Exclusive: Writer-director-producer Judd Apatow has left UTA, ending one of the most tenured relationships with a major filmmaker and a major agency.
Apatow spent 30 years at the agency, 20 of them with David Kramer, and he remains managed by Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and lawyered by Ziffrin Brittenham. These long relationships often come to a close, usually when the client wants to shake things up at a moment when it is hard, particularly in the comedy space. It was amicable, and I hear he’ll be meeting with CAA and WME.
But this is a moment to tip the hat at how the agency helped Apatow build his brand, and how Apatow’s prolific successes were a major part of building UTA. There aren’t many tenured relationships that led to as much success as Apatow has had and how many careers he has launched in that time. That goes from...

The six Avengers that assembled to fight Loki’s invasion in the first Avengers film have become some of the most iconic characters of modern Hollywood. The actors who essayed the roles of the original six Avengers have become a big part of the MCU, and it is difficult to imagine anyone else taking up the mantle of the characters (despite one of them being recast between their solo film and The Avengers.)
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner in The Avengers
Mark Ruffalo took up the role of Bruce Banner, the mild-mannered scientist who transforms into the raging monster, The Hulk, who is a core member of the Avengers. The best pop stars make a mind-blowingly large amount of good music. For example, choosing just one Taylor Swift song as her signature is difficult. Despite that, audiences in the United States loved one of her songs above all else. Swift revealed that she’s particularly proud of that track for one reason.
1 Taylor Swift song was a huge artistic leap forward
If Swift is known for one thing, it’s honesty. While some songwriters captivate audiences with fiction, Swift’s songs draw from her personal experiences. She’s written about her ex-boyfriends, her friendships that didn’t work out, her experiences with the press, and her political views. However, she rarely gets self-critical. However, she made a huge artistic step forward with her synth-pop ballad “Anti-Hero.”
According to Billboard, Swift discussed her feelings about “Anti-Hero” on Instagram. “Track three, ‘Anti-Hero,’ is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written,...

Karen Pittman (The Morning Show) and The Wire alum Wood Harris are set as leads opposite Michael Cooper Jr. and Lovie Simone in Forever, Netflix’s upcoming drama series from Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane creator Mara Brock Akil.
A reimagining of Judy Blume’s influential — and controversial — 1975 novel Forever… for a new generation, the series adaptation tells the epic love story of two Black teens, Keisha Clark (Simone) and Justin Edwards (Cooper Jr.) exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts, set in Los Angeles, 2018.
Pittman plays Dawn, a college-educated, top executive in corporate finance with an easy elegance that belies her loving but paranoid form of parenting, Justin’s (Cooper Jr.) mother Dawn might be strict at times, but it’s always out of love. Keira Knightley Once Reflected On Harvey Weinstein Scandal & Revealed She Was Aware Of His Womanizing Character. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced film producer and convicted s*x offender, has misbehaved with many Hollywood celebs, including Jennifer Lawrence, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett, and more. When he was all over the news, many actresses were questioned about him, whether they were victims of his s*xual abuse. However, the Pirates of the Caribbean fame Keira Knightley once revealed that Weinstein never targeted her, and she knew that he was a womanizer.
Keira is known for her period dramas Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. She gained millions of fans after appearing as Elizabeth Swan alongside Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The franchise earned millions of dollars and made Depp one of the most prominent and highest-paid actors. After doing three films, Keira exited the franchise and returned briefly in the fifth installment.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.
Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

The ominous task that faced Eve Hewson when she first read John Carney’s script for Flora and Son had been accepted before she even realized it.
Sure, she knew Carney’s work, almost exclusively delivering features that baked music into the very fabric of their construction. She’d seen Glen Hansard belting at the top of his lungs in Carney’s debut, Once; Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo making sweet music together in Begin Again; Ferdia Walsh-Peelo embracing ’80s pop in Sing Street. Pat Monahan, appearing with his band Train on today’s episode of ABC’s The View, said the group is at work writing the music for a new stage adaptation of the 2013 musical-comedy film Begin Again that starred Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo.
The film was written and directed by John Carney, who wrote and directed the 2007 film Once and the 2016 film Sing Street. Both of those movies were later adapted as stage musicals.
Monahan provided no further details on the project, including whether anyone from the film version is involved in the stage adaptation.
The film version featured songs written by Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois, Nick Lashley, Rick Nowels, and Nick Southwood. The film’s stand-out song “Lost Stars,” performed by by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, was nominated for...

