So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”
The series from Lee Sung Jin premieres on April 6. See below for more titles coming to Netflix in April 2023.

Update, writethru: With an estimated 58.2 of the vote, Emmanuel Macron has been reelected as President of France, defeating extreme right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen who amassed 41.8. Macron now becomes the eighth French incumbent to win a second term.
Coming into today’s final round of the election, independent centrist Macron was leading in the polls, but throughout her campaign, Le Pen had gained momentum compared to the first time the two faced off in 2017. Today marked the second runoff between candidates from parties other than the traditional left and right.
Voter abstention today was estimated at 28.7, according to media reports. This is higher than in 2017, and is also more than the first round of voting two weeks ago. However, it is not a record breaker.

When it comes to being a distant relative of Britney Spears, Lance Bass had no idea it was gonna be him. The Nsync alum, 42, found out that he and Spears, 39, are sixth cousins once removed while investigating his family tree on a new episode of Ancestry's 2 Lies & a Leaf series. The revelation came after Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin, had to guess whether he was related to the "...Baby One More Time" singer, Faith Hill or Elvis Presley. "I really hope it's Britney, but there's no way," Bass remarked, before guessing Presley. Meanwhile, Turchin went with Spears as his guess, prompting Bass to say that it would be "too good to...

Madison Rose’s “Sunshine” is the sonic embodiment of strutting down a drag-show runway. It’s loud, unabashed, and bursting with optimism.
Aptly, the Los Angeles-based singer did her first-ever drag performance to celebrate its release at a beloved local dive, the Offbeat Bar, earlier this month.
In “Sunshine,” bright pop rushes forward with force, nodding to Daft Punk’s “One More Time” and only settling a bit to prep the kind of dance music drop that DJs use to wake up a club’s fading, after-midnight crowd. It’s...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Daft Punk, the widely celebrated and influential electronic duo, have broken up.
The group announced the decision via an eight-minute sequence, dubbed “Epilogue,” taken from their 2006 film, Electroma, in which two robots — meant to represent band members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter — venture into a desert where one gets blown up. An image of two robot hands forming a triangle then flashes on-screen with the time-stamp: 1993-2021.
Kathryn Frazier, Daft Punk’s longtime representative, confirmed the breakup to Rolling Stone but declined to provide any details on the split.

Roy Head, the rocker known for his 1965 smash “Treat Her Right,” died Monday at his home in Porter, Texas, family members reported. He was 79.
“Treat Her Right” reached No. 2 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&b chart in 1965; the rave-up was kept out of the top pop spot only by the Beatles’ “Yesterday.” The song was repopularized last year by Quentin Tarantino’s use of it for the credit sequence music in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” It was also featured in the 1991 film “The Commitments.”
Wood found renewed renown as the father of Sundance Head, the winner of season 11 of “The Voice.” The younger Head sang “Treat Her Right” as a duet with his coach, Blake Shelton, on an episode of the show in 2016.
Billy Gibbons of Zz Top paid tribute to Head as a “rock ’n’ soul phenomenon who had been one of our early and continuing inspirations.

So much of the slick, Add-riddled studio animation that passes for family-friendly entertainment these days has been watered down by cheap jokes and bland message-mongering. You have to hand it to “Trolls World Tour” for trying to turn that standard into a half-assed Trojan horse: Yes, this candy-colored jukebox musical sequel to the 2016 installment stuffs a ridiculous playlist into silly and psychedelic gags about hairy forest critters who thrive on joy and good tunes. And yes, it will mainly appeal to kids and stoners for those reasons alone. Yet buried in all that surface inanity, “Trolls World Tour” (which was set for a wide theatrical release but will instead snake its way into American households on VOD) musters a savvy treatise on the history of modern music, and a serviceable message about the cultural differences that make its diverse traditions worthy of celebration on their own terms.

On March 16th, 1970, Ray Price walked into Columbia Recording Studios on Nashville’s Music Row and recorded “For the Good Times,” a song that would return him to the top of the country charts after a nearly 11-year absence. The pinnacle was a spot Price had been well-acquainted with in the Fifties, logging 39 weeks at the top with just four singles, including the 1956 classic “Crazy Arms,” which accounted for 20 of those weeks. Sza and Justin Timberlake released “The Other Side,” the first song from the upcoming “Trolls World Tour” soundtrack.
Of course, Timberlake’s Grammy-winning 2016 hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” from the first “Trolls” film, was one of the most massive hits in a career filled with them, and like that song, this one involves co-writer Max Martin — the biggest hitmaker of the past 25 years — and sounds like it could be just as big.
The eye-catching video — a throwback to Hype Williams’ 1990s fish-eye-lensed clips for Missy Elliott, Diddy, Mase and others — adds to the song’s appeal, and includes some comic elements as well: Watch for the moment when Sza wipes out on her towering heels.
The track was written specifically for the film by Justin Timberlake, Martin, Ludwig Göransson, Sarah Aarons and Solana Rowe (Sza) and produced by Timberlake and Göransson.

The Holocaust might seem like a topic that’s completely off-limits for comedy, but a new documentary strives to challenge that assumption. “The Last Laugh” examines whether it’s acceptable to use humor in connection with a tragedy of that scale, and the implications for other taboo topics in a society that prizes free speech. Shot on 16mm, it weaves together a portrait of Auschwitz survivor Renee Firestone alongside interviews with comedians like Mel Brooks, Sarah Silverman and Gilbert Gottfried. It also features archival material ranging from “Curb Your Enthusiasm” to Jerry Lewis’ never-released film Holocaust comedy “The Day the Clown Cried,” as well as rare footage of cabarets inside the concentration camps themselves. Watch an exclusive trailer from the film below and check out the poster as well.

