There was a time when West Indies cricket was the epitome of the game. The carefree and calypso style of fun-loving and unconventional but skilful approach to the game was a treat to watch.
The West Indians played to mesmerize and entertain the crowd without a care about the result. Genius was the word used by many of their players and it fit the bill perfectly especially for one of theirs, the greatest cricketer ever to play the game, Sir Garfield Sobers.
The Indian team touring the West Indies at present were privileged to shake the hands of the great man, one who could bat, bowl, field and even keep wickets at the highest level.
The word “Bazball” has now become a mantra for the England side in their quest to play attacking and attractive cricket. It takes one back to the famous 1961 Test series between Australia and the West Indies Down Under.

An acting titan, man of gargantuan appetites and island-owning maverick, it’ll take more than the umpteen tomes written about him to unmask the real Marlon Brando. Fortunately, there’s a new documentary to help with that. Listen To Me Marlon is a Brando-led trail that, via thus-far unheard audio tapes, leads the viewer through the mind of the great man. The film’s new trailer is online and viewable below.British director Stevan Riley, the man behind West Indies cricket doc Fire In Babylon and 007 history Everything Or Nothing, has used Brando’s own contemplations and utterances to construct a character study of one of Hollywood’s true enigmas. From his early breakthroughs in A Streetcar Named Desire, The Wild One and On The Waterfront to later years in self-imposed exile, the picture that will emerge is one of a restive, enquiring mind always searching for peace, but never finding it.

Exclusive: Documentary filmmaker Stevan Riley (Blue Blood, Fire In Babylon) got the chance of a lifetime when he was granted access to more than 200 hours of audio tapes Marlon Brando made during the course of his life, a personal archive of never-before-heard musings, acting studies, self-hypnosis and insights the enigmatic Oscar winner had hoped to turn into an autobiographical film before his death in 2004.
With the blessing of Brando’s estate and help from Searching For Sugar Man’s John Battsek (who produced alongside George Chignell and R.J. Cutler), Riley put Brando’s own intimate thoughts on Brando to film in Listen To Me Marlon, which premieres Saturday in competition at Sundance in the World Cinema Documentary program.

There’s a chance you may have caught Boyd Hicklin’s cricket comedy Knocked for Six at London Film Festival 2012 – where it went by the name of Save Your Legs. However now seems a far more appropriate time to indulge in this quirky piece, as we enter in to the cricket season (otherwise known as the Summer, over ‘ere), with a film that taps into that annual excitement amongst fans of the sport. A sport that, while mostly untouched in cinema, has shown that it can translate well onto the big screen, following on from the brilliant documentary Fire in Babylon.
Teddy Brown (Stephen Curry) lives and breathes cricket, spending the vast majority of his time focusing on being the president of the Abbotsford Anglers, where he plays alongside his two closest friends, Rick (Brendan Cowell) and Stavros (Damon Gameau) amongst others. His biggest dream, however, is to embark on...

Fire in Babylon
Written and directed by Stevan Riley
UK, 2010
Fire in Babylon is a 2010 British documentary covering the rise of the West Indies cricket team of the 1970s and 1980s, written and directed by Steven Riley. The film includes historic footage and interviews with the characters of the time, including Colin Croft, Joel Garner, Gordon Greenidge, Michael Holding, Clive Lloyd, and Viv Richards.
The documentary follows the ascension of West Indies cricket from the “Calypso Cricketers” team, due to their exciting but unsuccessful style of play, to a team that never strays far from the top of the cricket betting odds.
After briefly describing the history of cricket in the West Indies, the documentary picks up pace when it reaches the 1970s, with the West Indies still failing to turn a group of 11 players from different parts of the Caribbean into a united team. The appointment of Clive Lloyd...

