Italian directors Marco and Antonio Manetti, a.k.a. the Manetti Bros. and best known for the “Diabolik” franchise, are producing the next film by “Orlando” filmmaker Daniele Vicari. The film, titled “You Get Tired of Killing,” is based on the life of a real-life gangster who grew tired of being in charge of running the Mafia’s dirty business.
Speaking exclusively with Variety at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where they are the subject of a career-spanning retrospective, the directing duo confirmed “You Get Tired of Killing” is in pre-production. The film is being produced by Mompracem, the production company run by the Manettis alongside German sales company Beta Film and actor/producer Pier Giorgio Bellocchio, the son of Italian director Marco Bellocchio.
Vicari, whose previous work includes “Diaz — Don’t Clean Up This Blood,” “Velocità Massima” and Venice Film Festival award-winning “The Human Cargo,” joins a growing talent roster at Mompracem.

Keanu Reeves has opened up about his admiration for Interpol and Kim Gordon in the latest episode of Amoeba Records’ “What’s in My Bag?” YouTube series.
Reeves’ band Dogstar — which recently reunited for the first time in two decades with their album Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees — perused the Hollywood, California record store for vinyl of their choice, and broke down their picks.
The bassist-actor’s first vinyl was a massive special edition of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, as performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. “One of the joys of going to a record store is discovery, but also like there’s things in life… Aren’t there things in life you’ve heard about but never experienced?” beamed Reeves.
His second pick was Interpol’s 2022 LP. “Big fan of this band, Interpol,” Reeves said, while flipping the vinyl to admire its artwork.

A meditation on the work of German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer, Wim Wenders’ concise, spare 3D documentary Anselm allows us to spend time in the presence of the artist and man. Both born in 1945, Wenders and Kiefer share much of the same DNA as creators who tackle the history of a divided country traumatized and silenced. For Wenders, a global filmmaker whose other new picture this year, the fantastic Perfect Days, was made in Japan, Anselm is a thoughtful, contemplative return to some of the themes explored in his seminal Wings of Desire.
Anselm gravitates between past and present, the result splitting the difference between the kind of experimental film one might find at TIFF Wavelengths––a slow meditation on landscape, surfaces, space, and performative moments––and a quick biographical sketch produced for an art museum retrospective. Shot by Franz Lustig in 6K 3D, the film deserves to be...

The Other Black Girl paints Diana Gordon as the villain of the series, who forces her hair grease on other black women so they become amiable members of white workplaces. She’s a sinister old woman who gets these women to dance to her tune after converting them to members of the Other Black Girls. But the real villains of this story are, of course, the racist workplaces that don’t give these women the promotions they deserve, the work they are more than capable of doing, and the respect that they ought to receive. Diana’s methods are not the best, and she is, in fact, exploiting her own people because of the position she has reached. The Other Black Girl follows the story of a young woman named Nella, who gets sucked into a web of crazies when another black girl joins her otherwise completely white workplace. Hazel is the new,...

Kirill Serebrennikov, the celebrated Russian playwright and director whose last three films competed at Cannes, is set to create and direct a sensual, gothic TV adaptation of “The Phantom of the Opera,” Gaston Leroux’s 19th century novel.
Serebrennikov’s TV debut, the subversive six-part miniseries will be shot in English and is being produced by Aude Albano at Pathé, in association with Ilya Stewart at Hype Studios. The latter has collaborated with Serebrennikov on his critically acclaimed movies, including “Leto,” “Petrov’s Flu” and “Tchaikovsky’s Wife,” all of which have played at Cannes.
Described as a “riveting psychological thriller with horrific undertones” by the production team, the story of “The Phantom of the Opera” revolves around an up-and-coming artist, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a disfigured musical genius, a monster haunting the Paris Opera House. Regardless of its importance to the storytelling process, film music is too often an afterthought. There are a variety of theories that composers have as to why, and they’re mostly related to a lack of education. Eugene Hütz, founder and frontman with U.S. gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, would likely to have ended up a painter wearing “dirty pants and long hair” had his parents not left the Soviet Union when he was 16.
“I would probably have become a painter, as there was more of a path paved in that in my family,” he says. “I was drawing most of my childhood and my uncle – Mikhail Mykolayev – is a pretty well-known painter who still lives in Kyiv.”
Fresh from playing a brief, impromptu solo guitar gig at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, following the international premiere of a new documentary about the band, “Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story,” Hütz fits the bill, although his khaki cargo pants are not paint spattered.

