On paper, there were no major surprises at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards as all the winners were either considered clear front-runners or runners-up on most prediction lists. Still, the dominant showing for Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso probably qualifies as a surprise.
Emmys TV Review: NBC Plays It Too Safe With Lightweight Show
Given the mixed reaction to the second season, the long time that had passed since its run and co-creator/star Jason Sudeikis’ ongoing personal drama, it seemed like the momentum had shifted away from the hit comedy. Add to that that Ted Lasso won zero awards at the Creative Arts Emmys versus three last year, and lost out the bellwether Casting in a Comedy Series category there to Abbott Elementary, and it looked like the ABC freshman was primed for an upset; the last seven shows that won the Casting for a Comedy Series Emmy had...

The last time there were as many trombones in a movie as there are in “Take Me to the River: New Orleans,” Harold Hill was probably leading a parade. The ongoing vitalization of the Crescent City’s music culture really is like something out of a horn salesman’s fever dream, with younger generations readily taking up New Orleans’ traditional second-line culture in a way that can only make the aging elders of other regional music scenes green with envy. It’s this intergenerational mix, as well as the city’s world-famous melting pot of styles, that director Martin Shore means to celebrate in his latest documentary, the bulk of which consists of recording sessions he’s set up that foster collaborations between the old guard and new. The spirited end result suggests that New Orleans might be the one major city in America with no musical generation gap to speak of.

Snoop Dogg wasn’t even born yet when William Bell released “I Forgot to Be Your Lover” in 1968, but he managed to get in on it decades later for Take Me to the River, a documentary that brings the older musical legends of Memphis together with newer artists to re-record updated versions of songs like “Ain’t No Sunshine” and “Trying to Live My Life Without You.”
Take Me to the River director Martin Shore worked with Snoop before on 2006’s Hood of Horror so when the rapper found out Shore was working on this documentary, he immediately knew he wanted to be involved.

There's an earnest didacticism to Martin Shore's directorial debut, Take Me to the River, a film that initially comes off as a primer on the Memphis sound and a making-of documentary for a genre-blending music project.
Shore and his fellow music producers pair veteran r&b, soul and blues musicians with younger performers, primarily rappers (like narrator and singer Terrence Howard, most have a connection to the Memphis-set Hustle & Flow). It's not always smooth sailing, with musicians of the analog era gently chiding their digital counterparts over sampling and Auto-Tune. The cross-generational collaborations begin to click when musicians who found fame in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s recall the importance of mentors on their careers and demonstrate an eagerness to p...

Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett, Al Green, Box Tops, Carl Perkins, Big Bill Broonzy, Bobby Womack, Booker T. & The MGs. These soul artists created a body of work that to this day stands with distinction, so what better way to honor them than to team up some of those musicians with.....hip hop artists? That's the central premise of the upcoming documentary "Take Me To The River," that finds director Martin Shore chronicling the making of an album featuring veteran artists like Mavis Staples, Bobby Rush and Otis Clay, teaming with folks like Snoop Dogg, Lil' P-Nut and Yo Gotti. Uh...okay. "Take Me To The River" opens on September 12th, and if you need a little push to see it, the doc scored an Audience Award at SXSW this spring. Watch below. [EW]...

Detroit has Motown, but the Mississippi delta is where it all began. The gospel, folk, soul and R&B music that developed there evolved into modern pop and became the soundtrack for multiple generations of Americans; and the city of Memphis became this cultural oasis for all sorts of musical experiments and breakthroughs, exemplified by the heyday of Stax Records. In Take Me To the River, filmmaker Martin Shore paired old-school legends with current hip-hop artists for an album and a documentary about the timeless language of music that speaks across all generations and races.

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Ben Hibon, the man behind the animated sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, is about to make his feature film directorial debut with Pan. The film will be based on a script by Ben Magid and is a fantasy-thriller re-imagining on Peter Pan. The story follows Captain Hook, a haunted police detective, as he hunts down a childlike kidnapper. The film was originally set to have Guillermo del Toro direct for New Line, but that was a few years ago.
The project is now being backed by Social Capital Films and Energy Entertainment, with casting currently underway and shooting to star next fall in European locations. You might have seen director Ben Hibon’s work if you watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 this weekend (and based on the box office takings, it sounds like many of you did). He was the man responsible for the animated chunk of back-story about the Hallows themselves. Now he’s been handed the chance to direct Pan, a very different version of the Peter Pan story. This Pan is decidedly darker than the original Jm Barrie or Disney telling, with Captain Hook re-imagined as a troubled ex-police detective obsessed with tracking down a kidnapper who specialises in appealing to his victims’ trusting nature. Creepy.Ben Magid wrote the script, which was optioned by New Line back in 2006 as a likely project for Guillermo del Toro (can’t think why; it’s not as if Gdt has had any success at all with films featuring dark fantasy and “Pan” in the title…...

Ridley and Tony Scott Scott's Free Prods. is going back to its genre roots with "Tell-Tale", a modern-day reimagining of the Edgar Allan Poe classic "The Tell-Tale Heart" from director Michael Cuesta and screenwriter Dave Callaham.
" 'Tell-Tale' is a psychological thriller that sets Poe's haunting tale against the backdrop of modern science," Scott Free president Michael Costigan said.
Scott Free is the company behind "American Gangster", which bows Friday. The Scott brothers made their early name with "Alien" and "The Hunger".
The Poe-inspired film will be produced by Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Costigan as well as Social Capital's Christopher Tuffin and Martin Shore. Shore is a Santa Monica-based equity firm that was brought to Scott Free by indie film broker the Gordon Steel Co. Shore made his money in the real estate business, while Tuffin is a producer.
The film is budgeted at $20 million and will be shot in early 2008. Casting is under way.
Gordon Steel and partner John Baca suggested that the tone of the film likely will be a cross between "Jacob's Ladder" and "Marathon Man".
"Ridley and Tony are great storytellers.