Pick Of The Week
ParaNorman (DVD/Blu-ray)
In ParaNorman, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits. ParaNorman review

Summer sports cinema, Nationwide
Britain's "summer of sport" might really boil down to a "summer of watching sport" for most people, but why sit at home in front of the telly when you could sprint down to the cinema and watch it all communally? Britain's "summer of sport" might really boil down to a "summer of watching sport" for most people, but why sit at home in front of the telly when you could sprint down to the cinema and watch it all communally? Sports movies are having their moment right now, with dramas like Fast Girls, The Athlete, Town Of Runners and Personal Best all doing the rounds (not to mention the movies in the 2012 Festival). From the sublime Fire in Babylon to Mario Balotelli's ridiculous hat, what to put in people's stockings this year
DVD & Blu-ray
An absolutely bumper year for sport on film was dominated by two disciplines. Cricket gave us Fire In Babylon (all titles available at amazon.co.uk), a rousing account of the 1970s West Indies side, of their brilliant cricket and, importantly, its part in their assertion of pride amid the racial and post-colonial politics of the time.
Politics also sets the scene for From The Ashes, the gloom of Britain in 1981 providing a backdrop for an historic series. It's a gripping story, entertainingly told, but the real treats are the Australian contributions – amusing and enlightening. It doubles up with the The Ashes Series 2010-2011 Box Set, a mammoth celebration of an Aussie defeat that simply never gets old. The included two-disc documentary is also excellent.
Motor sport also provides some compulsive viewing.

Fire in Babylon and Storyville's Afghan Cricket Club take gongs at annual awards for excellence in documentary making
Two documentaries about cricket scooped prizes at the prestigious Grierson awards on the day the sport hit the headlines after three Pakistan players were found guilty of trying to rig a Test match.
The team behind BBC4's Storyville: Afghan Cricket Club – Out of the Ashes was judged best newcomer on Tuesday at the awards, which celebrate the best in documentary making.
Another winner, in the best historical documentary category, was Fire in Babylon, the theatrically released film about the rise to global dominance in the 1970s and 1980s of the West Indies cricket team.
The awards kicked off with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall winning the best documentary series prize for Channel 4 show Hugh's Fish Fight.

A pile of discarded fridges in Hackney was the inspiration for a pop-up cinema near the Olympic stadium that aims to give recycling a sporting chance
It is Britain's coolest new pop-up cinema and the only one inspired by a load of rubbish. Films on Fridges is the brainchild of 25-year-old American Lindsey Scannapieco and it is inspired by "Fridge Mountain", the 20ft high pile of discarded fridges that towered over the London district of Hackney until its removal in 2005. Films on Fridges is an outdoor venue where the screen is surrounded by fridges, the bar is made of fridge parts, and fridge doors are incorporated into the seating arrangements.
Scannapieco was researching east London while studying City Design at the Lse when she first heard about the dumped refrigerators. "Fridge Mountain seemed to be part of urban folklore," says Scannapieco. "Something which spoke to east London's industrial past at...

Ealing Studios Bicycle Tours
Among the many splendid things about Ealing comedies is the way they got outside and took in postwar London, so what better way to celebrate the Ealing spirit than hauling yourself on to a bike and doing the same? Coinciding with the Southbank's Vintage festival (see Events preview, p39), these guided tours (vintage bikes provided, vintage garb encouraged) visit the key locations of three Ealing classics – The Lavender Hill Mob, Hue & Cry and Passport To Pimlico – of which a surprising amount survives, from landmarks like the Bank of England and Westminster Bridge to south London back streets. And after a bracing pedal, you can round off your tour with a screening of the restored Lavender Hill Mob (starring Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway) at the BFI Southbank.
Jubilee Gardens, SE1, Fri to 31 Jul
Screen Arts Festival, Nationwide
Too highbrow for the multiplex and all those vulgar feature films?...