Leos Carax's Annette is exclusively showing on Mubi in many countries starting November 26, 2021 in the series Luminaries. The relationship between western opera and cinema has often been direct and codependent, with one “bigger than life” art form exchanging notes with the other. There’ve been films based on opera and vice-versa, the relatively recent trend of operas being live broadcast in cinemas, and the use of moving images have found their way to the opera stage. Two motion pictures, the film Annette and the television series Perfect Lives, give this connection a deeper treatment. To varying extents, they mine the vein between opera and cinema, combining libretto, music, and moving images. What they discover, directly or indirectly, are past forms, styles and approaches to art ripe for repurposing in the pursuit of artistic reflection and evolution. Annette, the new film directed by Leos Carax, co-written with Ron and Russell Mael of the band Sparks,...

In a better time for the world, we’d all be hitting the karaoke bar tonight to mourn the late great Jim Steinman. This man was more than just the composer behind mega-bombastic hits by Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler, Celine Dion, Air Supply, and so many others. He was the patron saint of karaoke singers. His idea of the perfect song was a powder keg giving off sparks, one that anybody could belt out loud. Think of a karaoke anthem — “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,...

Spike Lee loves cinema and he loves making movies, but, perhaps more than either, he loves filmmakers who are willing to share that kind of love for the art and its craft.
For Lee, it began in the early ’80s at NYU’s film school, where his classmates included Ernest Dickerson and Ang Lee, and where Jim Jarmusch, two years his senior, gave him the confidence to believe that his goals were achievable. It was in 1985, however, that he had an epiphany, when NYU old boy Martin Scorsese returned to his alma mater with a print of his new film After Hours. “After the screening,” Lee recalls, “he didn’t run out of the theater. He stayed around. I went up to him and told him my name and what I wanted to do. In that very moment, Marty took an interest in me as a filmmaker, and we’ve...

“Bigotry and insanity are different,” Psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis says at the beginning of HBO’s documentary Crazy, Not Insane. The idea that someone can kill for perfectly sane, yet irrational reasons goes to the heart of the controversial doctor’s work. Her mother seemed to be able to name every famous anti-Semite. Henry Ford, Richard Wagner, Joe Kennedy and “even Walt Disney,” Lewis lists. The man who made Bambi, which made Lewis cry as a little girl, hated Jews, she bemoans as the film unfolds. You never know what lies underneath even the most innocent appearing exteriors, director Alex Gibney’s documentary, highlights.
The documentary then cuts to one of Dr. Lewis’ earliest cases, the serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin. He preferred to be called a multiple slayer. While Lewis explains how she hoped, at the time of her interviews, she would not be prejudiced, the documentary explores...

Spike Lee recently admitted that none of the major Hollywood studios wanted to take a chance on his latest joint Da 5 Bloods, but thankfully Netflix stepped in to fund the war drama, which has been showered with critical praise and is already being talked about as one of the best movies of 2020.
The pic quickly shot to the top of the streaming service’s Top 10 lists, and while the story is rife with social and political subtext like almost all of the filmmaker’s work, the themes seem even more timely and prescient today given all the social unrest and push for change that’s happening all over the world.
Lee has never been shy in holding back his opinions, of course, and splicing real footage into his fictional narrative only makes the events that transpire all the more powerful, but one of the more unsung aspects of Da 5 Bloods is the soundtrack.

Cyrill Boss and Philipp Stennert, the creators of Sky hit series “Pagan Peak,” will direct “Hagen Von Tronje,” based on the Wolfgang Hohlbein bestseller, a reinterpretation of the Nibelungen saga. Martin Moszkowicz and Oliver Berben will produce the project for Constantin Film as both a feature-length film and a six-part series. Production will start next year.
Hohlbein, whose book was published in 1986, turns the constellation of the Nibelungen saga – best known as the inspiration for Richard Wagner’s operatic cycle “Der Ring des Nibelungen” – upside down in order to focus on the story’s core messages: any means are justified in the struggle for power, and love is a more powerful weapon than the sword.
Hagen von Tronje, the dark knight of the Nibelungen saga, becomes a lonely hero. The last of the Vikings, allied with the ancient gods, he stands for courage, loyalty and individual freedom. Siegfried, the ruler of the Nibelungen,...

