Netflix has unveiled nine new movies and series from Poland including the directorial debut of High Water writer Kasper Bajon and a thriller from the team behind Forgotten Love.
As the streamer continues to unveil international originals by the bucket load, Project UFO leads the Poland slate, a mini-series helmed by Bajon that will transport fans of stories inspired by real events to the 1980s in order to investigate the alleged UFO landing in a remote countryside village.
Bajon wrote the popular High Water series, one of the biggest to come from Netflix Poland, about the 1997 Central European flood and how it was managed by the authorities of the Polish city of Wrocław.

The Polish film industry is embracing variety and high-profile international collaborations, with a slew of new co-productions already generating buzz among buyers and festival programmers. “More and more established filmmakers, who used to look for collaborators in Romania or Hungary, are now coming to Poland — mostly because we are backed by concrete institutions and because there is money,” says producer Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska of Madants, heading to Berlinale’s European Film Market with “Ultima Thule” and Goran Stolevski’s “Housekeeping for Beginners.”
“Our crews speak English and work abroad. We are visible internationally,” she adds.
Madants is also behind James Napier Robertson’s upcoming Polish-Kiwi title “Joika,” one of six international co-productions backed by the Polish Film Institute in 2022. In order to make accurate predictions about the potential Cannes Film Festival lineup, it’s first important to explore which films definitely won’t make the cut. The glamorous French gathering is notorious for waiting until the last minute before locking in every slot for its Official Selection. That includes competition titles, out of competition titles, a small midnight section and the Un Certain Regard sidebar. Cannes announces the bulk of its selections in Paris on April 13, but until then, there are plenty of ways to make educated guesses. Much of the reporting surrounding the upcoming festival selection is simply lists of films expected to come out this year. Exclusive: 2012 Shooting Star joins Thor Klein’s feature; Solo Productions also sign on.
Jakub Gierszal, a Berlinale Shooting Star in 2012, has been cast to play Polish mathematician Stanislaw Ulam in Thor Klein’s Adventures Of A Mathematician.
In addition, the Canadian producer of Maudie – Mary Young Leckie’s Solo Productions – has boarded the project as co-producer with German producer Lena Vurma’s Dragonfly Films and Polish producer Joanna Szymanska’s Shipsboy.
The mostly English-language project, which has secured funding from the Polish-German Film Fund, is scheduled to start shooting in early 2018. It will be Klein’s second feature following 2013 science-themed mystery thriller Lost Place.
Gierszal is also starring in Agnieszka Holland’s Berlin competition title Spoor and has credits including 2016 Sundance hits The Lure and Morris From America.

Jakub Gierszal, a Berlinale Shooting Star in 2012, has been cast to play Polish mathematician Stanislaw Ulam in Thor Klein’s Adventures Of A Mathematician.
In addition, the Canadian producer of Maudie – Mary Young Leckie’s Solo Productions – has boarded the project as co-producer with German producer Lena Vurma’s Dragonfly Films and Polish producer Joanna Szymanska’s Shipsboy.
The mostly English-language project, which has secured funding from the Polish-German Film Fund, is scheduled to start shooting in early 2018. It will be Klein’s second feature following 2013 science-themed mystery thriller Lost Place.
Gierszal is also starring in Agnieszka Holland’s Berlin competition title Spoor and has credits including 2016 Sundance hits The Lure and Morris From America.

Janus Films has debuted an official Us trailer (red band for mermaid nudity) for a film titled The Lure, a wacky Polish indie about two mermaid girls who join a human band in Warsaw. Spending a good part of last year hitting nearly every corner of the festival circuit, those who delight in the off-beat and weird have been singing the praises of “The Lure.” Agnieszka Smoczynska‘s film is a cannibal mermaid musical, and if that three-word description doesn’t at least make you curious, I’m not sure what to tell you.

