Written, directed and choreographed by Kazuaki Kiriya (Casshern). Goemon tells the story of Japanese folk legend Goemon Ishikawa, a Ninja/Samurai bandit who stole valuables from the rich and gave them to the poor.
Quick Plot Summary – The year is 1582. For the first time since the dawn of civilization, Japan has been united under a single leader. With Last Knights, Kazuaki Kiriya retells Japan's treasured story of loyalty, revenge and sacrifice, 47 Ronin. Moving the action away from his native country to a medieval European land, the masterless samurai of the true life story have become disavowed soldiers of an unfairly disgraced lord. Kiriya is right at home in the fantasy epic genre after helming 2004's Casshern and 2009's Goemon but this time the director has abandoned the digital backlots of his previous work to shoot on location in the Czech Republic. The film features Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman at the head of a cast of actors gathered from around the world. Before the film's opening in Japan, Kiriya attended the Foreign Correspondent Club to show his film and talk about its production....

Set in an age of honour and justice by the sword, Last Knights tells the story of Raiden (Owen) – a fallen warrior who must rise up against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge Bartok (Freeman), his dishonoured master. Think of the film as something akin to Seven Samurai but set in the middle ages and you’ll be somewhere close.
If I’m honest, I’m not the biggest fan of historical epics – give me a down and dirty, straight to DVD schlockfest over one any day. However when said historical epic the English language debut of famed Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya (Casshern, Goemon), I can’t help but put my prejudices aside.

About Last Knight: Kiriya’s Culture Club Reimagining of the Feudal System
It’s unclear for who or for what reason Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya decided to undertake his English language debut, Last Knights, a convoluted pseudo-revenge flick that plays like some very watered down version of the classic 47 Ronin mythos but reconstituted within a parallel universe’s sci-fi inspired Crusades tale. A gig is a gig, so we can’t blame the poo poo platter of multicultural actors portraying peoples we’re supposed to believe all resided in the same place (not to mention, fought for the same cause), each with varying degrees of accented and/or broken English. Incredibly flaccid and late staged action sequences following a baffling revenge plot don’t help matters, except maybe to say that even if the world had known an age of such incredible diversity we still wouldn’t be able to all just get along.

Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen star in Japanese photographer-turned-filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya's "Last Knights," which centers on a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor. Owen plays Raiden, a hero who rises up with his men on a mission of revenge for their dishonored master, played by Freeman, and take on a corrupt ruler in Aksel Hennie. It's a project that's actually been sitting around for a few years (it was initially announced, and shot in 2012). Director Kiriya's last 2 films - "Goemon" (based on a Japanese folk legend that echoes the story of Robin Hood) and...

Game of Thrones might be one of the most popular medieval-esque epics ever, as it counts the likes of Diana Rigg, Charles Dance, Natalie Dormer, and Peter Dinklage among its cast. But does it have Morgan Freeman? No? Well, Last Knights does, so you should watch it instead.
Last Knights features Morgan Freeman as…someone with a very deep and pleasant voice, who may or may not be the antagonist. It also has Clive Owen brandishing a sword and looking very dark and grimy. The plot consists of a tale of a warrior (Owen) who leads a band to avenge their dishonored master. It looks somewhat like a medieval English version of a samurai flick, which makes sense when we realize that the director is Kazuaki Kiriya, who did Goemon, based on a Japanese folk legend that sounds a lot like Robin Hood.

Filmed a full two years ago, Last Knights has been inhabiting a misty limbo-land waiting for release. It seems it's finally emerging, blinking into the sunlight of 2015, however, and to prove it here's a trailer to show us what we've been missing while we watched Game Of Thrones instead. Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman are the stars, both upstaged by Freeman's moustache.Shot in and around Prague but set in a medieval fantasy-land, Last Knights is the story of Owen's Raiden, a swordsman employed by Freeman's dishonoured Lord Bartok to lead a band of warriors against corrupt ruler Gezza Mott (Headhunters' Aksel Hennie).Kazuaki Kiriya is the director, making his first film on actual sets and locations, following the entirely green-screen antics of Casshern and Goemon. Michael Konyves (Barney's Version) and Dove Sussman worked on the screenplay, and Last Knights gets an online and limited theatrical release in the Us...

Surely nothing could be wrong with the shot-over-two-years-ago "Last Nights," right? We can't fault the the casting —Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen are great when you give them something decent to work with. But that appears to be the problem with this medieval misfire, with the first trailer pointing towards a movie that perhaps everyone involved would hope stayed forgotten. Penned by Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version") and directed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya ("The Legend of Goemon"), the story follows Raiden and his band of honorable dudes who seek to avenge their master and give the baddie played by Aksel Hennie a hard time. It looks like your stand clanging-swords-raid-the-castle type deal, and you probably find more satisfying drama and action on "Game Of Thrones." "Last Knights" arrives in theaters and on demand on April 3rd. Watch below. [USA Today]...