Go behind the scenes of Fire in Babylon, "astory of emancipation through the sport of cricket," featuring the charismatic men on the ever-dominant West Indies cricket team. Now available On Demand via Tribeca Film. Who knew that a nation born of a slave history and fraught with disenfranchisement would produce the most successful sporting team in history? Such is the story of the West Indian cricket team, which since the mid-'60s has played the seemingly placid game with unparalleled endurance and courageous spirit. Arguably, these former European colonies transformed cricket from a sluggish recreational sport into an intensely physical game for those with great athletic skill. Tribeca alum Stevan Riley (Blue Blood, Tff 2007) charts this yet-untold story from sporting history in his film Fire in Babylon, now available On Demand via Tribeca Film's VOD platform. The film garnered significant attention after its premiere at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival and...

The 14th annual Revelation Perth International Film Festival is, once again, packed to the gills with worldwide wonderful, weird and revelatory filmmaking. The fest runs this year on July 14-24.
The highlight of the festival is the once-in-a-lifetime live performance of Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then, which will be performed on July 17 at 7:15 p.m. American animator Brent Green will be traveling Down Under to provide the live musical score and narration for his emotional, live-action animated tale about undying love and creation. He will also be accompanied by band mates and foley artists, Mike McGinley, John Swartz, Donna K and Drew Henkles.
Some other films to look out for at the fest will be the Australian premiere of Zach Clark‘s terminally twisted Vacation!, a black comedy about four girls on a debauched weekend of drinking and drugging that ends horribly for all involved; Marie Losier’s acclaimed...

The film of Ayrton Senna's life shows he was answering not to a series of commercial opportunities but to a compulsion to race
Senna, the film, strikes with elegiac force and is not alone in modern cinema in augmenting memories that were already safe and deep. Lurching out of the dark, the viewer asks why the hot new genre of sports documentaries is so unsettling and effective.
One answer is that they return us to the pre-corporate age when sport was a means of expression and not a branch of business. When Ayrton Senna defends himself as a pure "racer", who drove against other men and their machines, rather than a scoreboard, or a clock, there is a subconscious pull to another time, before Formula One was a game of computer technology and industrialised product-shifting.
The moment in history we are all attempting to identify is when sport became...

It’s another jam-packed week of DVD and Blu-ray releases, here’s the rundown of what’s available to buy from today, June 6th 2011.
Gnomeo and Juliet (DVD/Blu-ray)
Set in the gardens of fair Verona Drive, we witness the blossoming romance of two young gnomes, Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt), amidst a turf war between the reds and the blues. Between the high-speed lawnmower chases and stealth missions, hearts (and hats) are broken, loyalties are tested and garden boundaries drawn, but can true gnomance conquer all? When your best friends are an over-excitable frog, a lovelorn flamingo, a loyal mushroom, a team of Bond-esque bunnies and a dopey fawn, there’s a shedload of fun and adventure around every plant pot! Review.
The Mechanic (DVD/Blu-ray)
Jason Statham is Arthur Bishop – The Mechanic – an elite assassin with a unique talent for eliminating targets with deadly skill and total emotional detachment.

There's a scene towards the end of Fire in Babylon when Bunny Wailer (of Bob Marley's band) stops berating his dogs and says of Viv Richards: "If he had not gone into cricket, he would surely have been a dreadlock rasta man. Real deal." It's a delightful moment that had the audience cracking up. But you couldn't help thinking how different things might have been if the Master Blaster had just sat around all day smoking big spliffs rather than flaying England's bowlers to all parts.

DVD & Blu-ray, 20th Century Fox
Movies are great at pitting one element against another, from Cowboys & Aliens to Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus. But there's no surprise who comes out on top in Danny Boyle's movie about Man v Rock. Rock wins, every time. Based on the story of outdoors man Aron Ralston, who had to sever his right arm to free himself from a boulder that was pinning him down, this is – as the title suggests – an account of the period during which Ralton's hopes of rescue and escape vanish and he's left with only one painful, inevitable option to get out alive. Actor James Franco has been tipped as one to watch for almost a dozen years since his breakthrough role in TV's Freaks And Geeks, and here he gets plenty of screen time to showcase his talent. But it's not quite a one-man (or even one-rock) show.