Imagine if Gaspar Noé and (the late) Andrzej Zulawski collaborated on a remake of “The Little Mermaid” and you’ll have a faint idea of what to expect from Agnieszka Smoczynska’s “The Lure,” a wonderfully demented new musical that bridges the gap between Hans Christian Andersen and Nine Inch Nails.
The fun begins in Communist-era Poland, where a mopey young musician named Mietek (Jakub Gierszal) stands by the waters of Warsaw and strums a folksy lament. If Mietek doesn’t seem all that surprised when two comely sea sirens pop their heads out of the surf and sing a reply (promising not to eat him, natch), perhaps that’s because he’s a little tipsy — given the strange energy that pumps through Smoczynska’s film from start to finish, it won’t be long before you know just how he feels.
Their names are Golden (Michalina Olszanska) and Silver...

100% original Polish mermaid musical, "The Lure" directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska in the Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Section is Agnieszka’s first film and is an accomplished, multi layered send-up of a pair of mermaid sisters.
More siren-like than the little mermaid we know and love, the film is reminiscent of Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid and Le Motte Fouque’s Ondine. Two mermaid sisters play out the dark and light side of the archetypical mythological creatures. Marta Mazurek plays Silver, the Ondine character who gives up her life for love of a mortal while Golden, played by the alluring Michalina Olszańska plays the dark side of the siren who devours men. Both play off each other in a beautiful and, at the same time, horrific way.
It will be interesting to see how they play together - again - in the upcoming Berlinale Panorama Opening Night Film, “I, Olga Hepnarova”. This Czech, Polish, French, Slovakian coproduction shows a young woman from what was then Czechoslovakia who has drifted into the restricted circumstances from which she tries to escape with a disastrous act of liberation. She is ultimately subjected to the death penalty which was in place there until 1989. (Btw, two other films make the death penalty their main topic at the Panorama: “Shepherds and Butchers” from South Africa and the Brazilian documentary “Curumim”.)
Kinga Prajs, Andrzej Konopka, and Jakub Gierszal also star and bring their own special qualities to the screen. Jakub Gierszal, the young hearthrob, was also in the Sundance Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award: U.S. Dramatic winner “Morris from America”, Wolfe Releasing’s “The Suicide Room” and the Polish pick for Oscar nomination in 2010 “All That I Love”.
All the characters have changeable personalities which shift through the various events of the story and which keep the audience just enough off-balance to perplex and beguile them.
In all, this is a very sexy, seductive quasi-comedy which does not hesitate to add a little Brian de Palma “Sisters” or David Cronenberg-esque “Crash” and “Dead Ringers” elements to make the horror more shocking-bizarre than shocking-scary.
Director Agnieszka Smoczynska said that the film was finished in September and they sent it to Sundance who responded immediately and asked that they not send it to any other festivals.
“It was life-changing.”
What was your inspiration?
Agnieszka Smoczynska: My mom ran such a restaurant as in the movie. I found a writer who said, ‘let’s make a film with musicians because his parents used to play music in such a restaurant where they danced during the Communist times. Growing up in such a place: is is too close, there’s too much drama, too much alcohol. Rather than make the stories so personal the writer said ‘let’s put on masks’, and so we made the mermaids. I loved mermaids. I knew of Homer’s mermaids, the sirens. It is a type of genre.
How did you make the film?
Agnieszka Smoczynska: The process of making the movie was interesting. We started with a treatment and worked with music, musicians and a choreographer to create the first draft.
Then we gave it to the sound designer and he wrote a sound script, like a score, and he put in music, some songs. Some went into the movie and some went out. Each character has their own song which creates a diverse array.
Dancing was also very specific in Poland and behind the Iron Curtain. There were very special shows, with a magician, music, acts, dancing. People came to the place every weekend. It was all very 80s.
The set design was also very 80s but there were modern elements and lots of my own memories of colors. Outside of the restaurants, there was no color. Everything was all very gray…until the 90s.
It was also important for us not to put too much politics. As a child I did not know about such things and so the mermaids do not know such things.
How did you fund the film?
Agnieszka Smoczynska: A good thing for Poland is that the Polish Film Institute gives almost 100% of the budget. 85 to 90% of the budget is given to first time filmmakers. Polish TV also shows the movies and there is guaranteed Polish distribution.
The story was so crazy that every producer said no one outside of Poland would understand it. Only National Company, a 60-year-old traditional studio believed in it because the head of the company likes dancing so much.
Agnieszka Smoczyńska is a graduate of the University of Silesia’s Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television in directing, the Wajda School, and the University of Wroclaw in culture studies. She received the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage Scholarship and won the My Talent for Poland program and Golden Pen award, granted by the President of Poland. Her short films “Kapelusz”, “3 Love”, and “Aria Diva” have won awards at film festivals around the world.

