There were many questions when Shannen Doherty was written out of Charmed following its third season in 2001.
Now, over 22 years later, details are beginning to trickle out about what happened behind the scenes of the supernatural WB drama.
In the latest episode of Doherty's Let's Be Clear podcast, Holly Marie Combs revealed their costar Alyssa Milano got Doherty fired.
Why Was Shannen Doherty Fired From Charmed?
"He said, 'We didn't mean to -- but we've been backed into this corner -- we're basically in this position where it's one or the other,'" she dished.
"'We were told [by Alyssa] it's her or [Shannen] and Alyssa has threatened to sue us for a hostile workplace environment.'"
Combs was taken aback by the drama because she didn't feel anything that happened with the ladies could be characterized as a "hostile workplace environment."

Heather Graham is becoming unhinged playing a slew of characters, including an undead demon, in H.P. Lovecraft adaptation “Suitable Flesh.”
Graham stars as psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby who becomes obsessed with a seductive younger patient (Judah Lewis) suffering extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger to being in his presence.
Bruce Davison, Johnathon Schaech, and Barbara Crampton also star in the film directed by Joe Lynch, with Crampton producing. Dennis Paoli penned the script, based on Lovecraft’s 1933 short story “The Thing on the Doorstep.”
“Re-Animator” scribe Paoli first developed the original script for “Suitable Flesh,” then titled “Envy,” with late filmmaker Stuart Gordon, who died in 2020. After later signing on, director Lynch swapped the gender of the lead psychiatrist character, now played by Graham.
“Joe Lynch is such a cinephile,” Graham told IndieWire in an interview conducted during the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

It took some time for the hosts of “The View” to tackle Tucker Carlson’s promotion of testicle tanning, but on Wednesday, they finally got around to it. And thanks to a joke from Ana Navarro, the segment ended in raucous laughter.
As the first segment landed on the Democrats’ agenda, Sunny Hostin argued the party needs to be talking about the things they want to do more — for example, canceling student loan debt — rather than letting conversation be dominated by GOP antics.
The women called out Carlson’s recent special in particular, in which he promoted testicle tanning as a means of combating a purported decrease in testosterone, and mocked the fact that it got so much attention. Of course, Navarro had a quip for the situation.
“Now we know why Tucker doesn’t like Latinos and African Americans,” she said, prompting Hostin to joke that it was a “little envy.

"Fullmetal Alchemist" is one of my favorite anime series ever. The series of two brothers searching for the Philosopher's Stone balances insane fight scenes with intensely emotional moments, thanks to the deft work of author Hiromu Arakawa. Who can forget the horror of learning what Shou Tucker did to his daughter? Or Roy Mustang raining down an unceasing firestorm on Envy? It also doesn't hurt that the Elric brothers have perhaps one of the most compelling journeys when it comes to shonen protagonists, literally bending the laws of the universe to help each other.

Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.

What a strange career Barry Levinson has had. The Baltimore-born filmmaker burst onto the scene in 1982 with “Diner” and embarked on a winning streak that’s still somewhat astonishing — his hits from the period included “Tin Men,” “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Rain Man,” and “Bugsy.” And then came 1992’s “Toys,” and after it, a steady cascade of real clunkers: “Jimmy Hollywood,” “Disclosure,” “Sphere,” “Envy,” “Man of the Year,” “Rock the Kasbah,” and so on.

Shazam! is a lighthearted superhero movie from a director not really known for telling lighthearted stories. Director David F. Sandberg is known for his work in the only successful (modern) horror movie shared cinematic universe, with the Conjuring-adjacent Annabelle: Creation, not to mention the tense and violent Lights Out. But Shazam! has humor and heart to spare, a brightly colored romp through the magical corners of the Dceu.
But you don’t have to look far to see how Sandberg’s horror influences are felt in the movie. A key point of the film is the release of the magical avatars of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Envy, Lust, Sloth, Gluttony, Greed, and Wrath, who are controlled by the villainous Dr. Sivana. They've been represented in the comics before, with their statue forms appearing in the very first Shazam story in 1939, and appearing as their scary, demon-y...

