Great Fun
Nick_Dets5 March 2008
Mark Roper was one of Nu Image's golden boy directors in the late 90's. Hot off the high-octane spy romp "Human Timebomb," he was more than an appropriate pick for the second "Delta Force" sequel. His craft is in fine form with "Clear Target", displaying a tighter focus on pace and plot - as thin as it may be. His skill has always been at deploying limited resources to follow the trends of Hollywood action directors. Here, his influences are clearly Michael Bay and John Woo, and he delivers a product worthy of his ambitions.

A harbor shootout kicks the film off nicely, with all the heavy artillery and explosions one watches this kind of film for. Roper shows improvement with keeping things cohesive and accessible, more notably in the next big sequence, which involves a locomotive ambush. Crane shots, dollies, and quick pans are utilized very efficiently and the many dimensions of the layered action are captured with seasoned confidence. The stuntwork is top-notch, with the actors scaling locomotive cars with apparently no safety harnesses, giving the scene raw and perilous danger.

Roper's B-movie tendencies are not completely shed in this stage of his filmography, however. Some drab sets, costumes and props drag down too many scenes and he seems to have trouble coaching the actors. Some do a fine job, most notably Gavin Hood (six or so years before winning an Oscar for directing "Tsotsi"), but plenty of the scenes are cardboard and far off hitting their mark.

This is an enjoyable film if you watch it in the context of an independent actioner. Sure there's abundant stock footage and direct-to -video cheese, but there's also an impressive use of resources and genuinely good film-making. It plays like a comic book, with a simple story tying together sequences of great action. Army/navy buffs will surely get a kick out of it, as will die-hard action fans.

Just awful
LittleStorpingInTheSwuff31 December 2018
This is an awful movie with so many flaws there isn't enough time to list them all. I wouldn't even call it a 'B' movie, it's more like a grade school production of a 'D' movie. Yeah, sure, the good guys save New York City in the end, but what else would you expect. The acting is mediocre at best, the action isn't much better, and the plot is a joke. What is even more stupefying is all of the 10's given by other reviewers! Honestly? A 10? All those 10's give this movie an overall rating of 6.2. In comparison, "Gone With The Wind", arguably one of the greatest movies ever, is only rated 8.2 by reviewers! I think reviewers who gave this movie 10 stars should seriously rethink their definition of a great movie.

Cheap, cheesy, boring action movie, worse than the usual action movies!
~PL~24 April 2000
I could not believe that they made five Operation Delta Force movies in two years. I don't know how much money they had to make this one, but it is pretty cheap. There are things that blow up, gun shots...but no plot. They had no money for the final sequence where a submarine was crashing near The Liberty Statue(is that the way to say it in english) in New York, so they took the background and added an explosion in front of it...the result is so crappy that I compared it to the helicopter crash in the awful DNA and said the difference wasn't big. Some terrorits get six or seven bullets, and there's no blood. Without forgetting the awful acting. The action sequences have no goal and are there to fill the blanks in the scenario...what scenario, again??!! It is just bad as the other Operation Delta Force films. Unexplainable terrorist presence, gun shots, no blood, some explosions, no budget, no scenario, no acting (the grass and the guns did a better job than the actors) make this film. I don't know who's the director, but I'm sure he's not gonna have a long and nice career. Maybe he should think about putting some ''known'' action films actors that are in trouble now, like Steven Seagal (who played in The Patriot), Jean-Claude Van Damme (who played in Desert Heat), or Jeff Wincott, who was supposedly a martial arts superstar, and who played in Future Fear...oops, I think he played in the first Operation Delta Force, or is it Jeff Fahey, anyway, they are both bad actors, so I don't care, and no one should. I ask you not to waste your money on renting this one OR WORSE, BUYING IT! Even action fans won't like it. Except if you like the Nikita TV series...it is approximately the same thing. A cheap and boring thing (I'm not talking about the Nikita movie by Luc Besson!!!!) I give it 30%.

How does one define things?
redkiwi27 January 2002
I've always wondered about "made for TV" films. Were they actually deliberately made for TV, or were they intended to be cinema releases before a film exec realised how bad they were?