As previously reported, Shun Oguri will play the lead role of Lupin. However, we have some casting changes. Tetsuji Tamayama (Casshern) will play the pistol- wielding Daisuke Jigen, while Gou Ayano (Rurouni Kenshin) is now playing the skilled swordsman Goemon Ishikawa. Thor: The Dark World's Hogun the Grim, actor Tadanobu Asano is playing Detective Kōichi Zenigata. At the time of our reporting last June, a number of actress were said to be vying for the role of Fujiko Mine but none of those names on the list secured the role. Instead, the seductive temptress will be played by Meisa Kuroki (Crow Zero II). Ryūhei Kitamura (Godzilla: Final Wars) is directing from a script written by Mataichirō Yamamoto (Crows Zero). Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman, both no strangers to bladed weapons in medieval settings, will headline a new action-adventure movie called “The Last Knights of Ako” for If Entertainment. The studio is currently selling the title over at the American Film Market. “The Last Knights of Ako” would star Owen and Freeman as “a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor.” Huh. Sounds a bit like a fantasy movie and less historical epic. We shall see, I guess. The film is currently targeting a November start on location in the Czech Republic. That is, if their foray at the Afm proves fruitful. If not, it would end up like most movies that didn’t sell — unmade. For now, though, the film will be directed by Kazuaki Kiriya, the visually stimulating director of 2004′s “Casshern” and 2009′s “Goemon”. I’m not his biggest fan,...

Well, here's a pairing of actors in a genre movie that we weren't expecting at all. And not only that, it's going to start shooting very soon... Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen are to set to star in "The Last Knights." Penned by Michael Konyves ("Barney's Version") the film will be directed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya ("The Legend of Goemon"), and tell the tale of "a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor." No word yet on their roles, but again, Freeman and Owen? Okay. Production is supposed to start later this month, so either this is an easy paycheck or some really good material or maybe just something in between. But yeah, we're indeed curious. Here's the interesting thing though: filming will take place in the Czech Republic. Why does that matter? Well, Robert Rodriguez has...

Everyone's going Mortal Kombat crazy now that the new Mortal Kombat web series has premiered, so I'm not surprised to see these Blu-ray releases timed accordingly. Paul Ws. Anderson's 1995 Mortal Kombat was fairly corny even back in 1995, but it was extremely popular and epitomizes a 90s tone with its reliance on practical FX and techno-heavy score. It's little brother, the sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation also hits Blu-ray along with an all new edition to the video game series.

African Cats – Samuel L. Jackson (Narration)
Deep Gold – Bebe Pham, Jaymee Ong, Michael Gleissner
Madea’s Big Happy Family – Tyler Perry, Loretta Devine, Bow Wow
Water for Elephants – Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz

The Stars: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
The Plot: A veterinary student (Pattinson) abandons his studies after his parents are killed and joins a traveling circus as their vet.
The Buzz: This period piece looks to be a well put together romantic drama. I enjoyed Pattinson’s general vibe in the trailer; thankfully a far cry from his brooding ham-bake of the Twilight films. Witherspoon is winsome, I typically love her in her more dramatic pieces — aside from the laborious Vanity Fair. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of on-screen magic this pair can conjure up. Takashi Miike, the director responsible for such uncompromising and unforgettable movies as Audition and Ichi The Killer indelibly stamps his trademark style on the Samurai genre with the ultra-violent, all-action, blood-spattered epic, 13 Assassins.

Director: Kazuaki Kiriya. Review: Dan King. The ambitious nature of ‘Casshern’, Kazuaki Kiriya’s debut feature, showed promise, with jaw-dropping visuals and groundbreaking CGI sequences, although this was to the detriment of the films narrative – a case of style of substance, not unexpected from a former fashion photographer and music video director. Goemon has the same stunning aesthetics, but this time Kiriya has much needed restraint from the source material. Having said that, the film is a fast-paced action adventure, with the best elements of the greatest swordplay epics, and the spirit of Goemon is far from ‘restrained’! The film follows the story of the eponymous hero, an explosive mix of Robin Hood, Spiderman and ninja bandit, whose quest for a life of ‘freedom’, stealing from the rich and sharing the wealth amongst the poor, inadvertently gets him wrapped up in the bloody politics of the country’s rulers, past and present.