“So it begins” is a pretty optimistic line on which to end a would-be franchise-starter — and one not necessarily warranted by “Corbin Nash,” a solemnly silly mashup of ideas from “Blade,” “Batman” and “Sin City,” accomplished on a much lower budget than any of those far, far better films. Still, it’s a movie that’s resourcefully accomplished on comparatively slim means, and less choosy fantasy action fans will find things to enjoy in its foamy cocktail of vampires, kickboxing and neo-noir. Others may be drawn by the bizarro factor of top-billed Corey Feldman as a campily cross-dressing bloodsucker.
Regardless, this is the kind of not exactly good movie that a certain type of fanboy (or girl) will pronounce good fun, or at least a passable guilty pleasure. Marking the second feature for the English Jagger Brothers — Ben directs, Dean stars; both produced and had a hand in the screenplay — this U.

Richard Wagner’s instrumental Masterpiece, Ride of the Valkyries, is a very well known bit of music that is used far and wide and has been heard in movies and TV for decades now. The composer might not have allowed such a thing to happen had he still been alive as the piece was intended to be quite serious and adhere to the mythological aspect of the eight Valkyrie sisters of Brunnhilde as they ready themselves to transport the fallen to Valhalla. Still, for all that it has still become a very recognizable track thanks to its many different inclusions in

Back in black? Not exactly.
Despite scores of rumors and half-baked story claims, Justice League never alluded to Black Suit Superman in any shape or form, leaving fans to wonder what could have been. And just as Henry Cavill teased viewers via Instagram throughout the film’s storied (messy?) production – not to mention those Justice League merchandise items depicting a black-suited Man of Steel – cinematographer Fabian Wagner has since confirmed that, yes, Cavill donned the famous armor on set. It just didn’t make the cut.
That’s something that can be said about a lot of Justice League content, given Warner Bros. reportedly placed a two-hour mandate on its DC mega-movie soon after Joss Whedon replaced Zack Snyder at the helm. As you surely know, a fan petition asking the studio to give us Snyder’s footage has already surpassed a staggering 150,000 signatures and continues to grow each and every day and now,...

Regardless of whether you loved or hated Justice League, we’re all aware of how a fair amount of footage was left on the cutting room floor. Perhaps it was either stuff that was shot by Zack Snyder that Warner Bros. didn’t want to use or, maybe, it just didn’t gel with the final cut; the latter happens all the time in the film industry. Still, there was one omission that remains a hot topic for discussion, that being Superman’s black costume.
For well over a year, many of us who were familiar with the source material expected to see the Last Son of Krypton don some darker threads upon his resurrection, just as he did in the comics. But, in Justice League‘s theatrical cut, the closest we’d gotten to that was him wearing some black slacks.

In late 2006, with much fanfare, Tom Cruise was announced as headlining a revived United Artists. But what went wrong?
Lurking in the corners of Netflix UK is a not-very-widely-seen Tom Cruise movie, that a decade ago was all set to herald a new filmmaking dawn. Directed by Robert Redford, and with a cast that includes Redford, Cruise, Meryl Streep and a then-relatively-unknown Andrew Garfield, Lions For Lambs looked on paper to be a heavyweight political drama. Its focus is on three stories: an ambitious politician giving an interview to tough reporter, an army platoon being ordered to go on a top secret mission by said politician, and a professor trying to talk a promising student into turning his life around.
It looked like Oscar-bait. It turned out to be a footnote to the failure to resurrect United Artists.

A long time ago, a grade-schooler got his hands on a spaceship. He followed the assembly instructions as best he could, snapping on the cannons, the landing gear, the tiny interstellar-chess table. Soon enough, Rian Johnson was holding his very own Millennium Falcon. "The first thing I did," he recalls, "was throw it across the room, to see how it would look flying." He grins. "And it broke."
Johnson grew up, went to film school, made some good stuff, including the entertainingly twisted 2012 sci-fi drama Looper. He's nearly 44 now, though...

Justice League might not be the hit that Warner Bros. were no doubt hoping it would be, but there really is much for fans to love in the movie – no one can deny that. As it brings together six of the DC universe’s biggest names, there’s a lot of history to draw from and, while it doesn’t have much time to do that in its surprisingly lean 120 minute runtime, it tries its best to call back to a few classic comic book arcs and characters, as well as paying homage to previous DC pics that have come before.
It’s not only the easter eggs that fans need to be on the lookout for, though, as the film is also stuffed full of cameos, including one from its director: Zack Snyder. Yes, as he so often does, Snyder snuck himself into the movie for a very brief appearance,...

