"We're always going to want, in some level, that experience of us sitting in that movie theater." The Film Collaborative has revealed a second trailer for the documentary about cinemas called Only in Theaters. It's set to open in theaters (of course!) later this month. Only in Theaters is an intimate doc film about the Laemmle Theatres, the beloved 84-year-old arthouse cinema chain in Los Angeles, as they face seismic change and downward pressure. The family behind this multi-generational business – whose sole mission has been to support the art of film – is determined to see it survive. The doc features interviews with Ava DuVernay, James Ivory, Cameron Crowe, Mark Ulano, Leonard Maltin, and others. It has screened at many film festivals before its release this month. As much as I love cinemas, this doc looks a bit rough around the edges. It's clearly a pandemic project only opening now. I...

The nominees list for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been revealed before its June 6-10 balloting.
The candidates are hoping to fill the open seats on the 54-member board. Up to four candidates are set for the open seat at each each branch, which carries three governors with staggered terms per branch.
Board members who have termed out include Academy president David Rubin (from the casting directors branch), Jan Pascale (production designers), Mark Johnson (producers) and Nancy Utley (PR).
Candidates vying for a seat include actress Marlee Matlin, composer Hans Zimmer, and executive Toby Emmerich.
The slate faces some crucial tests once installed, including selecting a new Academy president and new CEO to replace outgoing Dawn Hudson. The Academy also must overcome perceptions created in a rocky year, with its Will Smith Oscars slap incident and the uproar over what categories would make it into the Oscars broadcast.

Update: Moviegoer interest in seeing Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood apparently wasn’t just among the public, who crowded theaters to bring in an impressive $40 million-plus weekend estimated box office haul and sold out shows in major markets, especially L.A. Oscar voters jumped on board, too.

Karol Urban has been elected president of the Cinema Audio Society, succeeding Mark Ulano, who has been termed out after four years. Urban, a veteran re-recording mixer, is only the second female president in the organization’s 55-year history, and the first since 2002.
The Cas, whose membership is 95% male, was founded in 1964 to advance the specialized field of cinematic sound recording and to achieve recognition for its members.
“I am so incredibly honored to have garnered the confidence of our esteemed members,” Urban said. “After years of serving under different presidents and managing the content for the Cas Quarterly, I have learned so much about the achievements, interests, talents and concerns of our membership. I am excited to be given this new platform to celebrate the achievements and herald new opportunities to serve this incredibly dynamic and talented community.”
Urban joined Cas in 2008 and began contributing articles for the Cas quarterly magazine.

When C.F. Martin & Co. lent a priceless, 140-year-old guitar to Quentin Tarantino's Hateful Eight, it was on the understanding that it would be returned unharmed. Seeing that the film's script involved Kurt Russell smashing the instrument in a fit of rage, the production came up with a skillful workaround: Between shots, they would swap the guitar out with one of six replicas made precisely for that purpose. Except that isn't quite what happened. As the film's sound mixer Mark Ulano recalled this week, "Somehow that didn’t get communicated to Kurt ... Kurt shattered the antique guitar and everyone was pretty freaked out," including Jennifer Jason Leigh, whose authentic look of shock apparently delighted Tarantino. Though those involved with the production swore Martin took the loss in stride, that was apparently because the company didn't quite understand just how the guitar got destroyed. After reading about Ulano's remarks on blogs like anyone else,...

The Martin Guitar Museum has vowed never to loan guitars to movies ever again, after a six-string from the 1870s was smashed to pieces on the set of The Hateful Eight.
If you’ve seen the film you may remember prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) strumming melancholically on the antique Martin in Minnie’s Haberdashery, only for John Ruth (Kurt Russell) to grab it from her and smash it on a beam.
“We were informed that it was an accident on set,” said Dick Boak, director of the museum. “We assumed that a scaffolding or something fell on it. We understand that things happen, but at the same time we can’t take this lightly.

Few directors this side of Joseph Mankiewicz are as attentive to the clear, crisp presentation of dialogue as Quentin Tarantino, giving the always important role of production sound mixer even more weight on his sets. Since Jackie Brown in 1997, Tarantino has relied on Academy Award winner (for Titanic) Mark Ulano to capture his production sound. Tarantino’s latest, The Hateful Eight, represents some of Ulano’s finest work to date – which is saying something considering that he has over a hundred credits to his name, including The Master, Iron Man and Inglourious Basterds (for which he was nominated for another Oscar).
