bringing "Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin" to Peacock. With a trilogy as popular as the "Pitch Perfect" films, Amram was tasked with the difficult job of figuring out how to keep the same energy and sense of humor as the 2010s film series, while following the journey of Bumper Allen, who started out as the movies' main antagonist. A series centered on Bumper doesn't sound like it would work, but with Amram at the helm, "Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin" does the impossible and breathes new life into the decade-old series.

The Al Pacino-led Hunters will end with Season 2 on Prime Video. Hunters is a fictional story about Nazi hunters who discover hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials in 1977 New York City. The Prime Video Nazi-hunting drama series "Hunters" ended on a rather explosive cliffhanger in its first season, with the wild revelation that Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun (Lena Olin) were still apparently alive and well in the 1970s. The first season cut to black on that shocking and potentially shark-jumping note over two years ago, and we haven't heard from the team of hunters since.
Luckily, their hiatus is about to come to an end. David Weil's series is set to return for its second season in January, and we'll finally find out what happened after captured Nazi-hunter Joe Mizushima (Louis Ozawa) sat down to break bread at a dinner table that ended up including the infamous dictator, his wife, and a creepy matching set of blonde boys who definitely look like clones. When it does return, German character actor Udo Kier will be playing the role of Hitler.