You’re not the only one crossing your fingers in the hope that Warner Bros. will release a director’s cut of Justice League.
Fabian Wagner, cinematographer on the pic and one of the DPs currently working on Game of Thrones season 8, has encouraged WB to dive through the archives and piece together all of those scenes that were allegedly left on the cutting room floor. Indeed, one need only look over Justice League‘s trailer campaign to identify all those shots that didn’t make the final cut.
Rumor has it that Warner imposed a two-hour mandate on Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon’s blockbuster, which goes some way to explaining the truncated runtime – at only 119 minutes in length, Justice League is undoubtedly one of the shortest superhero films in recent memory. Hell, it even took Wagner by surprise:

Andrew takes a nerdy dive into the pop culture real and fictional that's made its way into the world of Red Dwarf...
Creating culture within science-fiction can be tricky. It’s potentially alienating, with the audience required to understand allusions without a reference point. Then again, if you throw in too many contemporary references, the future starts to look dated pretty quickly. Red Dwarf has walked that fine line, building its own stars and entertainment but chucking in the familiar, just to keep the world grounded. We take a look at humanity’s future culture as seen through the eyes of Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten and Holly.

Warner Bros. cartoons are still amazingly enjoyable, especially considering they all had the same basic plot: Wile E. Coyote chases Road Runner. Sylvester chases Tweety Bird. And Elmer Fudd hunts for his ultimate prey: the uncatchable Bugs Bunny. Obviously, the scenario changed up a bit from time to time, but never so successfully as in Chuck Jones’ 1957 faux opera, “What’s Opera, Doc?”
A new article on animation website The Dot And Line tells the story of the cartoon that 1,000 animators rated the greatest of all time in 1994. Dot And Line calls it “a laughably loose adaptation of Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre; Jones took the operatic pomp of Norse mythology and superimposed it onto the classically cartoonish circumstance of Elmer Fudd attempting to kill Bugs Bunny.” Valuable perspective comes from Stephen Fossati, director Chuck Jones’ last protégé. “Last Chance U,” like any other show worth a sophomore season, carefully approaches both past and present. The East Mississippi Community College Lions, the football team profiled in the first season of the Netflix documentary series, are back again, but this new round of stories lives in the shadow of those that came before. This sequel keeps the established skeleton of a fall slate of games, brings back some beloved characters and checks in on departed favorites. The subject may be sports, but this is as TV as TV gets.
The show’s second season, tracking Emcc’s 2016 season, has the added layer of self-awareness. As a town shy of 1,000 people, director Greg Whiteley’s Netflix series has now created an identity for Scooba, Mississippi, one that not all its citizens are particularly happy with. Football players are never just football players, especially at any level above Pop Warner. But...

Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Walerian Borowczyk's The Greatest Love of All Time (1978) is available to watch on Mubi from May 23 - June 22, 2017 in most countries around the world. In 1977, between his features The Streetwalker (1976) and Behind Convent Walls (1978), Walerian Borowczyk made The Greatest Love of All Time. This short documentary is, like several in his filmography, devoted to the work of another creator (see, for example, Atelier de Fernand Léger [1955] or Venus on the Half-Shell [1975]). In this case, the subject is Ljuba Popovic (1934-2016), a Serbian painter interested in fantastical and erotic themes, highly influenced by Surrealism and Baroque art. In 1963, Popovic moved to Paris where he worked most of his life. Although Borowczyk himself refused the distinction between shorts and features, and likewise between live-action and animation, The Greatest Love of All Time has not been discussed nearly as much...

With Alien: Covenant – a movie about the evolution of species – Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise evolves (or devolves, depending on opinion) into a different cinematic beast. What was once a deep-space containment nightmare becomes overblown God-complex commentary. Xenomorph origins are no longer a mystery, style flaunts open-world access and tension has given way to gory, grip-your-seat action. As we hurdle closer to the truth, Scott distances himself further from Sigourney Weaver’s masterclass in isolated, fear-of-the-dark survival horror. This might be a bonus for some – adrenaline junkies who hate waiting for payoffs – but Alien: Covenant has more in common with Alien vs. Predator than anything else. Take that for what you will.
Aboard the colonization vessel Covenant hangs some 2,000 cryo-sleeping pioneers. Walter (Michael Fassbender), a Weyland automaton, is running routine maintenance when a solar flare causes extensive damage to the ship. He’s forced to wake the emergency crew earlier than expected,...

So Alien: Covenant. What was that all about then? Spoiler alert, as we delve into some of its lingering questions...
Nb: This article contains copious Prometheus and Alien: Covenant spoilers.
If you've seen Alien: Covenant, then you'll know by now that it's a very different beast from its predecessor, Prometheus. Where the last Alien prequel was as stately as an ocean-going liner, Covenant moves about like an out-of-control racing car. Once all the atmosphere-building's out of the way and the latest ship full of explorers lands on the ironically-named planet, Paradise, things go wrong with breathtaking speed.
In essence, it's the story of humans - led by the resourceful Daniels (Katherine Waterstone) - versus the crazed synthetic scientist David (Michael Fassbender, with his accents) and an army of ghoulish monsters. There's copious blood, teeth and ooze, and more than a few lingering questions to address.
So with one final warning for spoilers,...