To this very day, I am able to recall the first time I laid my eyes upon “Onibaba”. It was a rainy Sunday afternoon, one of those Sundays where the comfort of your own home seemed too majestic to leave and all you want to do is laze around. I was in my bedroom, the air conditioner was on, and my back was rested against my bed. To complete the comfort, a snack was there for me to enjoy. It was heavenly.
In contrast, what took place on screen seemed to come out of the depths of horrific madness. We saw raging Susuki grasses all over the screen as the credits and the folk-like score, combination of jazz and taiko drums, played out. The camera showed a dark pit hidden amongst the grasses and then took us to its inside before climbing out,...

After David F. Sandberg became WB’s golden child post-Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation successes, superhero property Shazam! seemed an “inspired” choice for a follow-up project. “Why give a scream machine the reins to DC’s lovable manchild in tights?” Simple: Sandberg displays a surgeon’s precision by balancing snarly demonic darkness with playground superpower maturation. Don’t fret: Shazam! proves that the Dceu has a sense of humor, can execute on it and *deliver* an electric punch of uber-fun comic book action, too. Heart, humor and heroics – can I get a hell yeah?

The first one will focus on African American Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, whose inspirational music and faith were a great support for Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement. Roberts will executive produce the movie alongside Linda Berman of Lincoln Square Productions, with a script written by Bettina Gilois.

Behold Bill Murray as the white savior barreling into a foreign land and teaching the ignorant natives how to be better people. Obnoxious and tone deaf. I’m “biast” (pro): love Bill Murray
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Bill Murray is Richie Lanz, a sleazy Los Angeles music manager. He’s the kind of guy who takes money from a wannabe singer with no talent and no chance of even the most measly sort of success but who is also naive enough to believe that it’s normal to pay him upfront. And he’s clearly been stringing along his assistant, Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel: Your Highness, Yes Man), who has been working for him in the expectation that she will get a boost to her own singing career. So when he takes her to Kabul — yes, in Afghanistan — to perform for U.

Ben Stiller's professional onscreen career is officially turning 30 this year — that's roughly 412 in comedian years. In a business where funny people tend to quickly exhaust their limited charm and sink from telling jokes to becoming a punchline, the restless and versatile Stiller has managed to sustain one of the most consistent comic careers this side of Bob Hope. From his days as a bit player to his later emergence as a force of nature in front of the camera and behind the scenes (you have his production company Red...

Looking at the trailers for The Bay made me wonder if Barry Levinson was slumming as a filmmaker. It’s been a while since he has made a feature film that really worked, and some of his recent movies like Envy and Man of the Year were duds. Sure, he did make You Don’t Know Jack which featured Al Pacino in one of his best (and non-bombastic) performances but that was relegated to HBO and not the big screen.
Here, Levinson looks to bring us another found footage movie which is a genre that just won’t die. As I sat down in the theatre I couldn’t help but to wonder if the director of Rain Man had run out of ideas and was just looking for any job to take on.
Well, it looks like I owe Mr. Levinson an apology because The Bay is not only...

Chicago – Critically reviled “The Watch” with Ben Stiller & Vince Vaughn opened with downright depressing numbers, good enough for only third place. Meanwhile, “Step Up: Revolution” claimed fourth while “The Dark Knight Rises” tumbled over 60% in its second frame.
For comparison, “The Dark Knight” fell 52.5% from its massive opening weekend four years ago. Estimates pin “The Dark Knight Rises” at over 60%. Exactly what is keeping people away is unclear (some point to Aurora, some point to the Olympics, and some point to the fact that most viewers don’t consider this film to have the repeat value of its predecessor), but it is clear now that “Tdkr” will not top the previous film in overall gross. Still, the film has made over half a billion worldwide already.
As for “The Watch,” horrendous reviews, bad marketing, and maybe even controversy surrounding its subject matter killed this comedy before it even hit theaters.