This is the most amazing, mouth dropping film I saw at Sundance this year.
Firstly, hats off to the programmers and the organization for finding and presenting this one. Sundance's docs and international features are usually superb but this one takes the cake.
We describe it - hold onto your hats now - as a lesbian vampire mermaid horror musical comedy. No kidding.
And it has a female director and 2 amazing female mermaid leads. More powerful woman filmmaking.
What's it about?? I dunno. Maybe don't ever mess with (or fall in love with) a mermaid even if she's a cute, nude and impossibly young. Your life is no longer yours then.
Takes place in a (very) shabby music hall type bar where the (um) 'girls' are put on display. Pour water on them and they grow 12 foot fish tails. Dry them off and they become 'normal' girls except for no normal female genitals, just smooth skin down there.
The musical numbers work very well.
I couldn't stop watching or laughing, amazed at how this rollicking weird story just keeps going.

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Sundance Institute has announced the 65 films selected for the Us Competition, World Competition and out-of-competition Next categories set to screen at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival (Jan 21-31) in Park City.

Wurst and sauerkraut appear to be served up with hip hop beats in Chad Hartigan’s sophomore film currently in the closing stages of production. Deadline confirms that breakout Sundance actress Carla Juri (Wetlands), funnyman Craig Robinson and newcomer teen Markees Christmas topline Morris from America. Lina Keller, Jakub Gierszal, Eva Löbau and Levin Henning co-star in the romantic drama being produced by Sara Murphy (Land Ho!), Adele Romanski (Black Rock), Martin Heisler and Gabriele Simon. Lichtblick Media Gmbh and Beachside Films are co-producing the pic with Michael B. Clark and Alex Turteltaub executive producing.

The European Film Academy’s (Efa) chairwoman Agnieszka Holland has spoken of a ¨crisis of content¨ in European cinema and called on the continent’s broadcasters to invest more in ambitious TV series.
Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily, the Polish director and Efa chair said: ¨The real crisis of European cinema is one of content.
¨We always have some good movies, but not enough. We have to make better ones, ones that are not just artistic and self-involved, but are searching for an audience.
¨Something which doesn’t help is the weakness of European television in terms of the production of ambitious TV series. We don’t have European stars, but nowadays they can be made by European television and that can be later reflected in the cinema.

Playing at the Museum of the Moving Image and the Quad Cinema in New York June 13-19 the Kino! Festival Of German Films returns for its 36th year. Once again, the festival continues to offer the best in German cinema produced in the last year. The program features documentaries and narratives that not only focus on the German experience but also on its filmmakers’ points of view on what happens around the world. Quality is always a given with Kino and these wide-ranging stories are no exception. Some revisit the country’s historical past, others travel to distant lands in search of images, and there are also those that feel specific to our time. Here are some highlights of what we've seen so far with some additions to come soon.