This is a little story of a little town that shifted from stoking fear to promoting creativity.
A few days before Christmas 1949, one of the Catholic elementary schools in Auburn, a small town nestled in Central New York state, encouraged children to bring their comic books from home and burn them in a school bonfire. The fear was that reading comics promoting juvenile delinquency. In fact, the school’s principal would even write a positive letter about the burning that was published in the local paper, The Auburn Citizen. This was before those misguided efforts really gained steam, culminating in the 1954 Senate Subcommittee Hearings on Juvenile Delinquency, focusing on comic books.
But a lot has happened since then. The region gave birth to one of the first-generation comic shops. Several more would follow, and recently the town just enjoyed its first comic convention.
And to celebrate the annual Will Eisner Week,...

"The Furniture" is our weekly series on Production Design. Here's Daniel Walber...
Florence's beloved Verdi sports her sensible chapeau.
Florence Foster Jenkins was a woman of grand exuberance. She’s mostly remembered for her terrible voice, which I suppose is fair. It’s worth noting, however, that she didn’t exactly intend to make comedy albums. It was her irrepressible love of music that drove her to the stage, the recording studio and, by way of generations of blithe dinner parties, into the 21st century.
With that in mind, a Meryl Streep movie seems like an inevitable conclusion. Florence Foster Jenkins’s director (Stephen Frears) and screenwriter (Nicholas Martin) clearly understand both pieces of the character, her fervent fandom and her wobbly voice. In fact, they so thoroughly embrace her passion for music that they suggest it’s what killed her.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before Streep...

It’s the year that New York caught up to Europe when it comes to radical interpretations of the classics. On stage in 2016, there was Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female “The Taming of the Shrew,” set at a Trump-produced beauty pageant; Ivo van Hove’s “The Crucible,” set in a classroom; and at the Met, Mariusz Trelinski’s “Tristan und Isolde,” set on a warship. No surprise, all those directors are European, and, for better or worse, their names tended to dominate reviews of the respective productions. Shakespeare, Miller, and Wagner are only writers, after all. Sam Gold, an American, joins this hip-directors foray.

What was Prometheus all about? What can we expect from Alien: Covenant? Ryan looks at the series' inspirations to build up a theory...
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Prometheus, and possible spoiler-filled conjecture for Alien: Covenant.
See related Joseph Kosinski on Tron 3 and The Black Hole remake
On one level, Prometheus was everything you might have expected from an Alien movie: a space slasher film where a bunch of explorers are pursued and physically invaded by something slippery from beyond the stars. Yet Ridley Scott's Alien prequel also seemed to have lots more on its mind: aliens fiddling with the building blocks of life, meditations on what lies beyond the curtain of death, and copious dollops of silky black goo.
Prometheus toyed with weighty themes, yet left plenty of specifics frustratingly obscure. What happened on the planetoid Lv-223 that led all those Engineers to die in a heap?...

With potential spoilers, a new report suggests that a character from Prometheus is set to return in Alien: Covenant...

See related DC Comics movies: upcoming UK release dates calendar Batman V Superman: where does it leave the Justice League? Why cinema needs Batman: the world’s greatest detective Zack Snyder interview: Batman V Superman Deborah Snyder & Charles Roven interview: Man Of Steel
There were lots of things in Ridley Scott's Prometheus that left us scratching our heads. Not least, why cast an actor of Guy Pearce's vintage, only to cover him in latex for the role of the wizened Peter Weyland? The answer, we later found out, was because Pearce was originally going to have a scene or two where he played a much younger version of the billionaire corporate boss, but these were ultimately dropped.

Rumors about Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi Alien prequel/Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant have been hitting hard over the past week or so, and now there's a new one that might raise eyebrows of Alien fans out there. Possible spoilers ahead, so turn back now if you don't want to know.
Avp Galaxy, the same site that brought us the recent information about the names of the new xenomorphs, apparently has access to someone inside the film's production who has revealed the opening scene of the movie to them. And as if that weren't enough, it includes the surprising return of a character I thought we wouldn't be seeing in this franchise anymore: Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland.
We have learnt that Guy Pearce will be reprising his role as a slightly younger Peter Weyland during the film’s opening scenes. The current edit of Alien: Covenant begins with David...