Either way, this comes across as an example of the latter. I don't know if this did get a cinema release, but if it did it was wholly undeserved!

Mindless violence, lame attempts at comedy that make Arnold Schwarzenegger look like a comedic genius, and just rubbish acting throughout make you want to leave half way through this film.

Which is why I've just switched channels to watch the news instead.

If this film was a horse - they'd shoot it!
rharley13 August 2004
Warning: Spoilers
There simply isn't anything to redeem this (attempt at a) film. This has to be the weakest delivery of an unoriginal plot to ever hit the screen - it's not even good enough to be 'filler'.

The acting was wooden, the script predictable and unimaginative, the sets were totally unrealistic (crystal clear sea water though which to view the patently model sub?), and the continuity was dreadful! How about enemy soldiers who don't even know the basics of how to take cover? Or our band of heroes who dodge bullets while running along the top of a train in full view of machine-gun toting baddies? Maybe the plastic molded cave walls? And could we have guessed the count-down timer would have been stopped on anything other than 1 second?

Actually the only thing this film is good for is to educate other film crews and actors how NOT to do it!

A cutting critique...
the_greenflash3 December 2000
Warning: Spoilers
Delta Force ?! Delta Farce more like.

Apart from the inadequate research (US troops decked out with African rifles for a start..) and overestimates of computers in general. This was, in a word, pedestrian. The same warmed over plots and cardboard sets (WOW these atomic subs are spacious!) combined with the crack team of henchmen that aren't that crack at anything, can produce but one thing - this.

An Enjoyable Guilty Pleasure Action Thriller!!!
zardoz-1327 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Operation Delta Force 3: Clear Target" qualifies as a sincere, above-average, but threadbare-budgeted, testosterone-laden actioneer about an elite U.S. Military Unit that incurs the wrath of a major Colombian-based cocaine kingpin after they demolish one point eight billion dollars worth of his powdery product. South African director Mark Roper, who helmed "Live Wire 2: Human Timebomb" and went on to helm the fourth entry in the "Operation Delta Force" franchise, displays an obvious knack for orchestrating exciting action sequences involving guys blazing away with assault rifles at other guys; colorful explosions blossoming like high octane orchids, and loads of other late 1990's, state-of-the-art technology. Unfortunately, the main drawback is the bare-bones budget that Roper contends with to perform miracles, but even the miniatures look decent. Of course, the U.S.S. Roosevelt submarine that figures prominently in the Tom Clancy style plot is clearly a miniature lensed in a tank, but it appears passable in appropriately murky underwater scenes. The opening fire-fight in Colombia on the Magdalena River, North of El Banco, looks cool as our heroes cruise in after dark. The setting looks suitably eerie with heavy cloud banks, and Roper keeps our heroes jumping through hoops as they blast away at their antagonists. Moments before this initial shoot'em up scene, Admiral Henshaw, the officer in charge of the team, learns to his chagrin that the DEA dispatched two missions with twelve-man teams against the Colombians that failed miserably to achieve their objective. Cinematographer Johan Scheepers does a good job of composing images of the bridge as explosions erupt during the night. For the record, the body count piles up double-digits as our guys blast their way into an underground facility when the narcotics are stashed. One of the guys in the unit refers to it as "a coke head's wet dream."