After earworm-filled musical dramas “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” “Flora and Son” marks a notable first for writer-director John Carney: it’s the first time he wrote a song for a film that’s designed to underwhelm. “I always thought, what would it be like if you started a song and you just didn’t get the response that you’re supposed to get in a musical?” Carney says about the central song in the AppleTV+ feature starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
“Flora and Son” tells the story of Dublin-based Flora (Hewson), a young single mom who is struggling with her life and especially her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). She digs a guitar out of the trash, but Max is not interested — he only wants to make music using Garage Band and his laptop. So Flora decides to learn to play, and finds washed-up songwriter Jeff (Gordon-Levitt) offering guitar lessons online,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Flora and Son, John Carney’s latest indie ode to music that stars Eve Hewson in a breakout role.
Written and directed by Carney, whose credits include the song-centered Once, Begin Again and Sing Street, the film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where Apple Original Films jumped on it, scoring one of the fest’s splashiest acquisitions after an all-night bidding war. It was Apple’s biggest deal in Park City since landing eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Coda in 2021.
Flora and Son hit theaters in late September before launching on Apple TV+.
Hewson, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, stars as a single mom in Dublin who looks to use a shared love of music to break through with her troubled teen son Max (Orén Kinlan), who is heading down the wrong side of the tracks.

As is true of all his films, “Flora and Son” started with writer-director John Carney mining from personal experience. “The big story for me was my mother, and I thought about my own relationship with music when I was young, dragging my mother around music shops. What did that feel like for her,” the filmmaker said in an exclusive clip that shows his artistic process both writing the film, and the original songs like “High Life” that are featured in it.
Although he is unique in the extent to which he composes the music for his own films, Carney begins work on a new project like most writer-directors do: he starts with the screenplay first. “Otherwise, it’s going to be like a jukebox musical where the script doesn’t matter and you’re just drawing the dots between songs,” Carney said to IndieWire over Zoom.

John Carney loves music. And he loves music in his movies. Oh, and he knows you love music in his movies. The Irish filmmaker saw his breakout film, “Once,” take the Original Song Oscar for “Falling Slowly,” “Begin Again,” earn a nomination for “Lost Stars,” and his fantastic period piece “Sing Street” robbed for a nom a few years later. Now, Carney is back with “Flora and Son,” which popped at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before landing in theaters and Apple TV+ this Summer.

Jessie Ware deserves to be a bigger star, and she knows it. “Sell out next time, Los Angeles,” the U.K. singer joked to the giddy, surprisingly multigenerational crowd at the Hollywood Palladium on Monday night, one of a few times during her hour-and-a-half-long set that she gently ribbed her audience.
No matter. The night felt like the best kind of secret party. Specifically, one taking place in an imaginary club called the Pearl circa 1979. Emerging in a billowing bright red kaftan that looked one part Donna Summer and one part Stevie Nicks, Ware leaned hard into the disco-funk of her most recent albums, 2020’s What’s Your Pleasure? and this year’s That! Feels Good!, and nodding only briefly to the elegantly restrained R&b and blue-eyed soul that she built her name on starting with 2012’s Devotion. Musicians often have a signature style, and for Irish writer-director-musician John Carney, it only makes sense that his films have one, as well.
Carney’s brand of musical drama usually tells a relatable story about the healing power of music, and his latest film for Apple TV+, Flora and Son, is no exception. As a child in Dublin, Ireland, Carney’s world was forever changed when he was gifted a guitar by his mother, and so he wanted to explore that idea with a single mom named Flora (Eve Hewson) and her troubled teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Flora’s secondhand gift of a guitar doesn’t impress Max in the way that she expected, but she eventually realizes through Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s online guitar teacher, Jeff, that she can still use the instrument to hopefully repair her broken family.

Plot: Flora (Eve Hewson) is a hard-partying young mother living in Dublin with her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). He’s a would-be delinquent constantly in trouble with the cops, while her ex (Jack Reynor) is a well-meaning but unreliable flake. When she finds a guitar in the trash, she decides, spur of the moment, to take online guitar lessons. Her teacher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) turns out to be kind-hearted and sympathetic, and soon she discovers that music could be a way that finally allows her to reach her son.

