Lourdes Portillo, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker and activist whose films such as “The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo” and “The Devil Never Sleeps” helped elevate Mexican and LGBTQ stories in the global cinema ecosystem, has died at the age of 80, IndieWire has confirmed.
Born in Mexico in 1943, Portillo moved to America with her family as a teenager and began making films at 21 years old. She made her directorial debut with 1979’s “After the Earthquake,” a short film that focused on the experiences of a Nicaraguan refugee building a new life in San Francisco. Over the next four decades, she went on to establish herself as one of global cinema’s most prominent advocates for the Chicano movement and LGBTQ rights, using her documentary and narrative films to highlight the perspectives of marginalized people.

As part of “The Eras Tour,” Taylor Swift has promised to play a different acoustic song during each show. At the tour’s kick-off on March 17th in Glendale, Arizona, she performed “mirrorball” from folklore and “Tim McGraw” from her self-titled debut album. The following night, she treated fans to “this is me trying” from folklore and “State of Grace” from Red.
During the first night of her show in Las Vegas, Swift dusted off “Our Song” from her self-titled debut album and performed the Midnights track “Snow on the Beach” live for the first time. On night two, she brought out Marcus Mumford for the live debut of “cowboy like me,” and played “White Horse” from Fearless.
On the first of three nights in Arlington, Texas, Swift treated fans to only the third live performance of Red’s “Sad Beautiful Tragic,” and first since 2013. For the second surprise song of the night,...

In the summer of 2019, many Taylor Swift fans weren’t sure what to expect from her new music. Her first single of the year, “Me!,” had been so bubbly and over-the-top — so totally the opposite of Reputation — that fans were divided between excitement for a shimmery pop return, and confusion about what they were in for. Songs like “Lover” and a teaser of “The Archer” — one a country-tinged love song, the other a spare, synth-y slice of self-reflection — were so diverse in sound that they continued to raise questions. It...

During each night of his solo acoustic tour, John Mayer switches up the setlist. This past weekend during a show in Sacramento, California, the singer and songwriter reached back a decade and performed “Paper Doll” from his 2013 album Paradise Valley. Reflecting on the record’s tone, which has long been rumored to have been written about Taylor Swift, Mayer expressed some regrets about how the song was received.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is out with his 2021 Spotify playlist, in the spirit of other political figures who’ve taken to releasing their end-of-year favorites.
Blinken’s choices actually are two lists — one an “at home” compilation of American artists, the other an “on the road” selection inspired by places he’s visited over the past year.
The “at home” list — which you can see here — includes 17 choices, including Olivia Rodrigo’s “Traitor,” Taylor Swift’s “State of Grace,” Jon Batiste’s “Freedom,” Chris Stapleton’s “You Should Probably Leave” and “Leave the Door Open” from Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak and Silk Sonic, as well as “Holy” from Justin Bieber, featuring Chance the Rapper.
The “on the road list” — available here — includes three dozen selections.

First things first: Let’s skip to the ending. The long-lost 10-minute original version of “All Too Well” turns out to be even better than we were all hoping. Taylor Swift takes her own masterpiece, tears it all up, breaks it like a promise, shreds her tapestry, and rebuilds it into a new heartbreak epic, twice as long and twice as mad. Yes, you just heard Taylor sing the words “fuck the patriarchy.” Yes, you just heard extra verses about this guy meeting her dad and skipping her 21st birthday party.

Taylor Swift is set to release her sixth studio album, Reputation, on Friday, Nov. 10. And, regardless of your thoughts on the 27-year-old, she’s always had a way with words.
Which is why for months (years, arguably), die-hard fans, gossip lovers and even the media have been anxious to get a true glimpse into Swift’s life over the past three years.
Taylor Swift Drops Heartfelt New Single 'Call It What You Want' -- Listen!
The Grammy-winning artist has always let the music do the talking – it’s one of her greatest strengths. Heck, when she released 1989, she included packs of Polaroid photos in each hard copy – with a handwritten lyric from the album printed on each one. And we’re confident that this album will be no different. We’ve learned so much from the songs she’s already released -- not to mention the caption she left on an Instagram post on Aug. 25 after announcing the album:...