Basically, "Operation Delta Force 3: Clear Target" looks like a warm-up act for "The Expendables" with our amazingly resilient team of Americans performing the virtually impossible as they wage a war against a vast criminal organization that has the foresight to take on America's sophisticated computer technology with a wise-acre hacker. Our unit of clean-cut, clean-squawking commando types abhor the senseless war on drugs that they are ordered to fight until one of their own guys, Lombardi (David Dukas), perishes in a firefight at the outset because he trips a booby-trap and freezes up. These square-jawed, one-dimensional dudes declare their own war on the chief villain, Umberto Salvatore (Danny Keogh of "Invictus"), who in turn seeks to punish America for Uncle Sam's interference in his unsavory business affairs. They pay a hacker to help them capture a silent attack submarine. Once they acquire the U.S.S. Roosevelt, the bad guys load up the missile silos with lethal mustard gas and threaten to launch deadly Tomahawk rockets on a major U.S. metropolis. The destination turns out to be New York City on the day that the United Nations celebrates their war of drugs. This part of "Operation Delta Force" scenarist David Sparling's screenplay, based on a story by Danny Lerner, who produced the "Expendables" epics, reminded me of the Sean Connery movie "The Rock." Derivative as it is, "Operation Delta Force 3: Clear Target" is designed primarily for action-movie junkies who thrive on action galore with only a veneer of authenticity. Although the commando unit consists of cardboard characters, the actors compensate somewhat with charismatic performances, and they are later joined by a dame who is an expert in all things cyberspace. The criminal organization that our heroes are pitted against are reminiscent of James Bond's adversary SPECTRE. Talk about small beginnings, one of the unit soldiers named Sparks is played by future "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" director Gavin Hood. Suffice to say, Roper knows how to stage a firefight and he manages to keep all the disparate plot elements clearly delineated, so I thought "Operation Delta Force 3: Clear Target" was an enjoyable guilty pleasure.

The Great Motivators, Family & Patriotism
montyw19 March 2005
Okay! I decided to lease this movie (the first time I've viewed 2 movies in a year) and I was pleasantly surprised. Usually, movies fall off for me and I lose valid interest. 'Operation Delta Force Clear Target', was as interesting the moment it started, as it was at the end. I see that the movie was made in 1997, but it could pass for today because of the terrorist state we live in. I met a couple Delta Force soldiers when I served our Great Country (God save the Queen) and they were interesting chaps. Talk about focusing on the task at hand...these Gents were aggressive as the year is long. This lead actor (James Fitzpatrick) which was also in the movie I just viewed (US Seals) is uniquely focused. The Lad HAD to be a soldier at one time. Or else most American actors are just plain intense. I give this movie also a ten.

Excellent Retribution Action Film!
ssnider-216 February 2005
In a Delta III's storyline, Skip Lang (Jim Fitzpatrick) is embroiled in a personal agenda to cut off the Columbian Drug Lord 'Salvatore', and get "revenge" for the murder of one of his Delta Team, on the kid's Birthday.

The plot is very good - but I think it overplayed the whole "Skip Lang is a hero", way too much.

The action sequences are very well done too, but it tries too hard to be a suspenseful action-adventure movie by incorporating ideas and themes from several other films and putting them into one box. I thought this was a very good film about the world-wide war on drugs, but, it could have stood to incorporate one strong subplot, not three. Besides that, the acting, the action, and the music were all good.

Superb acting, action and story.
dwalden-224 February 2005
The war against drugs will never go away. It exists and seems to repeat itself with every new generation of greedy drug makers and sellers.

This film takes the war against drugs to a whole new level. It is human nature to want to protect your family and friends against it, but when you are doing your job to protect...and you lose one of your buddies that is fighting along side of you, it pisses you-off. The experience is not primarily about shooting and blowing things up -- as described from the experience of other soldiers I know, it's largely about what happens between the battles...the growth of wisdom...and comradeship...fear, and the freedom that has to be fought for. It's important to realize that with terrorists training in other lands, we must go there and fight them there, otherwise they WILL come here again.

Delta III, is the perfect depiction of taking the fight to them. James Fitzpatrick is a terrific action film star, I don't understand why he's not bigger.

Delta, Delta, Delta...
cerebralchap19 April 2004
Because I spend most of my time in science lab I look forward to watching films that are filled with action, romance and energy. I don't really care about the production value or the inaccurate flow of story. I have read thousands of novels and I don't care to try to find problems with films like some of these critics. Which is why, I absolutely loved this movie! I found the lead actor to be heroic in nature, believable, and more than anything else, unknown. It sometimes throws me to watch a film with someone that is well known because that more then anything takes me out of the story.

I love seeing a film where I don't know anything about the lead actors, and I have to wonder what they are really like. It's much more compelling to view. Kudos to the film makers. Great job.

