Captain to the fridge

From the comforting opening credits and sounds, to the introduction of familiar friends, this is a fabulous introductory episode. The retro style, single story episode is a welcome return to a beloved format after recent departures and bodes well for this series which boasts a strong cast.

Very much enjoyed this and am looking forward to episode two.

Off to a good start
zachelkins-070615 May 2022
More complex dialogue, less swearing, a return to the principles that is what Trek is actually about. The show seems to be more character focused, with more rational people that are up to the standards someone that has gone through the academy.

This show feels like Trek so far. Hopefully they keep that up, and also hopefully the writing isn't just bait and switch to C rate writing. We shall see, but the first episode deserves some praise.

Definitely a well deserved return to the Star Trek theme we know.
CapStar3625 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
With the References to Star Trek: Enterprise, Discovery and the changing of General Order 1 to the "Prime Directive" that we "Trekkie's" have known for decades now.

I'm actually quite refreshed to see the return of Christopher Pike from Discovery and to see his "incident" of his future event is finally getting more to the story.

I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of this show.

Strong start for a Star Trek series
Johnny_Pappas5 May 2022
Strong start for a Star Trek series.. The show has everything that it takes to be a good Star Trek series: from an engaging cast to an episodic format that will not get bogged down with the type of storylines that have been in other modern Trek. The first episode was quite reminiscent of the original series as well as some of the other subsequent series.

This "feels" right. Finally.

There's likely a couple things that people more politically charged are going to get angry about, but by doing so, they're missing the point. This episode went as good as it possibly can for the first entry of a new series. It's absolutely the best episode of Trek I've seen in the last 20 years.

YES !!!!! Pike !!!
bononista5 May 2022
I've adored Jeffrey Hunt's Capt. Pike my entire life, and every iteration of Pike since. Anson Mount is brilliant in pretty much everything (he did not get enough credit for Black Bolt). I new I wanted this series while watching Discovery, but I didn't know that withing the first minute and forty-five seconds I'd be out-of-my-mind thrilled. THIS SERIES IS A MUST SEE FOR EVERY FAN OF TOS, TNG, and the Pike/Kirk era's. And Rebecca's #1 does full tribute to Majel. If Season 1 ends with Kirk being introduced to Pike and Spock I'll have a heart attack. PS: Bring on the Michelle Yeoh Section 31 Series *makes gimme hands*

Episode One...Hit It
A-Lost-Soul5 May 2022
Been waiting for Pike to take command of Enterprise in this timeline and he delivered in a cool manner. This shows offers so much diversity and opportunity, the writers must meet the challenge of boldly writing great voyages. The interpersonal relationships (conflict and bonding) I can already image. But I am really excited to see how the Prime Directive will "stick" in this series.

For the trekkers and trekkies, seems we are going to still be in business.

Star Trek has Returned! Finally
Stone-Author5 May 2022
This is a great opening episode. A true return to Star Trek, I hope it continues.

The single episode story is the way to go, and we are getting to know the crew and I like it.................. a lot.

There is only gripe, the brother of James T Kirk, Samuel Kirk Why? I am hoping that SNW will stay away from being Kirk heavy.

This is a perfect sci-fi show.
gigantoire5 May 2022
So this is a perfect show. I wasn't really looking forward to this, after the downward turn of Discovery. I was wrong, I was wrong!

Basically all the integrity of TNG with the explorers spirit of ToS. You might have to get over the fact things aren't exactly as you know them from the broken... disjointed timeline that has been cobbled together over a 50 year period in a way that was never intended. I did.

Watch it. Love it. Thank me later.

Back to Star Trek basics...GOOD!!
pepo-457935 May 2022
Yes...right where it should be. Back to the single episode story telling.

The characters are compelling and the actors earned their pay.

Lets see how it goes. I was well pleased.

Going downhill fast
thechez200417 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The series was off to a good start.but now I'm really starting to get fed up with the spock relationship storyline. This is extremely boring and is slow an laborious. The last episode no 6 was awful with a ridiculous storyline. Pike escaped with no real effort although it failed to show how. How did dozens of heavily armed pirates manage to arrive on the flagship of the fleet.

Needs to really up its game to keep my interest and get rid of the spock love story.

This is a solid start
What can i say, at the end of the episode i realised this was a very good episode, with great effects, a great intro, a great story, great costumes and what it is more important, this something which really looks like a good old fashioned Star Trek series.