West
Dir. Christian Schwochow
In search of a more promising and free life for her and her son, Nelly Sneff (Jördis Triebel) a young East German chemist flees to the more modernized West side. Even though she speaks the same language and is as German as everyone else living in the communal living facilities for refugees, Nelly finds it difficult to adapt to the new system. Ironically, she comes to realize that she is seen as the enemy on this side of the wall. The constant questioning about the whereabouts and affiliation of her Soviet partner, who until now she believed dead, take a toll on her already complex life putting her in a state of paranoia. Her son Alexej (Tristan Göbel), who is bullied at school, befriends a neighbor, Hans ( Alexander Scheer) whose good intentions will put Nelly on the edge. Distrust is at the core of Schwochow’s film that plays as thoughtful answer to films like “The Lives of Others” and “Barbara.” While those examples condemned the system enforced by the Stasi, in “West” the tables are flipped. Nelly feels unsafe, watched, and harassed in a land that was supposed to be against those practices. Triebel's intense performance escalates from hopeful to enraged in a marvelously directed story about an unexamined subject within German history.
Nan Goldin : I Remember Your Face

In a concisely executed documentary that runs just over 60 minutes, director Sabine Lidl manages to capture the essence of renowned photographer Nal Goldin. Given that her friendships are the inspiration and subjects for her work, the filmmaker follows the eccentric artist as she visits old friends and reminisces about their youth, her failed attempts at seducing attractive gay men, and their role in her career. Her photos are raw and vivid. They shine with colorful nuances that only intimacy can provide. Drunk, naked, and unique people experience sadness and joy in front of her camera. Goldin’s extravagant collections and her turbulent past with drugs and alcohol also make an appearance in this short portrait of a fascinating woman across her beloved Berlin and other European cities.
Art War

While shot by a German filmmaker, the film is very similar to the Academy Awards-nominated film “The Square.” It follows the revolutionary youth of Egypt in the aftermath of the Arab Spring that brought down the Mubarak regime. While the aforementioned film tries to depict a holistic picture of the events, the deaths, and the shaky political processes that followed, Wilms decides to focus on the artistic expression that emerged from the movement. Including politically charged rap songs, and more extensively graffiti, the documentary advocates for the youth’s effort to protests by peaceful means. However, it also points at the non-stop attacks by Islamist conservative groups like the Muslim Brotherhood. Among their many undertakings, the art on Mohamed Mahmoud Street near the iconic Tahrir Square is of particular importance because it is dedicated to those who lost their lives in the carnage. Young Egyptians turned martyrs are immortalized on the city’s walls as constant reminder of an incessant struggle. There are clearly a great number of similarities between the two films, and though this is less achieved in scope, it can definitely work as a complementary piece.
Finsterworld

With a multi-story concept that scrutinizes modern German society, the tonally eclectic “Finsterworld” provides some vexed assumptions about the country’s history of violence. A high school class is taking a fieldtrip to a concentration camp, Dominik (Leonard Scheicher) and his unofficial girlfriend Natalie (Carla Juri) are enjoying the day despite having to deal with obnoxious spoiled kid Maximilian (Jakub Gierszal). Meanwhile Franziska (Sandra Hüller), an pretentious aspiring filmmaker wants to capture something profound, inevitably her egocentric personality crashes with her loving boyfriend police officer Tom (Ronald Zehrfeld), who is also a closeted “furry.” Then there is Claude (Michael Maertens), a lonely masseur specialized in feet, and his friendship with elderly woman Frau (Margit Carstensen). Lastly, there are the Sandbergs (Corinna Harfouch &Bernhard Schütz), a wealthy couple on the road who encounter a difficult situation. Touching on the subject of German identity having Hitler as only representative figure and being a nation defined by guilt, Finsterwalder’s feature is heavily provocative. It’s strange tone that shifts between absurd comedy and gruesome violence can come across as uncomfortable or even offensive, but there are a handful of brilliant moments that make the film rather compelling.

Guilt and indecision narrate a story of two young Polish students trying to come to terms with their own escalating problems in Lasting (Nieulotne), the latest film from Jacek Borcuch (All That I Love). Rural Russian film takes top prize at Poland’s New Horizons International Film Festival.
Russian director Alexander Fedorchenko’s Celestial Wives of the Meadow Mari received the Grand Prix and a €20,000 ($27,000) cash prize at the 13th New Horizons International Film Festival (July 18-28) in Wroclaw.
The decision by the International jury, headed by Hungary’s Bela Tarr and including Polish film-maker Joanna Kos-Krauze and Berlinale Forum director Christoph Terhechte, was announced ahead of the Polish premiere of Malgorzata Szumowska’s In The Name Of on Saturday evening.
Fedorchenko’s film had its world premiere at last year’s Rome Film Festival.

Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its original purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.

Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

There is an intoxication that comes with a chance encounter or fated meeting, and, while the allure still exists, the feeling of closeness can be overwhelming. International cinema has recounted such tales recently to various extremes, from Mia Hansen-Løve’s Goodbye First Love, emphasizing the romance, to Tribeca Film Festival entry brilliantlove, which was later retitled The Orgasm Diaries, evidently emphasizing the physical passion. Park City's Medical Services is giving out hand sanitizer right and left and advising everyone to wash hands frequently, avoid kissing contact, eat well, and get enough sleep. Peter will probably not make it to Sundance at all; his flu is not contagious but he is extremely tired. Since we have to be ready to go to an even colder Berlin five days after returning from Sundance, he's laying low. After returning home last night at 2:30 am, I wanted to sleep in and to forego seeing the 9:30 am screening of the Cambodian film A River Changes Course. But I was up at 7:00 am rearing to go. The family and Harlan were talking in the kitchen and I joined in and the time passed as we discussed the movies we had both seen – Harlan of Talk Cinema talked of May in the Summer, unique because the American sisters were Jordanian America with Haim Abbas their Jordanian mother and Michael Poland their American father. Their visit to Jordan for the marriage of one of the sisters was the notable element which took the film out of the realm of "typical Sundance family dramas". Their frolicking in the Dead Sea when a jet flies overhead and everyone freezes momentarily in anticipation of what might happen was the only reference to Israel's proximity. Word is that the film is mixed, some light touches and some heavy handed moments. The fourth opening night film (Who is Dayani Cristal? And Crystal Fairy are the two I saw and wrote about yesterday) Twenty Feet from Stardom was the best by far. About the lives of backup singers to Michael Jackson, Bruce Springstein, Bette Midler, Joe Cocker and the Rolling Stones, this film was already snapped up for U.S. Distribution of Radius, The Weinstein Company's genre arm and is an audience favorite.
As we talked on about our families, my plan to attend Fallen CIty and Soldate Jeannette, two films in the Contemprary World Cinema section, went unseen. However, in the long run, staying in was helpful for my health and I was so tired that I cancelled my dinner but went into town anyway to get a ticket for tomorrow's film Inequality for All in the New Frontier section. Christine Vachon's Kill Your Darlings was sold out so I couldn't get it for tomorrow. Getting the tickets and getting on the wrong tram to go to Main Street for the Documentary Reception hosted by AFI and Ida and the Sundance Channel Reception put them out of reach, and so much the better as I was still too exhausted to mix with people. Instead, I hung out a while at the Yarrow with Kathleen Dunn, the Palm Springs publicist who is here with a Peruvian short and the Italian French co-production There Will Come a Day whose star Jasmine Trinca was too tired to show up at the planned media event. Sorry I missed seeing her so this is all I can write about the film. Clay Epstein, the international sales guy from Arclight was there too and we made a plan for dinner after my two or three evening screenings. Andrew Mer from Snagfilms was also hanging a round and we all spoke together about our names, pronounced LevIne with a hard I, Epstine with a hard I (both of us hear our names pronounced with a hard e most often) and Andrew also commented on his name pronounced like mur or mer.
Off I went to see Lasting by the Polish director Jacek Burcuch and produced by Piotr Kobus of Mañana Productions whom I had met in November at the American Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland. He loves Spanish (this film is set in Spain where two Polish students are working and fall deeply in love) and plans to make his next films in Latin America. The stars Jakub Gierszal and Magdalena Berus are beautiful on the screen; he is especially magnetic. One to watch and see more of. Afterward I went to see God Loves Uganda which I could barely sit through. It made me sick to see the self-righteous evangelistic American preacher and his so-certain-of-herself wife preaching the evil of homosexuality with such charisma, certainty and articulation that even the legislative body was taken in to enact laws to execute anyone guilty of homosexuality or lesbianism The clergy that speaks out against such anti-human measures are expelled from the church. Church and state work hand-in-hand in cleansing their country of homosexuality which they credit with bringing down the world. It as so nauseating to watch and hear that I left after the first 20 minutes. Speaking about it later, I was reminded that Uganda had been the home of the madman ruler Idi Amin as well. Is there something in the Ugandan personality that welcomes insane extreme dictators to suppress the people's natural development? They all seem rational, organized, attractive and intelligent. No insight is given into this.
The subject was so stressful that I decided to forego the next stressful film After Tiller, about the aftermath of the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in 2009 to today's only four doctors in the country who provide third trimester abortions. Another brutal abrogation of human rights in which extreme male establishment (and church) mix in with the human right to own one's own body. Too much for my tired self. And so I also forewent the pleasure of seeing the Mexican film Halley and opted for dinner with Clay. We ate in a good Mexican restaurant next to the Holiday Village Theaters instead speaking of the courses we teach about the international film business, figuring a way to combine efforts to create something really exceptional. You will hear more on that soon I hope! Clay and I parted at the bus stop and will meet tomorrow for the Creative Coalition Luncheon on Education and the Favorite Educators of certain stars. On the bus to my car, I sat with Ula and we made plans to meet for tomorrow's breakfast hosted by Woodstock Film Festival. I plan to meet and interview filmmakers from We Are What We Are, the feature remake of the Mexican film and to see Inequality for All, a film about the widening income inequality and the effects it has on our economy and democracy. The docs this years are all quite issue oriented, less focussed on the odd individual or odd family sagas that seem more fictional than real. And the fiction films themes seem to run into cross-cultural issues more as the world becomes more internationalized. See you tomorrow!