I LOVE action movies. This one's GREAT!
rickifox28 March 2005
I've lived in the Ontario Province of Canada all of my natural days. I'm not sure whether it's because we have so much snow and rain up here, or just because I enjoy them, but I have seen almost every action film that's available. I'm not a tomboy, I just enjoy action. The first time I saw Jim Fitzpatrick, I knew he had thing for action films too. I'm sure that he enjoys making them as much as we do watching them. It's like being a kid again and going out in the back yard and playing army, or in my case, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I'm also into martial arts, so I know that mister Fitzpatrick is no Chuck Norris. But, mister Fitzpatrick is a better actor than Chuck Norris is. Please continue to entertain us freezing Canucks up here in the Northern part of the continent. Thanks to you all.

A Wonderful Actor in a B Movie.
setdresser-127 March 2005
I'd watch Jimmy Fitzpatrick sleep. I've been an All My Children fan since I was in grade school. When he came onto the show, I was smitten. Great looking, great actor. Two qualities that are hard to beat. I was heart broken when he left the show, but then I got to work with him. He's every bit the gentleman that is, the actor. I met his wife and children, which he's totally proud of. He whips his wallet out and shows you the pictures of his family at the drop of a hat. Delta Force is an old franchise, but Jimmy has brought some new life into it. It's a shame they didn't put more money into the production, because Jimmy deserves more. He's the only reason I rented the movie. Good job Jimmy.

Super-duper! I appreciate this film!
editman-43 April 2005
Every once in a blue moon, you get to watch a movie and say to yourself, "Man, I wish that was me in that movie." This was kind of movie. The main actor was great. It looks like he had a lot of fun playing the part of the hero. And ANYONE that has a moral bone in their body has to love the aspect of fighting against terrorists. terrorists all need to be destroyed. Even if it's just in the movies. It's a start. Get moral people to think about and except the concept of getting rid of terrorists like rats that want to kill all of us innocent people. When ever I see a movie that makes a statement of defending the world's peace-lovers, I'm all for it.

Fab Acting and Action from Star
henryhaden20 April 2005
I absolutely agree with soldier's take on this flick. I happen to think that the lead actor was utterly fantastic. Not to mention the supporting cast. I noticed whilst I was browsing the IMDb, that Mr. Collins has worked several times with Mr. Fitzpatrick. It's good to see that these gentlemen have continued a working relationship in action flics. I have yet to see American Reunion, but I am assuming it is not an action flick. I am hoping to see more films with Mr. Fitzpatrick, he has my vote for action actor of the year. I used to be a big fan of Arnold Schwartzeneger's, and realized after reading up James' bio that his wife worked with Arnold. It is truly such a small world.

Top of the Action Flics, if you like action!
motionpicturepr22 February 2005
This was an excellent action movie, and Jim Fitzpatrick does a great performance. I don't care what you think you might know about Terrorism or Columbians, or Production value, or, whatever. Team Delta is on a roll and they're not gonna stop until the bill is paid in-full.

I love the fact that they don't pretend to be anything more than pure fantasy and entertainment. This guy Fitzpatrick doesn't take himself to serious and it's evident that these actors really had fun making this film. ROCK-ON!

It would be different if a Studio spent millions of dollars on a big star, which would take me out of it. I rep lots of big stars, but Fitzpatrick is so much more interesting. His range is bigger, broader.

Jimmy Fitzpatrick is a consummate Pro
execvpres12 January 2006
I've known Jimmy for over a decade. He joined us, our Production in South Africa while we shooting the TV Series Sweating Bullets. Not only did he begin working just hours after arriving (following a 30-plus hour trip), but Jimmy livened us up and brought a new fervor into the shoot. The shows regulars fell in love with him, as did the entire crew. He knew his dialogue, he took direction extremely well, and he didn't bat an eye, when it came to doing his own stunts. I know he played American Pro Football, but he's not that big a guy. Jimmy was thrown from the horse several times, and got right back on without complaining, and he did not complain about the freezing conditions at night. And let me tell you, it was FREEZING. Jimmy is very nice young man, and that's why we hired him again and again, until Jeff Sagansky killed the show.

bhack-26 June 2005
I was so excited to see some good but kickin in this movie man! I can't believe that most people make movies with special effects and you can tell in this one that the actors are doing their own thing man. I totally dug it. My question is, why does Hollywood waste so much money on big stars and big costs to make the movie and then these guys make such a good movie with very little money? I hate going to a movie and seeing someone in something that you remember from another movie. Like Bruce Willis. I can't stand his movies. He plays the same type of character in every movie. The actors in this movie were the perfect guys for this. They look and act like special forces guys and they fight like the real deal. Awesome dudes!