Good news for fans of Kazuaki Kiriya. German distributor Splendid Film announced to release all films (yes, that’s two) from the Japanese director on Blu-ray Disc in Germany on May 28, 2010. While Kiriya’s 2004 debut Casshern will only come in a standard amaray, Splendid will release Goemon in a limited edition steelbook (without those garsty rating logo on the front) as well. All releases will include the original Japanese audio track, but as expected from Splendid, Casshern will only include German subtitles while Goemon is supposed to also have Dutch subtitle options.
So far there are no English subtitled Blu-ray Disc releases of these films available. Casshern has been released in Italy in 2008 and Goemon has already plundered Japan and France.

The biggest problem with Yōjirō Takita's Departures is probably how utterly predictable it is. After all, this is a film where the main character jumping (wrongly) to conclusions leads him to a life-changing epiphany he never expected, yet it's so ruthlessly put together nothing ever surprises. Nearly every pivotal moment is exactly what it seems.

Struggling to find a job outside the big city, Daigo comes across a tiny classified ad for help wanted - the wording's a little ambiguous, but it seems to be something to do with travelling. After all, this is a film where the main character jumping (wrongly) to conclusions leads him to a life-changing epiphany he never expected, yet it's so ruthlessly put together nothing ever surprises. Nearly every pivotal moment is exactly what it seems.
Masahiro Motoki (The Bird People In China) plays Daigo Kobayashi, a cellist for a small orchestra who's just moved back to his home town after being made redundant. Struggling to find a job outside the big city, Daigo comes across a tiny classified ad for help wanted - the wording's a little ambiguous, but it seems to be something to do with travelling. Holiday bookings, perhaps?...

Directors Kazuaki Kiriya and Gary Shore are sitting in a tree…K I S S I…but seriously, the first trailer for Shore’s The Cup of Tears could as well be a preview for a new film from the director of Casshern and Goemon. There’s little known about the film currently under production at the Irish One Punch Films studio, but if the full the full film will bring more overstylized samurai action and swordfights in outer space, I’m on board!
Update: Synopsis via Quiet Earth:
The narrative follows a scorned geisha who creates a magical cup made of tears that causes any man who drinks from it to fall under a stasis of permanent sleep. One night the cup is stolen, setting off a chain of events that threatens civil war amongst the clans. Taro, a once gifted samurai, and his companion Jin set out to...

For some time we’ve been waiting for some bright spark of a film buyer (in an English speaking country) to pick up the rights to “Casshern” director Kazuaki Kiriya’s latest eye candy of an opus, the martial arts, Ninja filled Goemon. So far….a big fat nothing. The movie has just aired at this years Sitges film festival so that could offer another opportunity for sales, but in the mean time we’ve been looking further afield for English subbed options, and Taiwan could just be the ticket. Goemon opens there on October 16th and fingers crossed we should be seeing a reasonably priced/quality DVD release to tide us over, until an English subtitled Blu-ray finally arrives. Synopsis: Goemon is a legendary master thief who roams at will throughout the chaotic world of the “Sengoku - Warring States” period. A hero to the populous, he steals from...

It is here, it is now, it’s at l’Etrange Festival, it’s the latest Kazuaki Kiriya movie.
Let’s weave a tale of succession, honor, valor, courteous love, and chivalry in the good old European terms. Let’s hear an epic tale, one where Robin Hood would avenge Arthur in a journey of high adventures while managing to catch a glimpse of Marian’s ankle while doing so. Let’s get that particular feeling of righteousness and good clearly in mind. Got it? You have that picture in your mind? Yes? Now add Ninjas to it.
The whole idea, associated with Kiriya's previous movie Casshern, left us panting and in dire need of sitting in the dark watching such incredible an tale while our retinas slowly get...

Av Watch reports today that Warner Home Entertainment Japan will release Kazuaki Kiriya’s CG overkill Goemon on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on October 9th 2009. Both releases will be available in a standard edition with one DVD/Bd and a limited “Ultimate Box” that includes an bonus DVD/Bd and a storyboard artbook in a nice golden box.
There’s no word of English subtitles and I wouldn’t hold my breath that they’ll be included. At least the German and French fans of Goemon can look forward as Splendid Film acquired the distribution rights for Germany during the European Film Market in February while TF1 Video will release Goemon on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in November. I guess Warner will take care of the rest of the world themselves, let’s hope this won’t take too long.