For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, representing 32 countries and 51 first-time filmmakers, including 27 in competition. These films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), including 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.
In addition, the Festival presents feature-length films in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, New Frontier, Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections. Those announcements, as well as selections for the Short Film section, are forthcoming.
On Day One, January 17, 2013, the Festival will screen one narrative film and one documentary from both the U.S. and World Cinema competitions, as well as one shorts program.
A selection of films from the 2013 Festival will also be presented at the second Sundance London film and music festival, April 25-28 at The O2.

For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, representing 32 countries and 51 first-time filmmakers, including 27 in competition. These films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), including 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.
In addition, the Festival presents feature-length films in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, New Frontier, Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections. Those announcements, as well as selections for the Short Film section, are forthcoming.
On Day One, January 17, 2013, the Festival will screen one narrative film and one documentary from both the U.S. and World Cinema competitions, as well as one shorts program.
A selection of films from the 2013 Festival will also be presented at the second Sundance London film and music festival, April 25-28 at The O2.

GeekTyrant will once again be excitedly attending the Sundance Film Festival in 2013! They've released their full line up of competition films for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary, as well as the out-of-competition Next <=> section.
It looks like there's a lot of great films for us, and anyone who is attending, to check out this year. I love going up to Sundance, it's always a great mix of different movies... some great, some good, some bad, and some that are completely awful. I'm always looking forward to seeing them though! There's kind of rush going in to watch a movie I hardly know anything about. It's a rare thing for me these days to be able to do that.

Sixteen films are set to compete in the dramatic category at next year's Sundance Film Festival in January, with exactly half of those films directed by women - a new record for the festival which will be in its 29th year.
Approximately 113 feature-length films representing 32 countries were selected for Sundance for next year including 27 films in competition and 51 films from first-time directors. Many of the key categories were announced today.
While the Utah-based film festival only occasionally showcases films that have true mainstream crossover potential, this year sees more audience friendly fare in competition even it is still specifically targeting the art house crowd.
The fest in January this year was dominated by the rave reviews for its Grand Jury Prize winner "Beasts of the Southern Wild" which, upon moving to a more mainstream release, scored many accolades but just $13 million in worldwide box-office.