Actioner movie with great loads of gun-play and explosion
ma-cortes30 November 2005
The picture talks about the valiant and brave Delta Force commando constituted by Jim Fitzpatrick,Greg Collins,Bryan Genesse, among others . They are assigned to track down a nasty villain, a Colombian dope-lord that for vengeance hijacks a nuke underwater with ominous purports. The group must battle till vanquish in this overly actioner movie.

This interesting movie is tense and exciting ,at time entertaining and with quite budget. Standard action-packed picture ,plenty of explosion,derring-do and fast moving . The film has frenetic action, shoot'em up and spectacular set pieces and for that reason is amusing. The motion picture is produced by Nu Image production that nowadays is called Milleniun and in charge of Danny Lerner,Avi Lerner and Trevor Short, besides producers previous Delta Force films as ¨Delta Force operation Ebola¨ with Ernie Hudson,Jeff Fahey and directed by Sam Firstemberg, plus ¨Operation Delta Force 2 Mayday¨ with Michael McGrady and directed by Yossi Wein. The atmospheric scores of the three Delta force are composed by Serge Colbert and usually repeat technicians and secondary actors in this kind films. The movie is professionally directed by Mark Roper. The flick will appeal to commandos sub-genre fans. Rating : acceptable and bemusing.

It's just okay... but it gets an "A" for effort
Wizard-825 September 2010
Watching "Operation Delta Force 3", it soon became clear that the filmmakers were trying extremely hard to deliver the goods on a small budget. The movie keeps jumping from one different location to another, and while the various locations (underground tunnel, nuclear submarine, Pentagon Headquarters, etc.) do look a little impoverished, you can tell the filmmakers really squeezed every last penny of their small budget. The action sequences jump from place to place as well, and you get more elaborate action sequences than you usually get from a low budget actioner.

But there are some significant problems with the movie. None of the characters are fleshed out or really stand out from each other. There is poor continuity at times. There are some glaring plot holes, like why don't the good guys simply blow up the hijacked submarine. And while the action scenes are elaborate, often they are executed in a sluggish manner.

Still, the movie is never boring, and it has that other stuff I described in the first paragraph. I recommend that you watch the movie while you are doing something else at home - sewing, chopping vegetables, doing your taxes etc. It's a movie that's best not examined very closely, which would reveal more of its weaknesses if you watched it in a straightforward way.

Operation Confusion.
Grendel211020 June 2001
Warning: Spoilers
After watching this so-called "movie," I was left breathless, being only able to say"...wha?" This movie makes no sense at all. I barely paid attention until the last twenty minutes and I found a zillion errors. Since when is it that when a piece of metal brushes against the shell of a sub that the inside is damaged, and water gets in the ship, regardless of the "no-hole" factor. Also, when a submarine is blown to bits (after hitting a wall softly), how is it that some old guy survives. Not only that, but he was unharmed!!! Some people tended disappear, strangely and suddenly, and the lead female role, named Ariana, had hair that seemed to grow with every scene. And what's with the names of these people? Hawk? Do you know anyone named Hawk, or who would want to be named Hawk? I know it's a code-name, but it's a pretty non-frightening one. And if these people are Navy Seals, why is it that they can't just swim out of the ship as it's about to BLOW UP. Seems to me that the whole mini-sup is a waste of time for such highly trained people. And tell me, where did all those other guys come from, you know, the ones who try to kill everyone, but instead get killed themselves? Shouldn't the crew know if somebody was on their boat? This is one of the most terrible, ignorant movies EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