I wonder how long until they screw it up.
ikata-494175 May 2022
The first episode is much better than I expected. Far superior to other recent shows called "Star Trek" but are really not. The first few minutes were slow and boring, but it did get better. I was distracted by the Buffy vampire makeup and I thought inserting genetic manipulation when all the "future" series use cosmetics to simulate alien appearance was lame. Changing established mechanics because you think you have a better idea is pretentious and arrogant. Still, it gave Nurse Chapel something to do so we could see Jess Bush's delightful performance. And Celia Rose Gooding as a young starry-eyed Uhura has promise. I'm not a fan of this version of Spock, but maybe he'll grow into the part. All things considered not a bad start for the new series; on par with Encounter at Farpoint I think. I wonder how long until they screw it up.

Every new Star Trek is avoiding default Vulcan's rules
hnsnn4 June 2022
Vulcans by default rules created in 1965 don't show (or have) emotions, they can't be in love, happy, sad, mad etc. But every new Star Trek series is removing/avoiding these rules more.

Wee see kissing of two Vulcans in 1st episode. Big mistake. Vulcans express love to another Vulcan by touching his fingers.

In 2nd episode we hear Vulcan laughing. Another big mistake. Vulcan can't smile, laugh or cry.

Awesome
eric_kosecki5 May 2022
This. This is what's been missing. This felt like Star Trek. Tough philosophical questions with no easy answers mixed with fun dialogue and scenes. Anson Mount continues to excel as Pike, and the rest of the cast is also wonderful.

I am really excited to see where we go from here.

This... is Star Trek!
rrtiverton5 May 2022
The pilot episode was phenomenal! It is better than TNG, better than Discovery, as good as or better than TOS!

The stage is set. The characters are plausible and feel... connected. Perhaps it's knowing 55 years of canon, of what Trek is... of what it was... SNW hit it out of the park.

I wish all Star Trek was like this.

Amazing first episode, hope it doesn't go the way of Picard
info-354-54955910 May 2022
I am holding my breath here, this episode was phenomenal it had everything we ever wanted from StarTrek without the garbage virtue-signaling everywhere, I mean we still have it but somehow it works well, here we can see the difference between good writing and acting and poorly delivered soap material.

I felt just as great about the first two episodes of Picard though and then it went to complete hell, so well see. I am holding my breath I really hope this goes well I really don't want StarTrek to ever die.

A solid start!
JabezGill6 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Casting nailed it so far - Anson Mount is the perfect Pike. Spock, Number 1, Ahura - and the rest of the bridge crew and science officers are really well cast.

Episode 1 was interesting - a little preachy but not in an overbearing way - the writing is MILES ahead of Discovery and Picard. Those shows - especially discovery - come across so hokey and insincere - this comes across genuine. Great CGI and sets.

Interesting that apart from Spock and Pike they entirety of the bridge crew is female. The actresses are good though so it comes across pretty natural and not forced... it's just played as "this is the crew and the people that ended up in these positions" as opposed to the "girl power!" thing that companies like paramount and Disney seem to be super fond of lately.

I think - even if the scripts end up being average on this series - that the cast they have will elevate the material.

Episode 1 was interesting - I think it's a great way to set up what to expect from the "strange new worlds" theme.

[8.8] Strange New Worlds
jimmyishere-377485 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I've been waiting for this show quality since Star Trek Discovery went woke around Season 2. It feels amazing seeing familiar faces starring once again.

The plot is interesting; a proper way of demonstrating an exploratory ship unlike STD. Surprisingly animation and acting were drastically improved. I loved those sunset shots in the beginning.

Despite the episode lacked in action and had a few weird parts, I really loved it. And for that reason, I will give it an 8.8. Looking for to seeing what Star Trek is all about!

"Why is it always an alley?"
wetmars14 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
NOW, THIS. IS. STAR TREK. I have been waiting for Modern Trek to do something like this. That Trek feel. I had enough with the "dark future" BS, Star Trek is supposed to be utopian, about exploration, and follow the vision of Gene Roddenberry. The intro is better than ENT, and man. The look of the Enterprise is at its best. Of course, this takes place after the Pilot Episode of TOS and intersects with DIS as we had a reference. I will be honest, but I haven't watched TOS for a long time. I recently re-watched the iconic Tribbles episode which I had a blast with.