After the dismal debut of Bangkok Dangerous, the Pang Brothers have returned to China for their next film - The Storm Warriors. This is latest their exploration into martial arts - not that they haven't already featured martial arts in their films, but this is a period epic. For those who have forgotten who the Pang Brothers are, they're a directing team out of Hong Kong who brought us the original The Eye in 2002, The Messengers in 2007, a remake of their own film Bangkok Dangerous in 2008, and a handful of other Chinese features. And if you're hesitant about watching this trailer, don't be, it kicks some serious ass. This reminds me a bit of Kazuaki Kiriya's Goemon, but not as stylized as that. I'd love to check this out, I think it just looks like some badass martial arts fun, despite being from the Pang Brothers. Thoughts? Watch the...

- France-based Wild Bunch are the masters of their domain – we can forget about the horrible way Che fell victim to a bad market by remembering the success story of The Wrestler. They come to Cannes as usual with a ton of items in competition and a slate of films that gives buyers way too many options. I'll be checking out Cristian Mungiu's Tales From the Golden Age, Gabe Ibanez's Hierro, Looking for Eric by Ken Loach, the probably banned from filmmaking in China again director Lou Ye's Spring Fever, the already controversial (will it be ready on time?) Enter the Void by Gasper Noe and I will hope to fit in Marina De Van's thriller Don't Look Back and Un Certain Regard selected No One Knows About Persan Cats from Iranian filmmaker Bahmann Ghobadi. Wild Bunch also have some savoury titles in post production which I expect

Sweet eyecandy for Kazuaki Kiriya’s Goemon! The folks over at Japon : de l’art et du cochon got their hands on a promotion DVD for the film that opens in Japan May 1st.
They were even nice enough to post 32 screenshots from the included 10 minutes clip show. Sadly the resolution of the shots has been reduced but beggar can’t be choosers…at least until a Blu-ray disc release gets announced.

Late last year, we featured a crazy teaser trailer for a Japanese film called Goemon from visionary director Kazuaki Kiriya, of only a film called Casshern previously. Thanks again to Twitch, we've got the newest full-length Japanese trailer to feature today. I said previously that the first 30-second teaser was mind blowing, so you can imagine what my reaction will be to the full 138-second trailer. Unfortunately this is in Japanese, but you should still be able to enjoy the incredible visuals without understanding the dialogue. This just looks phenomenal in so many ways, and I really am anxious to see it as soon as possible! Watch the full Japanese trailer for Kazuaki Kiriya's Goemon: [flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/goemon-full-trailer-japanese-hq.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/goemon-full-trailer-japanese-hq.jpg 598 232] For more info, head to the official website for the film: goemonmovie.com Goemon is both written and directed by Japanese filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya, of only Casshern previously. I will be the first to admit that I do not know the first thing about how the cinemas work in Japan but there is something very intriguing about how they go about promoting films and setting up advance ticket sales. First off, promotion…
This weekend there will be a new poster for Kazuaki Kiriya’s next film Goemon. It will appear in Japanese cinemas. Admittedly this is not the best resolution and I am pressed for time this morning to get this news out to you before heading out to the day job but we have put through a request for a better image with a higher resolution and if we get a favorable response we’ll update right away.
And then there is the advance ticket sale. Again, my understanding of how the cinemas work in Japan is limited to non-existent but advance ticket sales are perceived to...

Here is the last trailer for Goemon, and while I'm excited with the of course breathtaking visuals, I'm hoping the storyline is better then Casshern.
In 1582 Oda Nobunaga was on the verge of conquering all of Japan, but was forced to commit suicide at Honno-ji Temple by one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Nobunaga’s top general, overthrew Akechi a few days later and completed Nobunaga’s dream of unifying Japan under one ruler. The world was at peace for a time, but soon a ninja bandit named Ishikawa Goemon (Yosuke Eguchi) appeared, using his super-human abilities to steal from the rich and give to the poor—a habit which cemented his reputation as a hero to commoners everywhere. One night while looting treasure from Nanban (Southern Barbarians), Goemon finds a mysterious box hidden inside a secret grave. A forgotten relic from the past containing untold powers, it...

Whoa! I don't really know what this is, but considering even I was blown away, I had to share it. Thanks to Twitch we've got the first teaser trailer for a Japanese film called Goemon. It comes from visionary filmmaker Kazuaki Kiriya, who a few may recognize from a 2004 film called Casshern. Kiriya uses some sort of beautiful combination of CGI and live-action stunt work to make a film that looks like a full length video game cinematic. Although this teaser trailer doesn't show much, I still really want to see it, as I'm just enjoying the hell out of his unique visual style. Definitely take a look at this today if you've got the time! A new teaser went up on the official site of Kiriya Kazuaki’s Goemen. This film is his long awaited follow up to his debut film Casshern. My computer is having issues with Flash tonight but according to Don over at Ryuganji the teaser has no footage but list the principal cast at breakneck speed. There are a lot of familiar faces in the cast from Casshern.