While the Utah-based film festival only occasionally showcases films that have true mainstream crossover potential, this year sees more audience friendly fare in competition even it is still specifically targeting the art house crowd.
The fest in January this year was dominated by the rave reviews for its Grand Jury Prize winner "Beasts of the Southern Wild" which, upon moving to a more mainstream release, scored many accolades but just $13 million in worldwide box-office.

If you ever managed to see Shane Carruth‘s Primer, you’re probably a very confused person. That’s to say, the 2004 time-travel flick strove to be as realistic as possible, and by realistic, we mean completely mind-boggling. Saying that, Primer remains one of the most intriguing movies of the past decade (even if we still can’t figure it out), which means that the promise of a second movie from writer/director Curruth is something to be excited about.
Though it was rumored that the poor guy couldn’t get funding sorted for a second feature, it appears he finally got it made: Upstream Color will premier at Sundance 2013, presumably to grant everybody another headache with a bizarre-sounding story about two people who become a single organism.

Mostly populated by unknowns filmakers (at least to us), among the dozen titles in Sundance’s World Dramatic Comp we do find some familair auteurs such as Sean Ellis’ (from Cashback fame) who returns with Metro Manila, we have Srdan Golubovic’s Circles (see still above – a drama we thought might end up playing in Cannes earlier this year) and finally, Sebastián Silva whose latest Crystal Fairy (not to be confused with Magic Magic which also stars Michael Cera) will open the fest. It’s one of the biggest festivals for independent films around the world, taking over Park City, Ut every January, to bring together some of the biggest and finest names in the independent filmmaking world.
The line-up has now been announced for the Us and World Competition categories, along with Next, giving us a great first look at what we have to look forward to in January – and, looking ahead, at some of the films that will be coming to Sundance London in April 2013.

The 2013 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 17-27 and today the fest unveiled their competition slates including film in the Dramatic, Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, Word Cinema Documentary and Next competitions. As always, these lineups are incredibly hard to predict, but amid this group there are a few interesting titles. The Dramatic competition includes Jill Soloway's Afternoon Delight, a dark comedy starring Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor and Jane Lynch that centers on a L.A. housewife who hires a stripper as a live-in nanny. I had not heard of David Lowery's Ain't Them Bodies Saints, but a cast that includes Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Nate Parker and Keith Carradine is immediately appealing, while the plot compares itself to Terrence Malick's Badlands and Bonnie & Clyde telling a story of Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie, two young outlaws who are brought down by the authorities in the hills of Texas.

The Myth Of The American Sleepover (15)

As low-key as it is low-budget, this is a thing of beauty. The plot is basically Dazed And Confused relocated to Michigan: high-schoolers (including a flirt with the hots for a pool-cleaner and a drop-out pining for the girl of his dreams) make the most of one last hurrah. But the film's mood is all its own, characterised by an elegiac score, easygoing performances and gorgeous cinematography.

There's something nasty in the recording studio. A sound engineer supplies the effects for an Italian horror movie, but the creepiness doesn't stay confined to the screen for long.

With filmmakers from Iraq, Bolivia, India and out of all places, Greenland, it's no wonder that many of the filmmaker names selected in Sundance's 2010 edition World Cinema Dramatic Competition are drawing a blank stare. Among those that we do know we find Taika Waititi returning to the festival (after the little seen charmer Eagle vs. Shark) with a set in the 80's pic called Boy, and David Michod will be coming to the festival as the scribe for Hesher, and as the the writer-director of Animal Kingdom starring Guy Pearce. - With filmmakers from Iraq, Bolivia, India and out of all places, Greenland, it's no wonder that many of the filmmaker names selected in Sundance's 2010 edition World Cinema Dramatic Competition are drawing a blank stare.