Although, for me. I had a few problems with this one. It was slow and kinda dull throughout the first and second acts. I'm pretty sure that some of us have a problem with 50-minute episodes, but it's not always a problem. The other problem I have is that the never-seen crew wasn't introduced, that's what ST always does. Although, I haven't seen Short Trips nor Prodigy. I have no intentions of doing so. It's probably harsh I know. But, for me. I know it can be silly to judge an animated show "negatively" because of the animation, but the animation is nowhere interesting. For Prodigy, I'm not giving any attention to Nickelodeon. It surprises me it's still going. It's dry nowadays.

The episode has an interesting plotline of an alien race that hasn't reached warp technology but created a warp bomb. But, that's not the problem there. There is a conflict between the two on the planet on the verge of self-annihilation, and the representation is well done. The episode has great humor throughout the episode. I laughed the most when Pike "teleports" in a press conference and awkwardly says: "Hi..."

The episode hit the spotlight when he shows the press conference what would happen if their conflict continues, and it got me some Star Trek vibes. The time of 1965 - to 2002 Star Trek is where world peace became a thing in humanity. (( Sorry, not a big fan of ENT. )) The overall message of the representation is that we are heading in the wrong direction to great devastation, and it won't be pretty. It's sad. Well-expressed. Also about time. This is the first in ST that we actually got to see WWIII. The ending, it's simply beautiful. What a way to end a Pilot.

The characters we all know and love have great standouts with Anson Mount's Pike killing it! After all, it's a good start but has many flaws. This is way better than that ENT Episode - "Strange New World".

7-8/10.

Hit it
slak96u8 May 2022
Yeah, this is well done.

Star Trek has always been a socially aware series so... I fully expected to get hit over the head with the neo-left agenda going in to this. Not so much, I was surprised the episode skirts the middle for the most part. All that aside.

What an absolutely beautiful series, possibly the most cinematic series premiere I have ever seen. I mean holy cow, that production is absolutely off the charts. The special effects are top notch, cinematography is excellent, and lots of call backs with the music and sfx. It's a series premiere so the episode is heavy on exposition, when it comes to the dialog and writing, but that's all excusable. But the structure of the episode is a direct call back to the OG series and Next Generation, and that is the real brilliance of the episode.

My only worry is whether the production values, and the general momentum, can be maintained through a season. We shall see, I'm hoping it continues to be successful. I'm on board, looking forward to this one.

Solid but I'm waiting for the Kurtzman Effect
vsek10 May 2022
This was a solid start. But that's nothing new with Trek under these producers. The problem maybe comes in a couple of episodes.. but we'll see.

I think the introduction of these characters was good, also the overall style is a little more slick and better rendered. Sometimes it feels though, people are standing in front of a virtual production LED studio wall.

I could also do without the Vulcan stuff. The "bitchy girlfriend" part was inappropriate for Vulcans. Let's hope there's no more of that.

The comedy feels like CBS/Paramount wants to get the audience back that abandoned new Trek for the Orville. It's too obvious for my taste.

And of course, this is 2022, so there are a lot of strong opinionated women on the bridge.

Let's see where it goes and if the balance gets adjusted a little. And writers, please remember: it's sci-fi, not magic.

Was Expecting Better
mpetercale12 May 2022
I had hoped this series would be closer to the original. I'm glad that they seem to have cut back on some CGI, which made Picard and Discovery unwatchable for me. It was not promised, but I had hoped for the crew to be more like old Jim Kirk's crew, but it seems it was decided to give some of them that extra quirkiness. Why do we need that? Can't we just have normal, everyday Starfleet officers without attitude, shaved heads and ditziness. I just hope they don't go all heavily political and woke in this series with strong messages every episode, just so they don't offend anybody. Can't we just have Pike travelling the galaxy getting into binds with aliens, maybe encounter a few Tribbles along the way and have a little fun. Cut out all the political messaging. We get enough of that in our daily lives. I want fun and entertainment.

Best of the new Trek series hands down.
TheEmptyNoggin6 May 2022
Of all the recent series, this one has the feel of the older ones. It gets back to doing what Trek does best:

To explore strange new worlds To seek out new life And new civilizations To boldly go where no man has gone before

It's only the first episode, but I get the feeling it's going to be the best of the new Trek series hands down. The story is well-written, the acting is top-notch, and it's even got some decent humor. I'm looking forward to this five-year mission!
