70s-80s Spielberg was just goddam magical. Like a combination of the best parts of both classic Hollywood, and modern film-making. Post-2000, we still get occaissional glimpses of that magic, but less often, and in a more polished form, without that raw, infectious, unpretentious love for the classic hollywood blockbuster, from when he was younger. He's still incredible, in terms of his technical skills- probably even more so, now. But "mature" Spielberg lacks that absence of pretense, and the "making movies for the average person" factor, that made his early movies so cool. But in his prime the guy was peerless.

Jackson feels like he COULD HAVE been the next Spielberg- His early stuff was super-raw, but despite the minimal budget, he had an incredible, instinctive knack for movie-making, and in the same kind of unpretentious way as early Spielberg. But after finding his feet with the low-budget stuff, he got gobbled up by the Hollywood machine, trying to use him for all these huge projects like King Kong and the LoTR series, where it seems like just got lost, in film-making-by-commitee, and movies where market-research has more creative control than the director. Weirdly, I think the limitations of low budget, plus the freedom of lower-stakes movies, brought out the best in Jackson, while the high pressure of well-known properties like Kong and LoTR, killed his mojo.