Amber Heard filed for divorce from Johnny Depp earlier this year, stating in a court filing that the actor had been verbally and physically abusive to her throughout the entirety of their relationship. Now she has recorded a PSA for the GirlGaze Project about domestic violence and the importance of extricating oneself from such a relationship. Heard — who never mentions Depp by name in the emotional video — begins by explaining why so many women have trouble doing so: “When it happens in your home, behind closed doors, with someone you love, it’s not as straightforward. If a stranger did this…it would be a no-brainer.” Watch the full PSA below.

How much money could Amber Heard get in her divorce from Johnny Depp? Heard filed a divorce petition on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences and demanding spousal support. Depp asked a judge to refuse Heard's demand, according to documents obtained by People. The couple didn't have a prenup, according to TMZ. Legal experts say that since the marriage only lasted 15 months, Heard would have a hard time winning a hefty sum from Depp in court, but it may be worth it for the ultra-wealthy actor to pay up in order to avoid a lengthy, public divorce. Begin Again: Edwards’ Satisfying Sophomore Film Utilizes Walken

At some point, perhaps around the mid-nineties when he banged out roles in films as varied as "Pulp Fiction" and "Excess Baggage," — or maybe when he voiced his need for more cowbell in 2000, who’s to say, really — Christopher Walken entered an actorly realm of self-parody that few stars are ever able to fully escape. What set Walken apart from the pack was the sense that he was in on the joke, that he was happily playing up his cadence and his dancing purely for our benefit, and that it had zero bearing on his actual (and profound) ability to leave that stuff behind when his work required him to do so. Yet that doesn’t dilute the pure pleasure of watching Walken marry those two ideals — the hammy Walken and the serious Walken — into one irrepressibly charming character in Robert Edwards’ darling “One More Time.” Read More: Watch: Christopher Walken...

There’s a bothersome element to films about fictional musicians: the quality of the original songs, and the suspension of disbelief required – scratch that, demanded – to buy them as listenable. In the 2010 comedy Get Him to the Greek, it’s impossible to believe that Jonah Hill’s record company rep, a guy whose tastes run from iconic punk to Mars Volta, would ever jam to the hokey, generic drivel produced by Russell Brand’s fading rocker. Then there’s the notorious “Sugar High” finale in Empire Records, the Led Zeppelin knock-offs by the Almost Famous band Stillwater, and Ethan Hawke’s awful grunge snarling in Reality Bites. (Is it me, or was this sin disproportionately committed in the 1990s?)

Title: One More Time Director: Robert Edwards Starring: Christopher Walken, Amber Heard, Kelli Garner, Hamish Linklater, Oliver Platt, Ann Magnuson. ‘One More Time’ gathers a terrific cast to stage the story of a musician’s incongruence betwixt his romantic repertoire and his tumultuous private affairs. Could a duet with husband Johnny Depp's band The Hollywood Vampires be in Amber Heard's future? In an exclusive clip from her upcoming film One More Time, Heard, sporting minimal makeup and a head of long, light pink hair, croons a bittersweet song about her "poor ludicrous heart" while strumming along on a guitar. And if Heard's soulful performance doesn't convince you of her musical prowess, just take it from her husband. "We connect on a lot of levels, but the first thing that really got me was she's an aficionado of the blues," Depp recently said of his wife of one year.

Sorry, but Christopher Walken isn’t leading a Daft Punk biopic. Rather, One More Time (previously titled When I Live My Life Over Again) is indeed music-related, but instead of Walken donning any sort of robot helmet, the film follows his character as an aging crooner who is attempting to launch a comeback in the industry, recently reunited with his daughter, played by Amber Heard. Directed by Robert Edwards, we now have the first trailer and poster ahead of a release next month.
In their review out of Tribeca last year, THR noted, “Walken is the main attraction here; though the film identifies more with the wayward daughter, played by Amber Heard, it doesn’t make her nearly as interesting as his name-dropping, spotlight-hogging entertainer. The actor’s fans, who get too few chances to see him in this kind of role, should ensure that the likeable but underwhelming pic...

Directed by Robert Edwards, the indie drama follows Walken’s aging musician character as he navigates a rocky […]

About a month or so ago, The Big Short first started making the pre release rounds, building up buzz and goodwill. Then, critics were able to begin chiming in, speaking about how fond they were of Adam McKay’s film. Now, in the past few days, the precursors have supported the movie as well, in particular the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. In the case of the latter, the flick now has guild support. All this is to say that The Big Short is not going away and has impressed me as a late contender really managing to make its mark on the award season so far. With it opening in limited release today, now’s a perfect time to take another look at it. One more time, a quick primer on what this is about. The film is an adaptation of the best selling Michael Lewis nonfiction book of the same name.

1. The AssassinThough it doesn’t always follow, the most beautiful film of the year should have the most beautiful poster, and Erik Buckham does Hou Hsiao-hsien right with this gorgeous piece. What looks at first like a combination of photography and illustration is in fact entirely taken from images from the film. Buckham told me “I didn’t want to use any imagery in the poster that did not come from the film itself, so everything you see is taken from screen grabs and some on-set photography.” What I always thought were stylized clouds surrounding Shu Qi are actually elements from an embossed picture of a rooster on a lacquered vase or some similar object. As Buckham confided, “I liked the look of the lines so I cropped in super close and played around with lighting and layer effects to blend it in with the background imagery. It was...