This year's Atx Television Festival lineup has just gotten even more awesome: The cast of "The West Wing" is one of several new additions now set for a reunion at the event.
Atx Fest announced its updated lineup on Thursday, and the most exciting name is easily "The West Wing," NBC's political drama that ran for seven seasons and racked up multiple Emmy wins (and stole viewers' hearts) from 1999 to 2006. Creator and original showrunner Aaron Sorkin is set to appear, as are the following cast members: Bradley Whitford (Josh), Dule Hill (Charlie), Joshua Malina (Will), Richard Schiff (Toby), and Janel Moloney (Donna).
More actors are expected to join the panel (after all, you can't call it a proper "West Wing" reunion without President Bartlett and C.J. Cregg, a.k.a. Martin Sheen and Allison Janney), which also includes director Thomas Schlamme. The participants will gather in honor of the...

Robin Wright is having a moment. The Golden Globe-winning House of Cards actress graces Vanity Fair's April cover, and in the magazine's profile, she speaks candidly about her ex-husband Sean Penn and her on-again fiancé, actor Ben Foster. Wright met Penn on the set of the 1990 movie State of Grace, and they got married in 1996. It was the second marriage for both, as Wright was briefly married to the late actor Dane Witherspoon in 1986 and Penn was briefly married to Madonna in 1985. "I was pregnant and ostensibly married at 24," she recalls. After getting married, Wright added Penn's surname and raised their children, Dylan Penn, now 23, and Hopper Jack Penn, now 21. "I [changed my...

Whether or not you agree with his recent comments in Playboy, there's no denying Gary Oldman is one of the great actors of our time.
Ever since breaking out in 1986's "Sid and Nancy" as the self-destructing Sex Pistol Sid Vicious, Oldman has transformed himself from one role to the next. A true chameleon, the actor changes his voice for every part and is nearly unrecognizable in films like "True Romance" (1993) and "The Contender" (2000). Despite his enormous influence among fellow actors, Oldman shuns the spotlight and has only once been nominated for an Oscar. Oldman turns in yet another stirring performance (despite limited screen time) in this summer's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".
From his famous ex-wife to his rejection from a prestigious drama school, here are 27 things you probably don't know about Gary Oldman.
1. Gary Oldman was born on March 21, 1958 in London, England to Kathleen Cheriton and Leonard Bertram Oldman.

We talk to Gary Oldman about his role in RoboCop, his thoughts on the original, politics, and refusing to play a villain in Batman Begins...
Gary Oldman: quite possibly the finest actor of his generation. A charismatic force of nature, capable of blazing through the screen as a central villain (like killer cop Norman Stansfield in Leon), or even in relatively small roles, like the bizarre Drexl Spivey in True Romance. Then there are the stunning character portrayals, like Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy, or Beethoven in Immortal Beloved, or the troubled Jackie Flannery in the little-seen but wonderful State Of Grace.
Typecast for a time, at least in Hollywood, as the go-to villain type - see Air Force One, The Fifth Element or Lost In Space to name three - Oldman has since, as he puts it, "turned the ship around", and...

The boys who break Taylor Swift's heart are not all that different from cats when you think about it. Charming, handsome, furry (we're looking at you, Jake Gyllenhaal), cunning, indignant ... you get the point. So it's no surprise Swift, mom to a kitty named Meredith, loves both. But it's her unabashed ability to turn said boys into hit songs that's sending her to Sunday's Grammy Awards, where the four-time nominee is hoping to add some more accolades to her name. Her album Red, in all its tear-stained, girl-power glory, is up for album of the year and best country album.

The year 1991 is the focus for our latest underappreciated films list, which includes dramas, thrillers, and a smattering of horror...
Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.
Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.
So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.
25. Deceived
You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.

Villains have always been and will always be some of the most fascinating and memorable characters in the world of genre film. Here we will take a look at the greatest villains of cinema from the 1990’s.
The criteria for this article is the same as in my previous articles Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s and Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1980’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct of indirect lethal threat. The villains can either be individuals or small groups that act as one unit.
The villains must be human or human in appearance. Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes of their respective films were excluded.
Brad Dourif as The Gemini Killer in The Exorcist III (William Peter Blatty, 1990): Veteran actor Dourif is intense and unforgettable as an executed murderer inhabiting someone else’s body in...

Taylor Swift appears to be taking her love life in a new direction. The "Never Ever Getting Back Together" singer is seemingly taking her lyrics to heart as she moves on from recent ex, Conor Kennedy, and enjoys the company of One Direction hottie Harry Styles. "I had to literally do a double-take," an onlooker tells People of finding Styles, 18, with Swift, 22, on the set of The X Factor Thursday morning. Styles was on hand to watch Swift rehearse the debut of "State of Grace," which she performed later that night on the Fox reality show."He was smiling at her while she rehearsed.