Fans of America’s most idiosyncratic director are in luck: Wes Anderson’s second film of the year is now just a few clicks away. It seems almost guaranteed to earn him an Oscar nomination, and it’s the movie on this list that’s likeliest to break through in any category.
The contender to watch this week: “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar“
Big-name directors could monopolize Best Live Action Short Film at next year’s Oscars, with Pedro Almodóvar and Wes Anderson having each made movies that clock in under 40 minutes. “Henry Sugar” is the first of four Roald Dahl adaptations Anderson has shepherded for Netflix, this one starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a wealthy 1930s gambler who finds a fantastical way to cheat. It’s dense, delightful, and arguably a more impactful distillation of Anderson’s style than his other 2023 movie, “Asteroid City.” Three other shorts, including “The Swan...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
One of the sad truths of the movie business as it exists is that great movies will sometimes slip through the cracks. A movie as good as "Booksmart" deserved a lot better than $25 million at the box office. Both "Blade Runner" and "The Thing" deserved better than getting trounced by "E.T." in 1982. Fortunately, cream tends to rise to the top over time, and good movies often find their audience eventually. Perhaps no movie released theatrically over the last decade deserved to find its audience more than director John Carney's "Sing Street."

Writer/director John Carney hits all the right notes with Flora and Son, a film that earns its spot nesting snuggly within Carney’s music-infused projects. Carney’s Once (2007) struck a chord with audiences and critics, capturing an Oscar for Best Song and a Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film. Begin Again (2014) strummed heartstrings while Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley made beautiful music together on screen, and Carney’s (2016) Sing Street earned an impressive 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes along with a spot on the National Board of Review’s top 10 independent film list.
Carney understands the power of music and how it can help heal deep, emotional wounds and bridge the gap between opposing forces. In Flora and Son, the titular characters are the opposing forces, and music transforms their relationship from dysfunctional to harmonious.

John Carney’s musical-comedy “Flora and Son,” which was acquired by Apple Original Films after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of the streamer’s multiple awards contenders this year, most notably for best original song.

"How come 'the way things are' are never enough for you?" Apple has revealed the first official trailer for Flora and Son, the latest musical experience from acclaimed Irish filmmaker John Carney. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, as a last minute addition, and ended up being one of my favorite films of the festival. I really fell for it. "Never underestimate a Dublin woman with a guitar." The charming musical comedy follows Flora, played by Eve Hewson (Bono's daughter) a single mom who is at war with her son, Max. Trying to find a hobby for Max, she rescues a guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person's trash can be a family's salvation. She also strikes up a virtual relationship with a musician, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who teaches her how to play the guitar. The small cast includes Orén Kinlan,...

When U.K. soul singer Jessie Ware reinvented herself as a disco diva for 2020’s euphoric What’s Your Pleasure?, it seemed like it might be a pandemic-induced passing fancy—like baking or Zoom happy hours. That! Feels Good!, though, doubles down on its predecessor’s mission statement, answering the titular query with an enthusiastic exclamation.
That! Feels Good! is horn-ier and, if possible, hornier, opening with a moan and a bass groove that leaves no doubt about where things are headed. “That feels good, do it again,” Ware croons on the title track. The album is more Disco than What’s Your Pleasure?, leaning into the campier strains of disco music, with only a couple of detours into post-disco terrain like “Beautiful People.”
What’s Your Pleasure? boasts a more sophisticated, diverse palette—including Italo, house, and funk—but its follow-up’s fluffier philosophy reflects Ware’s obvious elation...

Jessie Ware’s 2020 release What’s Your Pleasure was one of the early pandemic’s great revelations — a pop album that successfully brought the movement, yearning, and euphoria of the dance club into everyone’s homes. It was a perfect setting for the British singer and songwriter’s voice, luxurious and sophisticated but still highly accessible.
Ware’s follow-up to that achievement, titled That! Feels Good! in Shania Twain house punctuation style, zeroes in on the many pleasures of dance music. Bodies and bodily sensations are emphasized, while inhibitions are...

On an overcast afternoon in New York City, Jessie Ware is ready to close out a whirlwind 48-hour trip in the city. While having her lunch in a hotel room with huge windows overlooking the Lower East Side, she ticks off the growing list of things she will need to do in the month leading up to her album That! Feels! Good! being released: TikToks, more interviews, generally “promoting the shit out of the record.”
She’ll even find time to take her kids to Cyprus for an “inconvenient” but necessary vacation.