Already, at age 15, actress Ariel Gade has managed to make quite a name for herself inside and out of the genre world, and Dread Central had the opportunity to chat briefly with her about her most recent project: Some Guy Who Kills People
Ever since making her debut on television at the young age of 6, Gade has gone on to co-star in films like Envy, Dark Water and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem and portrayed youngster Rose Varon in the cult classic ABC TV series "Invasion." In Jack Perez's dark comedy Some Guy Who Kills People she appears as precocious tweener Amy Wheeler, who not only discovers she has a dad (Kevin Corrigan) but also figures out that he very well could be the killer behind a string of grisly murders in their small town.

Fans of "School of Rock" are probably unaware that Jack Black has re-teamed with the hit family film's director Richard Linklater for another bizarre character comedy. However, this time around, their collaboration is a very different affair: the indie dark comedy "Bernie." The grimly funny tale is based on the true story of Bernie Tiede, a beloved community figure in the small town of Carthage, Texas, who in 1996, confessed to murdering the wealthy and elderly Marjorie Nugent. Bernie's close friendship with the widowed Nugent was a well-documented dysfunctional relationship, and when the crime occurred, it irrevocably changed the tiny Texas community. To bring the story of Bernie to life, Jack Black delivers one of the better performances of his career, making Tiede a unique and sympathetic character, full of bombastic Southern personality. Moviefone sat down with Black to talk about his experiences working on the movie and interacting with the real Bernie Tiede.

There are no two comedic stars who are as serious about comedy as Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy, and no two actors who have starred in such a bounty of diverse blockbusters. Murphy, his mouth spouting jokes at breakneck speed, is a natural foil for Stiller, who's at his best when shown struggling to comprehend the intentions of a stronger willed costar.
Lucky for us, the yin-and-yang pair (no, not because one's white and one's black -- we mean in temperament!) is about to collide in "Tower Heist." And, as a pre-game show, we're throwing this vertically challenged duo in the ring to battle it out. So let's get ready to rumble ... and/or read quietly to ourselves!
Full Name
Eddie Murphy: Edward Regan Murphy
Ben Stiller: Benjamin Edward Stiller
Advantage: Stiller. By co-opting Eddie's name as his own middle name, Stiller dominates Murphy in truly humiliating fashion.

If you've been following me for any length of time, you probably know that I'm not a fan of lists. The best of the year lists are something of a mandatory enterprise at this point, and I have several other efforts at best of something lists (mostly as a result of dares), but I don't like them. They don't make a lot of sense, especially where numbering is concerned, and they don't actually deliver any great value. Of course, they do deliver in the one sense that they are a good way to get a feel for a critic's tastes, but beyond that, they are a kind of industry in-group nonsense.
Worst lists, are even worse. They also have more baggage built into them. For one thing, to be included in the list, you have to admit you've watched the thing. Thus, there are clearly worse movies than any on this list,...

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Barry Levinson (You Don’t Know Jack, Envy) will be directing a documentary centered on the devastating 1995 Oklahoma City bombing called O.K.C. The film is being scripted by Safran Co. Clay Wold, who’s brother was a “a young legal clerk on the defense team of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh”. The film is being fast-tracked into production, and Wold is expected to submit another draft next week.

Did you have a good holiday weekend? If you're Jack Black, probably not so much. In 'Gulliver's Travels' he plays Lemuel Gulliver, a magazine mailroom worker who improbably gets shipwrecked on Liliput, an island of tiny, tiny people, and becomes an ego-inflated "hero" before trouble arises. The film opened on Saturday; our critic William Goss says it is "depressingly dependable on disappointing good taste and moderate expectations at every turn." Adding injury to insult, 'Gulliver's Travels' fared poorly at the box office.
As our own Jeffrey M. Co-starring Tom Sturridge, Blythe Danner and Richard Jenkins, the story focuses on Emma (Bilson) and Will (Sturridge), two childhood best friends who lost touch many years ago, who are, in Will’s eyes at least, meant to be together. Sound like the perfect start to a romantic comedy?
Directed by James Keach (Blind Dating) and written by Steve Adams (Envy), Freestyle Releasing will open the movie in February 2011.

