The ongoing war in Gaza was high on the agenda at the awards ceremony of Cph:dox, Copenhagen’s international documentary film festival, with numerous filmmakers calling for a ceasefire in Gaza as they picked up their awards.
Opening the ceremony following a concert by the locally-based Middle East Peace Ensemble, artistic director Niklas Engstrøm told the crowd gathered in Copenhagen’s historic Kunsthal Charlottenborg, which is home to the fest throughout the 10-day event: “It felt right to start with this basic human message of hope and peace.”
On the theme of conflicts past and present, Italian director Alessandra Celesia picked up the top Dox:Award for “The Flats,” a powerful, timely and haunting film about a community living in the shadow of the pain and trauma of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Lyon, France – Continuing its devotion to heritage film in Germany, Studiocanal is bringing classic movies back into cinemas while also releasing newly restored DVD/Blu-ray collections of beloved titles.
The leading producer-distributor enjoyed a major hit this summer with the one-day re-release of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now: Final Cut,” which scored 12,000 admissions in 166 theaters across the country, boasting the highest per-screen average on Monday, July 15.
The special big-screen presentation drummed up plenty of publicity for Studiocanal’s Aug. 29 release of the film on Blu-ray, DVD and digital (including a limited 4K Uhd and Blu-ray Steelbook Edition), yet the film continues to play in selected theaters around the country.
Opportunities for classics in theatrical exhibition in Germany are growing, Torsten Radeck, Studiocanal’s head of home entertainment marketing in Germany, tells Variety.

In the fall of 1886 the magician Georges Méliès was filming near the Place de l’Opera when his camera jammed for a few fateful moments. Those missing frames resulted in an unexpected optical illusion that for Méliès was a new kind of a magic trick; “I suddenly saw a Madeleine-Bastille omnibus change into a hearse and men into women.”
Embracing that happy accident, Méliès established himself as the foremost fantasy filmmaker of his generation – it could be said that he was responsible for the multitude of special effect extravaganzas occupying multiplexes to this day. But let’s not judge him too harshly.

The source novel for Alfred Hitchcock’s classic horror film The Birds is to be adapted again for TV by the BBC...
Don’t they ever stop migrating?
The Birds first landed in Cornwall, England, in Daphne du Maurier’s original 1952 book, and Alfred Hitchcock let them loose in Bodega Bay, California, when he made the book into one of his greatest horror films in 1963. Now, the BBC is bringing them back to rural Cornwall for an upcoming contemporary TV drama. The adaptation is likely to be more faithful to the book, rather than be a direct remake of the film.
The Birds will be written by Irish playwright and writer Conor McPherson, who adapted the novella as a stage play in 2009. McPherson also wrote the films The Eclipse and The Actors.
It'll be produced by Heyday Television, the joint venture of feature producer David Heyman (Harry Potter,...

Chicago – Nothing jars an audience quite like the sudden appearance of a fearsome apparition in a dimly lit room. Even hokey thrillers like William Castle’s “House on Haunted Hill” still manage to make viewers jump from their seats by using this reliable horror standby. “The Woman in Black” has one such moment, but it is surrounded by a murky sea of grim tedium.
This is a sleepy little haunted house picture that proves to be the worst possible post-“Potter” role for Daniel Radcliffe, who was straining to distance himself from the boy wizard even while completing the phenomenally successful franchise. His stage work has given him ample opportunities to take bold risks. His singing and dancing in Broadway’s “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” raised nearly as many eyebrows as his nude scene in London’s “Equus” revival. Yet his screen roles outside of Hogwarts...

Irish actor Ciaran Hinds reunites with his “Harry Potter” co-star Daniel Radcliffe for next year’s eerie film, “The Woman in Black.” After fighting against the Dark Lord Voldemort together in the last installment of the “Potter” franchise, the pair teams up to defeat an even more obscure, more frightening being. A teaser for the film was released sans Hinds, who played Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus Dumblodore’s brother in the Harry Potter films. The film is Radcliffe’s first project upon the completion of the Jk Rowling story-based films. The movie centers on a lawyer named Arthur Kipps, played by Radcliffe, who is sent to deal with the legal matters of a mysterious woman who has recently passed away. While handling her affairs, the man begins to experience unexplainably frightening events and a potential haunting in the home of the late owner. The trailer features the cliché voice over of...

The filmmaker has announced that he already has Ciaran Hinds pegged for Northern Irish drama 'Sisters' while Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton is firmly in his sights. The movie is being billed as "Dead Poet's Society" meets "Sister Act" according to the Hollywood Reporter. "Sisters" is set in the 1960s, in West Belfast. Liam Neeson’s latest action movie, Unknown will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 21 from Warner Home Video.
The thriller has a good premise: Neeson (The A-Team) goes to Berlin with his wife (January Jones, Pirate Radio) to give a science presentation, but when he wakes up in a hospital after a car accident, he discovers his identity has been stolen by another man (Aidan Quinn, The Eclipse), and even his wife is in on it. Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds) plays an ally for Neeson and Frank Langella (All Good Things) is his usual calm bad guy.
Despite decent reviews, the PG-13 film wasn’t the run-away hit that Neeson’s Taken was in 2008, with $145 million. But Unknown, which is based on the novel by Didier van Cauwelaert, grossed a nice $61 million in theaters.
Warner says the DVD, priced at $28.98, will include just one special feature:
the featurette “Unknown: What Is Known?...