Superstar Taylor Swift took to "X Factor" on Thursday night for her first live TV performance of the new song "State of Grace," from her smash hit album "Red." Flanked by two giant video screens, Swift rocks a sensible, yet still fashionable, outfit with a cute little black hat and that ubiquitous red microphone as she leads her band (including some indispensable backing vocalists) through a somewhat subdued take on the guitar-driven song. Maybe it's all the constantly screaming fans, but the tune never sounds quite right in the live "X Factor" setting. Watch the performance here: It doesn't exactly sound...

The 'X Factor' host says her hubby is totally supportive of her new career, even if he can't make it to the live shows. Lamar Odom's basketball career may prevent him from watching Khloé Kardashian shine live on The X Factor — he has a game with the Los Angeles Clippers almost every Wednesday — but he makes sure to catch up later in the week, and he always has something to say. Of course not! "That's what husbands do," she said. HollywoodLifers, do You think Khloé is doing a good job as Mario Lopez's co-host? Taylor took the stage on the Fox hit to sing her new single and offer some advice for the contestants! Read on to find out what she had to say! Taylor Swift took center stage on The X Factor on Thursday, Nov. 16! Performing her new single, "State of Grace," Taylor looked great in a long-sleeve white blouse, with tight black pants and a black fedora -- with her signature red microphone. She totally owned the stage, crossing back and forth, bending down to shake the hands of her screaming fans! Even thought the Nov. 15 'X Factor' results show was somewhat predictable, Taylor Swift hit the stage and made up for the lackluster Top 10 reveal. Mario Lopez started off the show by kicking Lyric145 to the curb, to the surprise of... well, no one. Co-host Khloe Kardashian did her job and acted like she was upset for them, but we know better. Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez sadly passed away a long time ago and we sure as hell don't need her replaced. (Sorry!) Taylor Swift took the stage with "State of Grace" off her new album Red, and looked adorable as usual. I heard rumors she and One Direction hottie Harry Styles were flirting up a storm backstage. (I would have liked to see that instead.) Nevertheless, the two acts who sang for survival were Jennel Garcia and Paige Thomas. Jennel sang "The Reason" because for some reason (hah,...

"The X Factor" sent home two more acts on tonight's (Nov. 15) double elimination show.
Lyric145 were sent home first. The hip-hop group were panned Wednesday night by all the judges except mentor Simon Cowell for their rap version of Queen's "We Will Rock You," so their Diva Week exit isn't a huge surprise.
After naming those sent straight through to Top 10, two surprising acts remained: Jennel Garcia and Paige Thomas, both mentored by Demi Lovato.
After their sing-off, both L.A. Reid and Britney Spears voted out Jennel. Called on next, Simon refused to answer until after he heard Demi's vote. Mario Lopez, desperately tried to play enforcer and instead only made everyone squirm. Finally acknowledging that Simon's "the boss," he called on Demi, who voted for Paige to go. Simon then said his deciding vote for Jennel was a "relatively easy decision." (So why the delay tactics?)

Only 10 contestants remain on The X Factor, and while at least one of tonight's eliminations may create some buzz/debate, all viewers can agree on one thing:
Khloe Kardashian is an abysmal host. I say this without any biased based on her reality show or the exploits of her family. But solely on the fact that she has no personality on stage and can't seem to read her lines.
Let's move on to the eliminations, shall we?
Before Taylor Swift took to the stage for a rendition of "State of Grace," Lyric 145 quickly learned the bad news, with one member responding to it in odd fashion:

When news surfaced that Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy would "never ever" be getting back together, teenyboppers everywhere collectively shed a tear. Those tears may have fallen too soon, though, because Swift and Kennedy reportedly faked the breakup.
Swift and Kennedy are allegedly still together and broke up only to get his family off their backs.
“Taylor and Conor are pretending to everyone that they’ve split up, and so far they’ve done a really good job of convincing friends – and even the press – that it’s true,” a source told Showbiz Spy. “The lovers hatched the scheme because the Kennedys were putting huge pressure on Conor, saying he needs to concentrate on getting through high school and into a top college."
The Kennedys were also reportedly worried about Swift and Kennedy eloping, which the New York Post's Page Six hinted at back in August. "Things have become so...