This is one of those common sense posts where it's often nevertheless enlightening to see actual numbers to back up obvious theories. Of the five actors currently best known for making broad comedies right now, there are still movies that each of them have made that most of us adore: Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love, Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction, Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Carell in Little Miss Sunshine and Stiller in The Royal Tenenbaums. We know they're capable of making good films and, indeed, the list of smaller, more dramatic roles on each of these gentlemen's resumes is (mostly) impressive.
So why do they continue to make broad stupid comedies that make many of us hate them all the more? For the same reason many of us would. The money, of course. But what's the real-dollar difference between making a 90-minute fart joke and baring your soul?...

I've always rather admired Barry Levinson as a director, even during my dislike of certain films. Whether you had iconic classics (Diner, The Natural, or Rain Man), or disasters (Toys, Envy), or something in the middle, his movies have always been teetering on the edge. They are generally in the "just crazy enough to work" category, but sometimes they don't. Whether ultimately hits or misses, you have to wonder going in. Rain Man could have gone wrong, and let's just say that I think many of the films in the lesser category could have gone right. The daring behind such works is still in play with You Don't Know Jack, a look at Jack Kevorkian's life. Few ideas come to mind more readily when pondering the efforts that could more easily go wrong. From preachy nonsense, to just plain boring, there are countless ways this film could have gone wrong.

Careers in Hollywood are not unlike ocean tides. If you're in the business long enough it's inevitable that the ebb and flow of the system is going to result in measurable highs and lows. And if, for whatever reason, the heavens remain unaligned for back-to-back low-tide films, people begin to assume a pattern is at play. So it's understandable that You Don't Know Jack is an easy film to be wary of. It's a made for TV movie (HBO, despite their one-time motto of "It's not TV.", is indeed still TV) directed by Barry Levinson, a director whose once-wonderful career has been marred of late by a few true stinkers. And it stars Al Pacino, a man whose performances of late have seemingly become impersonations of Al Pacino impersonations, as America's most controversial proponent of assisted suicide, Dr. Jack Kevorkian.
Yet even with all those potential portents of an incoming low tide,...

He's made some masterly films, but not for a while. What is it about Stiller that makes me keep hoping, despite the disappointments?
I have never found myself conflicted about Renée Zellweger. On the subject of Hugh Jackman, I am wholly unambiguous. And yet there are other Hollywood stars who for all their lacklustre output and unappealing public images I don't have it in me (yet) to conclusively write off, some stubborn, stupid part of my psyche convinced that my faith will one day be rewarded by something resembling a good movie. Friends, I give you Ben Stiller.
Others will have their equivalents, but for me no-one but Stiller provokes quite the same response of, on the one hand, a default setting somewhere between indifference and outright dislike and, on the other, a faint but persistent awareness of their talent. The downside of the equation is easy to outline. For...

Below is the trailer for the new Dr. Jack Kevorkian biopic set to air on HBO. Al Pacino stars as the white-haired "doctor o' death" who stirred a national uproar when he created the Mercitron -- a device that helped patients commit assisted suicide. I kept waiting for Billy Mays to start hawking it on late night, but alas, it would never come to be.
Barry Levinson directed the pic, and it's got kind of a killer supporting cast: Susan Sarandon, Brenda Vaccaro, Danny Huston, John Goodman, and James "Dr. Venture" Urbaniak. The trailer itself has a serious Wes Anderson vibe, though it could just be the seventies-title graphics.
I can't remember the last good Pacino film. I mean, he's been in plenty of mediocre shit as of late. I'm pretty sure the last time Pacino impressed me was when he played Roy Cohn in HBO's Angels in America. And...