Have distributors given in? Rob Marshall-directed fourth in the franchise had blanket UK screenings, even at arthouse cinemas
The winner
Four years after Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End left British cinemagoers a little less than satisfied and a good deal confused, the question remained: just how big an appetite would there be for a fourth helping of Captain Jack Sparrow? The answer: a healthy one. On Stranger Tides debuted with an impressive £11.63m, including £3.07m in Wednesday and Thursday previews. That's the biggest opening of 2011 by a considerable margin, beating Paul (£5.52m), Thor (£5.45m) and Fast & Furious 5 (£5.33m).
Thanks to multiple screen occupancy at many sites, the new Pirates flick dominates the market to an incredible degree, with the weekend's number two title, Fast & Furious 5, grossing just 5% of Tides' tally. The Rob Marshall-directed sequel's dominance can be seen most evidently in the top 100 engagements chart, which...

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (12A)
(Rob Marshall, 2011, Us) Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Claflin. 137 mins
Ahoy! Aha! Ahem. The excitement of another rip-roaring high seas adventure dissipates almost before they set sail in this lightweight epic of action set-pieces and people trying to get stuff they want. Depp is business as usual and the presentation is classy, but the new blood brings little to this non-party, which feels less like a story than a succession of twists and swoops along well-established tracks – like a theme-park ride, in fact. Oh, hang on …
Win Win (15)
(Tom McCarthy, 2011, Us) Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale. 106 mins
Giamatti's hard-up lawyer inherits a whole heap of surrogate family issues, and a teen high-school wrestling ace, in a wry drama that doesn't really stray out of its suburban comfort zone.

Attack The Block (15)
(Joe Cornish, 2011, UK) John Boyega, Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker. 88 mins
More Critters than Cloverfield, this alien-invasion movie is modest in scale and ambition but makes up for it in local flavour. The setting is south London – Brit cinema's default "ghetto" location, bruv – where sharp-toothed ETs come to regret messing with the hoodies, who team up with their recent victim and the upstairs drug dealer to defend their manor. It's no Shaun Of The Dead, but it's up-to-date and fitfully entertaining, and there's at least some social grit beneath the down-with-the-kids comedy.
A Screaming Man (PG)
(Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, 2010, Cha/Fra/Bel) Youssouf Djaoro, Dioucounda Koma, Emile Abssolo M'Bo. 91 mins
Saying a great deal with few resources, this skillful Chadian drama finds weighty moral, global and generational concerns in the story of a swimming pool attendant and his son.
Love Like Poison (15)

This spring no less than three British-made sports documentaries get a cinematic release. Does this mark the start of a new relationship between sport and film?
Sport and cinema have been uneasy bedfellows over the years, their dual history mapped out by a series of rather awkward public conjoinings. Football has long been something close to a running joke on film, its high points restricted to the Brian Glover Pe teacher bits in Kes, the luminous pre-modern internationalism of Escape to Victory, and any action movie in which geezer-for-hire and former Wimbledon clogger Vinnie Jones takes a beating.
Perhaps sport and film stand apart as poles: an oil-and-water collision of the loud, the outdoor and the boisterous with the dimly lit, the indoor and the ruminative. That might be about to change. This month three British-made sporting documentaries have had a cinematic release. Two are cricket films: From the Ashes...

How I managed to come out alive after facing the feared West Indies fast bowlers in their heyday
Last winter, by chance, I found myself travelling to Australia with Viv Richards, who was on his way to do some "King and I"-type gigs with Rodney Hogg, the former Australian fast bowler. We've known each other a long time, Viv and I, but I'd never got round to asking him one particular question. So I did.
"If you had to choose four fast bowlers of your time with West Indies, which would they be?" He replied: "Well, I would have Malcolm. And I would have Andy. And I would have Mikey." He pondered a little longer. "And I would have Curtly." So there you have it, Viv Richards' dream attack: Malcolm Marshall, the slithering genius; Andy Roberts, cerebral, calculating, the Godfather of the modern West Indian pacemen; Michael Holding,...