The Criterion Collection will release the 2009 comedy-drama film Life During Wartime by the always-provocative writer-director Todd Solondz (Welcome to the Dollhouse) on Blu-ray and DVD on July 26.
Ciarán Hinds reflects on a chance at happiness in Life During Wartime.
Exploring contemporary American existence and the nature of forgiveness, Life During Wartime functions as a distorted mirror image of Solondz’s acclaimed 1998 dark comedy movie Happiness, with its emotionally stunted characters now groping for the possibility of change in a post-9/11 world.
Happiness’s original New Jersey setting is transposed to sunny Florida, but the biggest twist is that new actors fill the roles originated in the earlier film—including Shirley Henderson (Topsy-Turvy), Allison Janney (American Beauty), and Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club) as alarmingly dissimilar sisters, and a haunting Ciarán Hinds (The Eclipse) as a reformed pedophile.
Decidedly for very specific tastes (like most of Solondz’s films), Life During Wartime...

Chicago – Some films never get a fair shot with audiences. They open in a handful of art house theaters scattered throughout the country before inconspicuously landing on DVD. Passionate movie lovers are left with the task of championing these unjustly obscure titles and helping them to acquire the audience they deserve. Before I reveal my picks for the top five films of 2010 that you probably didn’t see, here are the 10 runners-up.
“Agora”

The feisty, ever-questioning spirit of Carl Sagan is alive and well in Alejandro Amenabar’s fascinating and haunting historical epic. “Agora” functions as somewhat of an antithesis to “Passion of the Christ,” portraying the ancient ideological battles between Pagans and Christians with complexity, intelligence and a refusal to exploit its inherent violence. Rachel Weisz is at the peak of her radiance as Hypatia, a female scholar specializing in astronomy, philosophy and common sense.

What a strange cru 2010 was. We have been scrolling up and down various movie indices, reflecting on what we saw, comparing notes and wondering if we missed anything. If you consider that it takes about two years to make a movie, this year’s crop of movies was still on the drawing boards in that now-legendary year 2008—shall we chalk up this rather unimpressive slate to creative fatigue, then? As 2011 looms large we weighed in on a year that was and reveal our picks of the litter, in no particular order:
Saïdeh Pakravan - # 1 - ”Of Men and Gods,” by Xavier Beauvois - What true spirituality means for a handful of Cistercian monks in a remote Algerian village. At the other end of the spectrum of banal, feel-good fare. Plus, an admirable cast.
# 2 - “Crazy Heart,” by Scott Cooper - The Dude in top form, giving us a washed-up country singer.

Now this is some casting I'm very happy to report on. Heat Vision announces that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, the fresh new sequel being directed by Crank's Neveldine/Taylor, has gained a few great cast members. We already know that Nicolas Cage will be returning as the dark Marvel comics anti-hero, but in addition to him, Irish actor Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood, The Eclipse, Harry Potter) has joined as the devil (the villain in this; Peter Fonda played Mephistopheles in the first flick) and Italian actress-singer Violante Placido (The American) has joined as the mother of a boy who is also key in the plot. Read on! The story in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, originally written by David S. Goyer, sees Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to...

Nicolas Cage’s “Ghost Rider 2″ is throttling up with two major casting updates: Ciaran Hinds (left, “The Eclipse”) is currently in negotiations to play the Devil in the comic book sequel, while Italian actress/singer Violante Placido (most recently in the George Clooney thriller “The American”) will play the female lead. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” finds cursed Johnny Blaze (Cage) hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse, and no doubt doing it with utmost moodiness. His self-imposed exile is ruined when he’s recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son’s body on the boy’s birthday. Placido (below) would play the boy’s mother. “Crank” and “Gamer” boys Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor will direct from a script they wrote, based on a draft by comic book movie go-to guy David Goyer.

Chicago – I often find that the most interesting characters in a ghost story are not the ghosts themselves, but the humans who encounter them. Ghosts are reflections of a past we are unwilling to depart from, even if it halts us from entering the future. It’s a consolation for us to believe that our departed loved ones view us as their “unfinished business.”
Like “The Sixth Sense,” “The Eclipse” is primarily a human drama with occasional jolts of chilling horror. It centers on a character we’ve all seen before, the haunted widower grieving over his wife’s death, yet the filmmakers refuse to turn him into a cliché. He’s played by Ciarán Hinds, one of the finest and most underrated character actors in recent cinema, who’s popped up in everything from “There Will Be Blood” to “In Bruges,” and will soon be known to American audiences...

Aidan Quinn, 51, has been returning to Ireland all his life. Although he was born and raised in Chicago, the handsome Irish American actor with the steely blue eyes actually spent a good portion of his early life in Dublin and in Birr, Co. Offaly, located in the heart of the Irish midlands. Quinn was raised by his devoutly Catholic Irish parents, and in many ways it was a classic Irish American upbringing. His father was a professor of literature and his mother was a typical Irish homemaker (and a fellow bookworm, too). So Quinn’s intimate experience of Irish life and American life has helped him create remarkably insightful portraits of both Irish and Irish American men in films like "Michael Collins", "Songs for a Raggy Boy" and his recent star turn in playwright Conor McPherson’s "The Eclipse". But in "A Shine of Rainbows" Quinn tackles an entirely new kind of character -- Alec,...
